Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Donal Og had a bizarre little preview of Clare v Wexford on the Rte website.

    He prefers hurling to sex.

Is.there a case to be made for limiting the size of.the bas of the hurl. ...modern outfield players have hurls that look like goalies hurls from 20 years ago.. my children are 12 and have a bas like an adult hurl..
To be fair the modern intercounty hurler probably has a huge amount of.muscle and strength compared to previous men too

Very good point. There's a pub in Limerick (Myles Breens I think, or Flannerys beside it) that has one of Mick Mackey's hurleys on the wall. It's way closer to the size of a hockey stick than a modern hurley. No idea when the change occurred though, seems to have really creeped in the last 15 or so years.

The pick of the games must be in Cusack Park in Ennis.

Clare v Wexford has more subplots than an Agatha Christie novel.

This is Game of Thrones-esque, bringing together an ensemble cast full of big characters, with plenty of intrigue, no shortage of backstabbing, with hurling added instead of sex, which is even better.

    Is TJ Reid injured?

It's a weird one. A Clare mate of mine wants to make the sliotar heavier to stop Hegarty and others scoring from way out. I've argued (unsuccessfully) it's a serious skill in itself, but I can see the logic behind the suggestion tbh. Wonder how much heavier it would have to be to make a difference?

This for me is the biggest challenge hurling faces the ball has to be made heavier

It's not Flannerys i don't think. Yeah I agree, they need to be stricter on enforcement around equipment. It used be a skill to connect sweetly with the ball. Now if you don't then there's something wrong because the bas is the size of a frying pan.

A bigger bas helps control, first touch and striking. The game has gotten more ball in hand - striking on the ground features less - hence a shorter hurler with a bigger boss. Rise it quicker with one hand and less chance of a hook. I know some forwards who basically get a huge bas on a camoige stick - built to spec.

The long distance hurl has gone out of fashion as the ball changed.

    Murphy reffing. Freefest in prospect.

First 2 tipp points off thrown balls.

That Cork sponsor makes it look like they have a white band like a Derry kit from a distance

Cork will never be involved in a freefest. They play a non contact game..

Some amount of throwing the ball going on.

Good to see ref blowing for throw balls and over carrying. Last week the refs were asleep to it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,150 ✭✭✭letowski

This is such a tame affair. Not necessarily a criticism of the teams but more so the way the game is going in general. 25 minutes in and honestly not one, not even one tackle between the 40s. Plenty of nice little stick and hand passes to free men though.

Does anyone else find this absolutely boring?

No real physical contests, loads of short passing...or is it just lack of crowds?!?

In fairness they are all just training matches with the way the year has gone

I find the short passing and teams have to be smart to move it out of defense with the ball way more exciting than 2 teams hoofing it.

You would miss the noise of the fans though

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,150 ✭✭✭letowski

I think an aspect is both how good the free takers are and long they can hit it, combined with the refereeing. Players are just apprehensive of putting in a hard tackle because more often than not, its a free and a point conceded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Grats

If the pundits such as Daly had their way no foul would be blown. They moan about throw balls, over carrying and fouls related to advantage rule being blown. Looks like they want a free for all.

Could RTE not spare a brolly for Donal Og lol

    I hope your right.

As someone who has loved watching hurling since the mid 80s im beginning to find the game uncaptivating (if that's a word :) )

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,150 ✭✭✭letowski

I wish Daly would stop complaining about the technical fouls, the ref has been on the money with them

Super from Horgan. Think Fitzgibbon got away with steps, though.

Laois’ goal today was a great finish incase you haven’t seen it.

    Brain dead goalkeeping though.

The long range points are ridiculous tonight considering the heavy rain earlier. Sliother needs looking at.

All the technical offences like oveRcarrying and throwing the ball seem to be against Cork

Definitely needs to be looked at. I think ideally it should be very difficult to put the ball over the bar from the halfway line

I wouldn't argue with that but Tipp have been committing similar offences which haven't been called

That's the thing, let the refs be tough on technical fouls but they have to do it in every game. No doubt all will be forgotten come championship

Saw an article on RTE - headline - Are referees coming down on limerick?

THEY'VE ONLY HAD ONE GAME! WITH ONE REF!

Are Limerick not responsible for the number of frees they give away? Part of their game plan is fouling in areas where teams have a terrible chance of scoring? It's football stuff brought in by Kinnerk. Giving frees away and not letting the opposition play. It's puke hurling. They play percentages. Preventing goals and open play and chopping players down at all costs. See chop on Alan Flynn. Blatant foul rather than risk a player breaking through - did it throughout the All-Ireland final and all last championship. It's endemic levels of it.
It's going to kill the game. It's part of Limerick's game plan. Tipp started doing the same in the second half then- fouling limerick deep in their half. It's going to spread throughout the game now - unless refs punish teams for persistent following. The amount of frees Limerick gave away today - we have to bring in a black card or something. This cancer will spread throughout the game and stop open hurling and we'll have two teams playing a defensive football brand of hurling. It's an eyesore.

It's about time you woke up. Why am I the only one highlighted, if there was a tit for tat?

And an article on the refs and the new rules in THE NATIONAL LEAGUE is not for the league thread?

Yes. I think a Cork back had words with the ref and he took it out on them.

That's their game, plus they're trying to ramp up the physical side of their game. It's far from perfected, yet, their timing is out and so hence the free count against them in addition to the yellow cards. Whether they will ever be comfortable playing what is a somewhat alien game to them remains to be seen.

Waterford aided Cork's latest game plan last week with themselves been very flat. As things hot up, Cork will be tested and only then will we know their true worth. We saw glimpses of that pressure tonight and we saw the result in free count and yellow cards.

Not a fan of either but hope Tipp beat Cork this weekend.

The Cork hype gone into overdrive after 1 win

Bitter much? . Waterford were very poor against Cork. There's no hype in Cork. We are trying to chase an All Ireland for 16 years now. We know we haven't been good enough in years gone by. I be more worried about how easy Cork destroyed the 2020 All Ireland Finalists with ease last weekend. Waterford aren't going anywhere if they continue this.

The lack of physical contest is getting embarrassing at this stage. No shoulders...maybe a half a one. Some good short passing but tge way it's gone its nearly none touch now
