Serena is far from invincible...she can be bloody basic at times..

I just want to let everyone know in case you'd forgotten, that according to the amazon prime commentators Serena Williams is representing all the working moms out there and thats putting extra pressure on her.

Missed what happened there...why was Serena going mental at the umpire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭jamescd

Serena having a meltdown. She needs to regain her composure if she wants to extend this match.

I have a daughter I stand for whats right.

What an insufferable, arsehole Serena Williams is.

Sorry if people think I'm going on a bit about her or being harsh on Williams but she's just such a pain.

Toys out of pram time for Serena. Coaching violation thing seems a bit weird, didn’t see what happened, but she’s embarrassing herself again and good to see Osaka keeping her focus through it.

Would be some achievement for Ōsaka to win this with the crowd against her and Williams sounding off every chance she gets

She received a one point penalty for getting 2 warnings.

The coaching incident and the smashing of the racket.

She got a warning for coaching or something earlier. Then she smashed her racket so Osaka got a free point.

I did think umpire had retracted the coaching thing but obviously he hadn’t or couldn’t.

Serena has lost the plot. The post-natal hormones have gotten to her.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 537 ✭✭✭Niles Crane

    Umpire is doing his job.

She's now lost a game penalty.

    Good enough for her.

    This is fantastic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Serena the drama queen. Umpire should just tell her to do one. Her coach was making suggestions to her and the umpire saw it, get over it Serena

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 537 ✭✭✭Niles Crane

She is now bringing out the feminist angle.

Disgraceful behaviour from her, she's an embarrassment.

No reason for him to. Despite what she claimed, it's not his problem if she got coaching or not, nor if she was listening or not. The rule is if the umpire, or a lines person, sees the box communicate with the player, it's a violation. They don't have to know what was being communicated, and it is up to the player to put a stop to it.

This is a disgrace from Williams.

I just hope Osaka doesn't lose her focus after all this crap from Serena.

Fingers crossed. She’s been excellent. Only 20, could easily lose her composure unfortunately.

    Well done Osaka.

Unfortunately Williams meltdown will be the main story from the match.

I wonder will Serena do a post-game interview.
There was booing in the crowd after the match ended.
    Toxic atmosphere.
    Bizarre stuff.
Still going on about it after the end.
Takes the gloss off her opponent's moment of glory.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭764dak

    Haha, Serena got wrecked.

Properly embarrassing and disgraceful stuff from Serena. The mask slips once again. What should be the greatest moment of Osaka's life will be completely overshadowed by this farce.

Yep, but it was caused by Osaka's great play. She'll blame the umpire, but the fact is that her coach signalling her was because Osaka was beating her, the breaking of the racket was because Osaka was too strong for her, and her disrespect to the umpire was because she had no answers to Osaka and needed someone to blame and vent at.

    Twitter is awful atm.

I mean yes call racism out when you can it most certainly exists, e.g white cops killing black kids and getting away with it and that "president", but **** of with accusing this umpire of racism.

Serena is an icon, but Jesus she has always been so unlikable for so much of her career. Venus on the other hand has always been class personified.

6 double faults from Williams in 2 sets - damming.

Outrageous carry on from Serena Williams. She should be ashamed of herself but she won't be.

Sadly that is the way the world has gone, if you offer any criticism anymore of any supposed minority the racism/sexism card if pulled straight away.

crowd booing at the end is a disgrace, but then again the USOpen crowd isn't usually known for decency...

major meltdown from Williams but, and although I have very little time for her, I rather thought that a coach waving his hand in the air from the box was generally ignored by umpires? she was probably surprised at least that the coach got pulled for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,534 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

Patrick Mouratoglou says: "If I'm honest I was coaching, [but] I don't think she looked at me."

Ramos got everything spot on. The commentary team on Amazon are an embarrassment calling it extraordinary or excessive. She threatened his career, called him a liar and called him a thief. How it's anything other than verbal abuse is beyond me.

I will say though, that this is part of tennis that I think is unfair for both players, making them sit there in such an exposed, public place, waiting for the presentation. Let them go in the back, talk to their teams, and compose themselves a little while the preparations are being made. 10 minutes might just help calm everyone down. Even in a boring final when nothing happens apart from tennis, it's still a final, and emotionally draining for both players, give them a few minutes privacy with their teams.

Also hope the real story of the match doesn’t get lost. Serena didn’t play well but Osaka was class, proper CLUTCH player. Did lose that service game in second but only after a titanic struggle and went and immediately got it back. Feel sorry for her if the victory is tarnished slightly by Serena’s sh!tshow. Shouldn’t be, a new star arriving is the true narrative of what we witnessed tonight.

Commentators said that he seemed to be making a push forward gesture as if instructing her to push up when returning serve.

If no coaching is allowed then really they should be up in the press box or in the dressing room where they cannot be seen by the players.

Osaka is distraught here. She's been robbed, despite Serena's too little, too late "don't ruin it for her" schtick.

The crowd showed an absolute and utter lack of any respect, class or decency.

If you conduct yourself like a professional throughout the match and don’t have a tantrum because the other player is better then you then you can sit waiting for the presentation and hold your head up high even though you lost.

We are just missing some 'lock her up' chants to kick in.
A lot of players get...hints...from their box a lot if the time and I think Williams can feel a bit annoyed to be pulled for it ( Toni Nadal used to basically send down faxes) , but, there's no excuse for her subsequent carry on

That 24-slam record is hanging like a millstone around Serena's neck, didn't think she would be so nerve-riddled in these last two finals. Quite entertaining though I must say :pac:

Horrific behaviour by Serena, Really feel for Osaka this evening, much stronger player tonight.

On a funnier note, I'm watching a Euro sport 1 stream from god knows where, and they didn't notice Del Potro won last night, Their promo has Nadal V Djok for the final

I think that the umpire should not have awarded a game penalty at such a crucial time in a grand slam final. She called him a point thief, sor something. Big deal - I have seen far worse pass without sanction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

I don’t know why the umpire should be singled out for any blame, stood firm under intense provocation and applied the rules. Serena should be directing her ire towards her coach if she needs to blow off steam, he’s the real villain of the piece, surely?

That was just the straw that broke the camel's back. She didn't get the penalty for calling him a point thief, she got it for her abusiveness towards him in the run up to that point. Tennis is not a sport where you can be that abusive to one of the officials over that kind of prolonged span of time and not get a warning. It just so happened that it was her third warning in the match, so a game penalty.

Learn the rules. Who cares at what stage the game was awarded? She got a code violation for coaching, a 2nd code violation and point penalty for racket abuse, and a 3rd code violation, a game penalty for calling the umpire a liar and a thief?

You've seen worse than that pass without sanction, no code violation?
