Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Went to a petting farm last weekend, it was lambing season, last year went too, got to bottle feed lambs, calves, baby goats. AHHHHH pretty sure I burst into confetti at the sight of baby cows.

I used to hang out around cows when I was young thinking about what happened to them, it was really what made me want to stop killing them.

Cow above is just attempted sucking, very cute.

Has anyone been to VegFest in London? We plan on going this year but just wondering what its like? The prices of the food etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

Ye I'm pretty sure my sister was at the last one, sounded really good, she got a nice bag there and sent me marshmallows anyway. And we had gone to the vegan street day in Dortmund which was kinda lame and she did say vegfest was a way different. Not sure about prices and stuff, I'd have to ask her about it again. But I'd say London alone would be reason enough to go, I've never been but they have awesome vegan stuff from what I hear from her, it would be a cool place to check anyway.

Just the way the GBP/Euro rate is going at the moment London prices for anything would make your eyes water - we went to Edinburgh last month and really felt the cost of everything - and Edinburgh ain't London. Damn these European bankers anyways!

I heard it was pretty good, thinking of going myself this year too for a day anyway maybe. I'm sure the food prices are absolutely horrendous but like don't mind sticking it out for a day and I love bobbing around London for whatever reason so long as it's not raining.

Was chatting to her there again, she said it was excellent, the bag she got was £30 and she paid around £7 for a meal, she didn't find the prices crazy so I dunno, suppose like any city. I'd like to go sometime, its on late in the year I think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,463 ✭✭✭loveisdivine

We've gone for 1 passionfruit and 1 lemon. Cant wait now.

I think tickets go on sale in June and they will be buy one get one free for a while.

We only decided to go because Doug Stanhope ( a comedian who we love) is doing a show the same weekend just around the corner from VegFest. So it was a no brainer really.

I'm boring and got the same one again. Must look him up, don't know him. For extra stalking. :D

Did you order from Marvelous before? She's lovely and the food is so good. I saw her yesterday zooming around on her Rollerblades making a delivery, I live right beside them

I posted about ducks who need to be rehomed or will be sent to slaughter because they've stopped laying.

'Are they being killed needlessly or to eat?'

Clearly the word needless means different things to us...

Ethical Dilemna - We've just started out rock climbing and we're really enjoying it, but we really need to start wearing proper rock climbing shoes instead of runners! Most are made from leather :( We have the option to rent shoes when we need them which will almost undoubtedly be leather. Or we can buy our own. The more affordable ones will be leather, vegan ones are obviously quite a bit more expensive.

    :(

Evolv have vegan ones, not sure how dear. They are all dear enough, cheapest one s at my local climbing wall are ~65. You want them to have a good tight fit too so it's annoying to not try something like that on, as they would be cheaper online.

I know it sucks in general right! I ordered footwear yesterday that I liked for 20E, down from 80. Noticed it had some leather and had to cancel. Had to spend over 60 then on the same brand with no leather grr (and that was sale price).

    Absolutely loving this fineeeee weather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,463 ✭✭✭loveisdivine

The main issue with buying online is we really need to try them on. Especially as this is our first ever pair, so its not like we know how they fit or anything.

I'm gonna ring the local place now and see if they can get any in or something. Thanks!

I really dont wanna have to rent smelly leather ones.

Weather is classss. But I took off my hat cycling and now I dropped it somewhere hmm.
Yeah they do need to fit well, cool hobby, people from my work go sometimes at lunch. Renting the shoes quickly adds up to the cost of shoes too.
Work just gave me health insurance woop! Now to not ever use it hopefully :p

Ethical dilemna (I refuse to spell it "dilemma"): leather car interiors. Standard in higher end vehicles. Usually plasticy fake and optional in lower end vehicles. I don't really do low end stuff however :(

The tesla can come with vegan interior, also i want a ride when you get it ta

my friend bought a bmw i3 recently, spent a lot jaysus, was vegan though.
So the low and really high end are the only options? That's really ****

things like tyres may not be vegan either, pain in the ass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Level 5 Vegan

Michelin tyres are vegan but also very expensive - fitted 4 last year at a whopping €520

Terribly bad, there is a reason we are in the next great extinction, pity it is us.
I wonder will there be a business writing apps for self drive cars?

I would say so, that should be a pretty cool area of work once we see the entertainment systems that are put in cars. However a lot of it may be android apps that already exist and the like.

Shocking - it's one thing for a species to go extinct due to changes in the environment or what have you, but it's another to be driven to extinction by the ignorance of humanity - they reckon it was homosapiens who killed off neantherthals, so looks like we're still going strong at it :(

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

Here are some sad facts about humanity:

The rapid loss of species we are seeing today is estimated by experts to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate.
These experts calculate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year.
If the low estimate of the number of species out there is true - i.e. that there are around 2 million different species on our planet - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year.
But if the upper estimate of species numbers is true - that there are 100 million different species co-existing with us on our planet - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year.

Absolutely, can't beat a drop of Full Sail on a lovely sunny afternoon!

On a side note, I've just moved back to Ireland
and noticed that the veggie Spice Burgers had a shorter than hoped run in shops. Does anyone know when they stopped selling them or if anywhere might still do them?

It's one of those thing that I never expected to have a veggie version and can't believe they stopped so soon!
