Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For those of you that remember The Metal Show with John Kenny he is presenting THE CLASSIC ROCK HOUR at the moment on radio 1. Not sure if it’s a nightly show.

    Demographic shift in action.

Tuesday-Thursday in place of the late debate which has seemingly gone into hibernation for an unspecified period. Rather odd decision it seems to me but always good to hear some of the old standards at any time.

    Is it cost cutting?

Where the fook is Late Debate??

You'd swear there was nothing going on in the world of importance at the moment.

Something oddly satisfying hearing The Cure, REM, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple on RTE Radio 1 at night time its like a victory for my mis-spent teenage years !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Yeah, though its not as if you wouldn't hear most of those bands, and on a fairly regular basis, on creedon. Just a less eclectic mix i guess.

Anyway, nothing beat the punk night Alf McCarthy used run on Fridays during his stint on Late Date. Now, that was truly something.

Good stuff! Only lacked some more instrument smashing at the end, but otherwise faultless.

Doubt it on the basis you'd have non stop music on the station from 8-2am. But could be with us a while yet at least.

John was on ‘Arena’ earlier in the evening, saying as long as there is no sport at all in the foreseeable future...let there be rock!

When John's very popular 2FM Metal Show finished up in 1999, John had a similar (to what is on Radio 1 now) classic rock show on 2FM on Sunday's 6pm to 8pm.

I'm old enough to remember John Kenny presenting punk/new wave shows on Dublin pirates in the late 1970s and early 1980s!

One of JKs other shows on 2FM was the Weekend Hotline on a Saturday in late 80s/early 90s..or the Hotline during the week, covering when Tony Fenton was on holidays.

JK moved into RTE Sport in 1992, while at the same time presenting 2FM music shows. When hourly sports bulletins started on 2FM in 1992, he was the first to read them.

    ‘Symphony Of Destruction’ by Megadeth!

I have had not heard that show so far. I'm not in the habit of listening to Radio One and I don't often listen that time of a weeknight when I am at home (which is a lot these days!).

I must make an effort to listen next week.

So with the exception of Radio 1 replay 2am to 3am, there is music shows from 8pm to 7am on Radio 1 these nights/mornings..John Creedon, John Kenny, Cathal Murray, RTE Gold relay, Shay Byrne.

Would have loved to have heard this.
Is there a playback facility or podcast available or anyway of listening back to any of the John Kenny shows from the last few weeks?? Bit of a novice at the whole world of podcasts.
Gave a quick look online but couldn't find anything.

RTÉ Radio App has a listen back facility and can quickly find last night’s program. He played Come as you are, Lithium and Smells like Teen Spirit from Nevermind.

I tuned in last night with one ear (plugged in) on the radio and one ear on the television. It was grand for an hour. John Kenny actually played it safe last night, compared to some of the selections that I saw mentioned for the previous week. It would not have been out of place on Radio Nova. He was definitely providing a service for those who do not have access to Radio Nova on FM.

I always liked John Kenny as a broadcaster, and I like the way he gave a bit of information about the artistes he was playing. That's always a good sign for me in a music presenter - they are interested in what they are doing. I will give it another listen for the curiosity factor as much as anything else.

Just to remind everyone raving about this Radio 1 show, that JK also has a weekly show on RTE Digital radio 2XM "The JK Experience" since 2007.

Kind of highlights the failure of 2XM to make any sort of impact tho doesnt it....
Which is a shame, seems the appetite is there.

I listened again last night. My word! John Kenny had a very different music selection from the previous night. It was quite an eclectic mix of rock: alternative, blues, three tracks from the "Black Album" by Metallica and On The Waterfront by Simple Minds!

The likes of Joe Satriana and Stevie Ray Vaughan reminded me of Pat James' Off The Record show on digital station Radio Nova Classic Rock. John opened up with Public Image by Public Image Ltd., which reminded me of his new wave shows in his early pirate days. It certainly was an interesting mix of tunes that he squeezed into an hour - he ran out of time when playing Enter Sandman by Metallica!

It will be interesting to see what kind of mix he has tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

JK is playing it safe with most of his selections..a bit of metal or less often heard alternative rock would go down a treat!

Haven’t heard that Skunk Anansie song in an age!

    Followed by Posion’s ‘Unskinny Bop’...good call :o:D
