Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Im curious, has any boardsies met any other boardsies in real life?

And if so how did you get on?

And if you posted against each other did you feel awkward in regards to say meeting

Haven't shagged a boardsie yet :( and probably never will now...
Unless my wife signs up! ;)
    But!
I have sold a coffee machine and a few other bits to fellow boards members as well as buying from some.

All fantastic people from the interactions I've had and would be happy to meet again!
For pints, Lols or perhaps even a shag! :P

There was a great shagging scene in the boardsian world about 5 or 6 years ago but then a few creeps and weirdos tried to strong arm their way in and it all went underground

There was a really decent social culture around the site up to about 8-10 years ago. Plenty of meets ups and general craic.

All just kind of fell apart as lots of the original membership moved onto other things/got older, and as mentioned above, a couple of creepy weirdos decided to use meetups as opportunities to stalk women.

I was never at one but remember them going on alright.

When boards was smaller there used to be many beer meetings or sports activities.
I went to several and always had a good time.
There are still meetups in Motors etc

I know one, however we've been acquainted long before this boards malarkey. We tend to stay out of each other's way, he frequents his forums and I have mine. Pleasant chap who is a champion debater. Would I meet some of the reprobates here for a jar? Why not, spinmaster flash is top of the list. Always keen to unravel fictional character(s).

Met plenty of people selling and buying before adverts came to be. One of the lads I bought a few bits off was a big liverpool fan and me and him ended up going to the Champ League semi final in liverpool in 2005 together :)

Can’t say the desire to go for pints together is reciprocated, Bertie. Never had much time for morose and/or maudlin drunks.

When Boardsies get together do you have to quote each other as your're chatting?

...and bring some printout's of gifs and hold them up at appropriate times.

Not really, but I do recall a few people saying thanks, in response to other people joking about.

I've met well over a hundred at this stage, which I think happens when a forum you frequent is tied to a real world activity (cycling in this case). Some of them are lifelong friends at this stage.

We had a 5 a side soccer going for a while in Limerick for boardies. The first night we had an extra person there who had gone to the wrong pitch, so we had to go through the usernames to figure out who was who. To have people put their hands up and sheepishly say 'yeah, that's me' when each of the names was called out was quite funny.

This poster continuously takes unprovoked potshots at me and constantly makes baseless accusations about me holding multiples accounts or lying about my gender without proof. Meanwhile whenever I say anything back some spotty geek will emerge from the shadows and scold me, the victim, for being too aggressive. This is a farce.

Bertie’s Horse, stick to nursing your alcohol problem and pretending to be a witty raconteur and leave me the **** alone. You weirdo.

    Mod:

This ends. Now. Any potshots at each other by either of you in AH again and bans will follow.

Way back in the snowmageddon of 2010 I was stranded up in the Bluestacks in Donegal for weeks, literally, three inches of ice on the road and my car would not have coped..

    Not enough food or fuel...

So along comes a knight in shining 4 wheel drive! Stocked with food and gas and coal... Yep a Donegal boardsie!..

They were so good to me up there. A log - cutting party later on; that was Smashey I think . Hated leaving but the landlord came home from abroad and wanted his house back.

That's lovely. You must have been so grateful to them :)

I've only met one 'Boardsie' in real life. It was a former moderator of this forum who sent me a message looking for advice on what to do in Frankfurt. I very generously offered to become their guide for the day, and even brought them to a restaurant that was probably slightly outside their budget range considering the hotel they were staying in.

I have this image of Boards beers that would turn me right off ever attending one. Two types of men: dweebish looking sorts with patchy facial hair and enormous 'metalhead' sorts wearing combat trousers. Lots of Playstation wallets with a velcro fastener, t-shirts with slogans, and vaping pens the size of a small shoebox. The air heavy with cheap aftershave and odours from their damp runners. The conversations mostly about other people not in attendance, atheism, computer games, and lame references to coke and hookers. Lots of uncomfortable silence with the occasional guffaw or cynical scoff.

Used to be lots of boards beers back in the day, half my college was on it, it was how we communicated before unlimited mobile plans were the norm and we could text each other to arrange a night out..

Don’t know if I’d do it now, love the anonymity of it, always did, not that I have a particularly controversial opinion on anything but still..

Met up with a good few, dated one or two and inadvertently caused a marriage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

Met a few. Never went to a beers but wouldn’t be keen. Didn’t a previous poster have a negative experience with a creep at one and it was handled badly? That wouldn’t exactly encourage you to go.

That could have happened at any gathering or occasion. I've been to a number of beers and meet ups. Every one of them was positive and some were very memorable :)

Went out with one for the guts of two years, did the hand-fasting at another's wedding and have been to numerous beers over the years, including an AH one last year (I think? My sense of time has been fubared by this year).

The edgelord idiots tend not to go to the beers for obvious reasons. I've always had a great time at them. The creep incident people keep referring to is notorious at this stage but I'd like to think it would be dealt with differently now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,019 ✭✭✭davycc

I am on on board's over 20 years so I have been to loads from soccer to to car meet-up to.. I went to a Xmas Beers once and had no stalker problem all good.

I've met a few mostly through buying and selling stuff and stay in touch with some of them from time to time, there are a few local folks in and around the village that are members but it's like Fight Club rules when it comes to the locals.

    What was the creep incident?!

    I don't know and don't care tbh.

Allegedly a category mod took an upskirt photo of another boardsie. Or something like that. It's part of the 'dark history of Boards we aren't allowed talk about'.

If you rewind the clock about 10 years there was a vibrant enough culture of meet ups and beers: most people I met were quite normal. But the average age of everyone on the site is 10 years further along and there's less of a meet up and get smashed kind of outlook now, even before all this recent shyte.

Though I wasn't a regular poster in AH or the likes back then. Being around AH and CA has really brought home the high proportion of absolute weirdos on the site - but most of the likes of these wouldn't come within an asses roar of a meet up or actual social contact.
