6-2 7-5 was a convincing win in Rome. Am I crazy to think Diego has a legit shot at taking Nadal?

He gave him a really tough match a few years ago but Rafa came through, he has a chance for sure, but beating Rafa here is a monumental effort.

Maybe Sinner does Diego a favor?

Betting fav to win the ladies Swiatek in all sorts of bother early on...

Thiem was tired very early, you could see signs in the first set. Nothing left at all in the 5th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Too easy for Swiatek ("Schwee-ontik" as Lindsay Davenport pronounces it). Could do with improving her drop shots, some rather pitiful efforts there.

Yes pretty disappointing stuff by Thiem

His only excuse really is that he still hasn't fully reset himself after winning the slam as the French followed on so quickly after.

Definitely not going to be in the class of the big 3.

More of a Murray than a Djokovic and maybe that's being unkind to Murray.

Sinner really taking the ball early.

    Having a go.

    Taking it to Nadal.

    Nice to see.

Schwartzman is a fine competitor. Not too surprised he beat Thiem.

Sinner up a break serving for the set now.

Midnight in October probably not Nadals preferred French Open environment, I think it's fair to say

The wizened prune takes the set in the end.

Sinner could easily have tied that set up before the breaker if he didn't hit those occasional really sloppy shots and too many 2nd serves along with his brilliant work.

Enthralling first set, if inevitable outcome. Hope he can make a match of it although not looking likely with the trainer on court. Hope I'll wake up to find out Sinner pulled off the unthinkable, but..

What's the rationale behind playing a quarter final at this ridiculous time?
It's not fair to the players, whose bio-rhythms will be knocked seriously out of sync.
Whoever wins this, probably won't be able to get to sleep before 4am French time.
That's not the right preparation for a FO semi final in a few days time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,898 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Sinner playing well here, looks like he could be a serious contender and could have a very good career ahead of him. Nadal looks very uncomfortable, possible upset on the cards.
It's crazy that they are still playing at this time, are they going to play to a finish or do they have to stop at a certain time?

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

Skinner is fun to watch, but Nadal will just wait him out, he is going to beat himself

Had this late a match been played at RG before?

Nope, this is the first time they have had floodlights on the courts.

Era they'll be grand. Is it any different to the times they play until at US/Australian Opens?

Think Sinner's chance is gone, losing that break of serve.
The experience difference is showing, but, Rafa still not comfortable and with the crazy time this is being played at we might get a crazy result

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

After hanging around all day I'm sure they'd have wanted to play anyway, rather than having to come back again tomorrow. Bet rafa would have been fuming if they'd sent them away.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,309 Mod ✭✭✭✭mzungu

Sinner just needs to hang in there and take any opportunities that come his way. It would not be beyond him to make a good match of it.

    2-0 to Nadal now.
I expect the next set to be very straightforward for him.
He'll get to sleep earlier than I thought. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

Sinner has finally ceeded the baseline, the end is nigh. Nadal not enjoying this one bit but Sinner not showing enough patience at times. I will be looking out for him in the next few years, really good fun to watch.

impossible at RG, maybe in 5/6 years time but no one is beating him here for the forseeable....

The tournament is a total joke at this stage.

So many surprises in womens won't be shocked if kvitova loses to siegemund. Don't know what the record is for attempted drop shots but i'm betting siegemund will smash it this morning.

I am still sticking to my prediction that Nole or Nadal won't win this title..

Anyway, it's a bit sad on clay that an "old" man, Nadal, as good as he is is not being beaten by stronger and younger men...

    Nole in the QFs today?

Nadal even though he has started looking 50 (he mustn't like sunscreen) is 34 - not all that surprising that he can still compete especially in modern times with much better body maintenance knowledge, nutrition and training than there was even 10 years ago.

Agassi was still getting to GS finals at 35 and that was 15 years ago and lifetimes ago effectively in terms of athletes being able to compete longer at the highest level.

I get that, but he is still number 1 on clay....clay is a damn tough surface....

It's a little sad that 16 years on he is still the man to beat on this surface....

Be great to see another new slam winner, but, highly unlikely. More than likely, one will beat the other in the final. I'd put Djokovic as favourite.

Djokovic seems to have a niggle and has been broken in the first set.

Well he is the undisputed clay GOAT and that doggedness and obsessive compulsive disorder thing that he has going on means that he'll keep going and giving his all until he can't.

    Nole a set down..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,159 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Moping around the court letting everyone know he has a problem. He does this all time, usually followed by him upping a gear and trouncing his opponent. The alternative though is he goes a break or two down in this set and then just quits.

Doesn't seem fully right so far Djokovic - whether it's something that he can shake off or more serious remains to be seen.

First set that he has lost this championship they said.

Djokovic hanging on at the moment.

CB threw away a break there

    Very enjoyable contest.

    Nole was very impressive.

The king of clay Rafa will be have his hands full if they meet.

    Vamos Nadal.

Carreno Busta alongside young Sinner has a bright future.

I must have been watching a different match to you. Thought he struggled throughout against a fairly limited PCB. First set was shocking, Djokovic definitely raised his level afterwards but seems to be a physical issue there.

ND was not exactly fully right but CB wasn't exactly a world-beater tonight so he (ND) could get through.

Depends on how the bicep thing (left) gets sorted / sorts itself out.

    Apologies

He was poor in the first set.

The neck/arm injury seemed to impede him in that first set.

I thought Carreno Busta played well but failed to capitalise on his opportunities.

    This only my opinion.:)

Carreno is 29 which in tennis terms is somewhat old.:p

He is what he is, a limited version of Ferrer, nothing wrong with that, got to the US open semi final last month. I don't expect him to clear up whatsoever but he can vulture some events once the oldies slow down .

Sinner though is obviously the real deal.

Did Busta say/imply after the match that Djokovic's supposed injury was just gamesmanship?

    https://tennishead.net/djokovic-accused-of-feigning-injury-by-carreno-busta-he-has-been-doing-it-for-years/
“He didn’t surprise me [that he asked for a physio],” Carreno Busta told the press of Djokovic.

“It’s a good thing. It’s a sign that he is losing and that I was playing well, because he always does that.

“It’s something that he has been doing for years. When he is down, he asks for the trainer.”

Djokovic will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday for a place in the final – his first top ten opponent since the Australian Open in January.

Well Djokovic didn't seem to be moving that well to me until into the second set - he didn't even move to go for some shots.

    He said

    https://tennishead.net/i-had-some-pain-but-i-dont-want-to-reveal-too-much-says-novak-djokovic-after-quarterfinal-win/
“I had some neck issues and some shoulders issues, I don’t want to reveal too much as I am still in the tournament,” Novak Djokovic explained. “Pain faded away as the match went on and I warmed up.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining and obviously he was a better player for a set and a half. I was hitting myself, which I don’t recommend.

“I definitely didn’t feel great on the court for an hour, hour and a half. I definitely didn’t feel great coming into the court today.

“A few things happened in the warmup. I had to deal with those physical issues coming onto the court.

“As the pain went on, I felt much better. I didn’t feel as much pain.

“But, you know, I don’t want to take away anything from his good performance. Especially for a set and a half he was the better player, dictating the play.

“I was very neutral. I didn’t have much of energy really happening in my legs or movement or game itself. It took me about a set and a half to get comfortable and start really playing the way I should.

Djokovic's new tactic to vent his frustration seems to be to hit himself with the racket.

Fair enough considering he gave away a certain Grand Slam in New York.

He did more than imply it.

funny kind of gamesmanship to give up the first set.....
