Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ian O'Doherty was on for the first half hour. As usual he spouted a load of claptrap all while pretending to be right on and liberal. Today he had his attention turned to the recent "Beach Body Ads" from the London Underground. Essentially he said that everyone was getting upset over nothing, that people should have a thicker skin and that people have the right to get their "knickers in a twist" but really they were just jealous because the model in the Ad was hotter then them.

I know he just says this stuff to be controversial but it annoys me the way Sean lets him away with it because Sean finds him amusing (Although he did press him on a few things today.). Aside from the Fact that the Ad in question is likely photoshopped beyond all recognition and thus Is nt a genuine body for people to be envious of, the message of the ad is disgusting (ie don't take your clothes off in public unless you are at peak physical attractiveness), something O'Doherty conveniently ignores prefering to paint those opposed to the ad as jealous prudes who hate women's bodies.

What do others thing of O'Doherty and the way Moncrieff handles him. I usually turn it off when O'Doherty is on but it was Funny Friday on the other side which never fails to make me cry.

Ian O'Doherty is a breath of fresh air. I knew the Twitter feminists would freak out when he was on. It's rare to find someone on the radio who doesn't tow the PC line. Even presenters I like like Moncreiff and Matt Cooper are terrified over ever disagreeing with SJW/Feminist guests and allow them to spout their nonsense unquestioningly.

Everybody these days seems to think they are special flowers and their opinions are important somehow. They can't have a thought without having to share it online with their "followers". They pretend to be outraged over such trivial issues. They complain when a cat is killed in a storyline in a fictional tv show !!!! There are a lot of morons out their and social media has given them a voice.

Health supplement company use attractive model in poster advertisements. Cue faux outrage !!!!

Funny, I never saw everydaysexism hastags on any David Beckham posters.

He spouts the same sihte people like him have been spouting for years, its hardly a breath of fresh air.

Using the term feminist as an insult is possibly the most misogynistic and sexist thing I have ever heard.

For what its worth I don't consider myself a Feminist, twitter or otherwise.

I don't think the outrage is in anyway faux. I think it is entirely legitimate

If you think pictures of David Beckham in his underpants are sexist, you don't understand what sexism is

So when you said you wanted to know what people thought of Ian O'Doherty , it was only people who agreed with you ?

How did you infer I was using feminist as an insult ? I'm sure a lot of the people who were annoyed with him today would describe themselves as such.

Ads have always used more attractive people. Why should it cause offense ?

Anyway we can agree to disagree. You misandrist :)

I asked for your opinion, I got it and I have disagreed with it.

The part where you refered to "Feminists spouting their nonsense" raises the inference that you used it as an insult.
Ads have always used more attractive people. Why should it cause offense ?

It's not because they use more attractive people that they are offensive it is the effect of the ad and the message of the ad that are offensive. The ad in question have the effect of objectifying women's bodies (which David Beckham's Ads don't) and send the message that if you are woman you should not wear beach wear unless your body is at an unobtainable level of of attractiveness as if it anyones business what an individual person chooses to wear.
Anyway we can agree to disagree. You misandrist :)

    I'm no misandrist either! ;)

I find Ian O'Doherty a breath of fresh air as well... Particularly on a station like Newstalk where everything is so painfully politically correct... He is a brave guy to say what he says, and I can only presume that he gets dogs abuse from the liberals

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,966 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

Bullies aren't a breath of fresh air. He gets what he gives to anyone who happens not to be a straight white guy.

Wouldn't accuse Newstalk of political correctness.

    Hook.

I'm not particularly liberal, as such, but I heard that lad earlier and it was nothing more than trolling.

Could have made his points quite easily without the wind up nonsense. If he had, it might have been credible.

Moncrief is uber liberal.Just listen to his barely concealed hostility when David Quinn from the Iona institute is a guest.

Ian O'Doherty is just a poor man's Jeremy Clarkson. And Jeremy Clarkson is just a poor man's P.J. O'Rourke.

Reading his column is a bit like getting stuck beside a pub bore, stinking of stale beer and fags and prodding you every two seconds with his nicotine-stained fingers. A sad, grim little man, who has never had an original thought in his life, and who only appeals to the kind of witless dullards who think 'misandry' is an actual thing.

Hook might be politically liberal but he isn't politically correct, he still uses some outdated terms from time to time although he isn't objectionable about it inthe way O'Doherty is.

That's exactly what her is, a pub bore with ill-informed opinions and the need to spread them.

It seems Tara Duggan is now the de facto fill in for when Sean is off, it's got me wondering where's Fionn Davenport, it was nearly always him filling in for Sean in the last few years, now I can't remember the last time I heard him on Newstalk, has he left the station or something?

Got a travel reporter gig with a newspaper(forget which one)a while back . Presumably travelling quite a bit.
Prefer Tara Duggan in fairness, though it's not saying much.

    That makes sense

I can't stand Duggan, she has the harshest sounding voice I've ever heard and that alone is enough reason for me to switch off, thought Davenport was decent, not the same obviously, but still passable.

I've heard him do the travel slot on the Sean O'Rourke show a couple of times recently.

He stood in for Tom Dunne a couple of weeks back. Travel writing has always been his day job though, he's one of the editors of the Lonely Planet Guide and does a travel podcast for the Irish Times. He is also married to the Moncrieff Show's producer.

Jaysis Tara is struggling badly with ronan mullen. There's no flow in this at all. As we said before, Sean just lets them dig their own hole, whether it be conservative or socialist. But the bould senator is well under the skin of poor Tara and it's not even half time yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,966 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

Was just about to post something similar. He really had her rattled just before the break.

Jesus, Mullen really let the mask slip there. Horrible, nasty, weasling, condecending little bully of a man.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭jooksavage

Yep. I don't blame her though, she's only human. I know I'm biased against Mullen anyway but he outdid himself today: he gave it to everyone - the government, the media, the charities, the guards, the students. Of course, the danger is the YES side being complacent because of the quality of the opposition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Really didn't like the way he shouted over her and spoke down to her. Never heard him do that on Moncrieff before and you get the feeling he wouldn't have behaved that way if it was a man interviewing him.

I have to say I was just saying something similar to the women in the office, I can't put my finger on why but I thought the same, that if it was a male presenter he would not have been as condescending or as belligerent

    No food at all:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I was driving and had to get out of the car but I'm sure before I did I heard Tara say "coming up next the 'foodie slot'" - I noticed because she said 'Foodie', when Sean normally calls it 'Food'.
    Did they then skip it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,966 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

They didn't skip it, it was just that the guy who's doing it was late because of traffic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭Claude Burgundy

I turned off at 15:05 in disgust anyway:D

Food podcast was introduced with voiceover from Moncrieff saying that it was the food slot which is introduced by one of their 3 foodies, Kemp, Golden Bannon and the other lad from Galway - no mention of Paolo.....

did anyone hear the text from the listener who asked why did she make a point of calling the 3 of them a 'witches coven'. i was thinking the same thing. every time she fills in, at some stage it becomes a male v female thing. no one gives a shyte to be honest, but she always makes a point of it. are we meant to feel great because there is a female presenter, reviewer and sommellier all on together? we couldn't care less. just make it enjoyable for friday afternoons!!!

although jean smullen is no craic on a friday. the only ones that have the right humour for the slot are martin moran and dean mcguinness. that barrister chap from the business post is a buzz killington.

back to ronan mullen yesterday, when sean is there, he's used to having the flow and spouting his nonsense. sean knows what the listeners will think anyway. yesterday it was a hack trying to put him in a corner and he reacted....badly.

The whole interview was a farce. Tara should really have pointed out that Mullen interrupts and talks over everyone who challenges him in every interview he does. He also has a permanent victim mentality, he sees all of society as against him, but cant see that maybe he is wrong.

Will be glad when referendum is over and he disappears for a while

I just listened back to the whole interview.I thought Mullen was reasonable and made some points I haven't heard before,on the surrogacy issue particularly.

Sort of off-topic, but Newstalk's online streaming has been a lot more stable today. It hasn't skipped backwards at any time since I started listening at about 1:35pm.

Think it's been a few months since Shane Byrne last was on, was a good chat about Matt O'Connor, Sean doesn't strike me as having a huge interest in sport but he's well able to bullsh1t his way through a conversation on it, he did as good a job any sports presenter would in that chat.

That fella talking about getting his partner to have a breast enlargement sounded a bit mental, but Sean admitted they had him on for a laugh.
