Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Okay the election is on Friday and I haven't a clue which candidate, if elected will benefit Sligo the most. Is there any website which lists each candidates policies? Have no idea who to vote for.

    smartvote.ie is a quick fire method. I won't say it's the best but it's a start!

Okay that is my duty as a responsible citizen fulfilled, voting for people I didn't want to vote for. I wasn't impressed by any of the candidates and never heard of 5 or 6 of them that were on the ballot sheet.

Duty done. Roughly 50% turn out at my booth about half an hour ago.

I went to vote and my name was already crossed off... It's not a common name so couldn't be a mistake like that. I had to show ID, which confused the situation further add I use my middle name and not first name.

Got to vote in the end anyway.

Tallies for Sligo available on this link: http://sligotally.azurewebsites.net/SligoTallies2016.htm

75 boxes open so far. Looking like MacSharry, Scanlon, Kenny (assuming he gets the expected Leitrim vote) and one FG. Not clear who yet but possibly McLoughlin.

No wonder the place is in the state it is, with the mutts returned for this constituency election after election, dunno anything about Kenny but McLoughlin and McSharry are mediocrities and Scanlon god help us even mediocrity is beyond his reach.

Scanlon is purely geographic imo. No alternative for South Sligo apart from him and Perry. Both awful candidates.

Geography is no excuse, there is talk of a "sea change" in Irish politics beyant on RTE, The whole map Political of Ireland has been changed ... but as the deluge subsides and the waters fall short we see the Numpty Buffs of Ballymote and Tubbercurry emerging once again.

If Caligula's horse could be persuaded to stand, he would do better than Scanlon. "The Neighs have it Ceann Comhairle".

Out of interest did anybody not bother to vote, was the turnout good! Was away myself so obviously didn't vote!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭Bebo stunnah

Turnout was about 2/3. In line with the rest of the country.

It's on the 7th count now with the leading candidate (McSharry) just under 3000 short of the quota. It's not looking like any of them are going to reach it which would leave us with 4 TDs who didn't get enough votes representing us. Just goes to show how p1ss poor our selection of candidates were.

This is so tight now for the fourth seat it's tough to call. Will come down to 8's, 9's and maybe even further down the line if people voted that far.
Scanlon to creep over the line after a recount if I was to put money on it. But there'll be less than 100 votes in it either way.

Yeah it may go to a recount? But they don't normally change anything - so which one gets the most votes tonight will have it I think.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,178 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Agree totally! Just saying I fully expect a recount. Even Reynolds representative on the radio saying there'll be 30/40 votes between them in the end.
With the candidates the transfers will be coming from I would expect that to favour Scanlon, but whether it will be enough to bridge the gap is up for debate.

Just want to say I've enjoyed the debate on the election with everyone here, and while we may not agree on who deserves or doesn't deserve a seat, their achievements or failures, I bare no ill will! We're all entitled to our opinions and that's the beauty of democracy.

Eamonn Scanlon FF final candidate elected. No recount needed in the end.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,178 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

There we have it. 4 candidates elected for Sligo/Leitrim constituency are:
    1. Marc MacSharry (FF)
    2. Martin Kenny (SF)
    3. Tony McLoughlin (FG)
    4. Eamon Scanlon (FF)
Amazing that FF regain the two seats they lost in 2011. SF retain their seat and FG lose one of theirs.

As a Ballymote man abroad I was following with a sort of impotence..

Delighted to see Perry gone. He gave me a job when I was 14/15 and is a friendly guy but a fücking shyster. A greedy gobshyte who mad a total fool of himself.

As for bubble Scanlon getting back in... How short are people's memories. Ah well.. :-/

7 days from the day of the election.

Rarely anything more cliched and annoying than people giving out about posters. I can only imagine how personally affected you were by the posters however...

They're not nonsensical and pointless. I bet everyone who says they 'don't work' are the same people claiming to be impervious to advertising. It's not tradition that keeps those posters going up, its effectiveness in creating name and face recognition.

What's annoying, nonsensical and pointless is the repeated faux outrage every election. Everyone knows the posters going up are for a finite and short amount of time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭red sean

They're legal litter and serve no purpose. Add them to all the rubbish thats put through our letterboxes and ask yourself how much mre face recognition do we need?
Has anyone ever voted for someone because of a poster?

I'd be in favour of banning them. Clearly they do serve a purpose or the parties wouldn't spend thousands and thousands on them, however if they were banned everywhere it would be fair for everyone.

Social media and knocking the doors should be enough to get your message across.

People actually voted him back in? I was actually hoping Reynolds would have got in before him. I know several people who didn't actually know he was a serving TD. Has he delivered anything substatial for the €688,000 he cost us over the last 5 years?

Fouund this. First preference votes for each candidate. Some interesting and slightly surprising results.

Plus, he's 72. Apparently it's a good quality in a public representative to do absolutely nothing for 5 years. I voted FG, and still left him off the ballot paper. Whatever you say about MacSharry or Kenny and the parties they represent, at least they're relatively young and may be of some use to the constituency.

McLoughlin is none of these things. Neither, quite frankly is Scanlon and I'm from Ballymote.

I found a good use for some discarded ones a few elections ago - they are great for keeping the weeds from growing on my veg boxes over the autumn/winter months -
They don't disintegrate and block out all they light - it was also satisfying to face the candidates mug muck down ;)

Otherwise I agree, don't see the point to them at all, if anything they sublimibly put me off voting for someone!
