    I agree. I'm going to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt and assume they were removed out of caution, in case they were vandalised and pulled from their pedestals.

    That said, if that was the goal - they have rather ironically drawn more attention to them. If they have to be reinstated due to planning then they will certainly need protection now.

    Why would they be vandalised? No other statues have been in Ireland.

    I doubt anyone even knew they depicted slaves or cared before this.

    the problem is, if somebody in there twigged it then it probably wasn't long before somebody on social media did.

    We have no other statues of anything slavery related that I'm aware of.

    One post on twitter reshared by a PbP candidate and boom they'd be covered in spray paint by midnight.

    They might as well destroy every copy of Gang's of New York too, there's a few scenes where the Irish were mistreated.

    Then get rid of all the classy photography of the Irish building America.

    Ironically it's our own people who shame us and tell us we should feel bad about our forefathers, I say fck you build a bridge and get over it.

    SJWs and lefty liberals who are basically the new clergy, trying to instill their own guilty conscience on us, because the real racism comes from the liberals, social justice warriors and hard line lefties.
    They're the sick psychos rilling everyone up.

    I was never a racist's or looked down on anyone and the majority of people aren't racist either..

    Pulling down statue's, banning dvds,books, music, erasing history...

    Sounds very toxic when you look at it.

    History is in the past and now we're in the present,it's gone...

    If you don't like the past and it's triggering, go for therapy and maybe get a prescription from your GP if it's bothering you that much..

    Never really knew what the statues represented but often admired them as I passed by

    I’d like to see them reinstated for the historical value of them if nothing else

    Whoever is responsible for removing the statues should be brought before the courts and a heavy fine imposed.

    Quite disgraceful to see them removed

    Friend of mine who stays there regularly says standards have plummeted there since the American takeover.

    Seemingly breakfast which used to be one of the best in dublin, is absolute cr*p now

    Is there no allowance for context these days at all. The statues don't depict lads hauling massive blocks into place to build the pyramids. Them boys deffo had a rough time of it. However handmaiden to a princess? Probably as cushy a number as was going back then.

    I doubt it. Ireland had its weekend of brainlessly aping the US and then came to its senses. The Shelbourne would be secure and have doormen 24/7? You'd need a large mob to vandalise and get away with it. I don't see where that anger is coming from.

    Liberty is about freedom, inclusion and fair play and justice for all...
