Aye. And I'd say that about wraps it up for St. Patrick's Day - by all accounts Patricius of Britain was a slave. Actually, come to think of it the Irish captured and enslaved him, so we'll have to go as well. :pac:

It's American owned so that's the reason. Bringing their stupid cancel culture over here.

The only rational reason for removing these statues is to stop idiots in masks vandalising them and the rest of the hotel along with them.

I agree. I'm going to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt and assume they were removed out of caution, in case they were vandalised and pulled from their pedestals.

That said, if that was the goal - they have rather ironically drawn more attention to them. If they have to be reinstated due to planning then they will certainly need protection now.

Why would they be vandalised? No other statues have been in Ireland.

I doubt anyone even knew they depicted slaves or cared before this.

the problem is, if somebody in there twigged it then it probably wasn't long before somebody on social media did.

We have no other statues of anything slavery related that I'm aware of.

One post on twitter reshared by a PbP candidate and boom they'd be covered in spray paint by midnight.

Could we use the Shelbourne as a DP centre?

Did Luke Kelly own slaves that we don't know about??

They might as well destroy every copy of Gang's of New York too, there's a few scenes where the Irish were mistreated.

Then get rid of all the classy photography of the Irish building America.

When is this nonsense going to stop ???

Will we all implode, sure get rid of all the history books too oh and while we're at it let's all implode with shame for the guilt that should be ingrained in our DNA...

Sheer ignorance of our past, there's always been slavery, war etc

Us Irish are the butt of joke's all over the world and us sane Irish embrace our quirks and ways.

So what, some people think we're a joke etc and that's ok with me.

There's old pictures of us looking like Neanderthal's, so what they're pictures get over it.

We were down trodden by the sasanachs for hundreds of years, fck em they're gone but some people are just programmed to feel fear, anger and resentment...

Ironically it's our own people who shame us and tell us we should feel bad about our forefathers, I say fck you build a bridge and get over it.

SJWs and lefty liberals who are basically the new clergy, trying to instill their own guilty conscience on us, because the real racism comes from the liberals, social justice warriors and hard line lefties.
They're the sick psychos rilling everyone up.

I was never a racist's or looked down on anyone and the majority of people aren't racist either..

Pulling down statue's, banning dvds, books, music, erasing history...

Sounds very toxic when you look at it.

History is in the past and now we're in the present,it's gone...

If you don't like the past and it's triggering, go for therapy and maybe get a prescription from your GP if it's bothering you that much..

    Have a good day :)

Never really knew what the statues represented but often admired them as I passed by

I’d like to see them reinstated for the historical value of them if nothing else

Whoever is responsible for removing the statues should be brought before the courts and a heavy fine imposed.

Quite disgraceful to see them removed

If there has been a breach of planning legislation and a valid complaint is lodged to their Enforcement section they are then obliged to act by investigating and if necessary issuing an enforcement notice, which if not complied with should result in enforcement proceedings. If a member of the public is of the opinion the council failed to take appropriate action then they should lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman.

The very fact that the statues have now been removed will make them a target if there are reinstated.

America - The land of the free d1ckheads.

Friend of mine who stays there regularly says standards have plummeted there since the American takeover.

Seemingly breakfast which used to be one of the best in dublin, is absolute cr*p now

Pop tarts American waffles and microwaved bacon etc etc.

Regular Patron of the hotel and was never bothered by the sculpture.

are you a descendant of an african slave?

We are all descendants of Africans if you go back far enough into the mists of human prehistory

Is there no allowance for context these days at all. The statues don't depict lads hauling massive blocks into place to build the pyramids. Them boys deffo had a rough time of it. However handmaiden to a princess? Probably as cushy a number as was going back then.

First they came for the socialists...

While I agree, people probably never noticed however statues have been vandalized by idiots before in Ireland.

Next we’ll have some ‘radical’ saying that the statue of Jim Larkin in O ‘Connell st should be removed and replaced with a BLM emblem.

Why bother starting again? The same fu**heads will still exist afterwards.

I doubt it. Ireland had its weekend of brainlessly aping the US and then came to its senses. The Shelbourne would be secure and have doormen 24/7? You'd need a large mob to vandalise and get away with it. I don't see where that anger is coming from.

Let's not forget about all the statues pulled down by centrists/capitalists.

It was for freedom when they did it though....

I often wonder do these New wave liberals have mental health problems or something seriously wrong with their cognitive make up.

Liberty is about freedom, inclusion and fair play and justice for all...

These cnuts are not liberal, they're toxic and sad, boring, nothing to add to society only they subtract from society.

Empty vessels make the most noise, pot calling the kettle you'll say.

But I say fck em, thankfully I'm a moderate in the middle laughing at the knobs, alt right and far left they're all cnuts

That's hilarious. Took them until 2020 to think "Hmm, slavery might be bad form."

Or is it that they felt the need in these foolish times to think it had any relevance to a hotel in Dublin.

    They are highly religious.

The left used be political, it is now a faith.
