    composters from Fingal County Council

    http://www.fingalcoco.ie/Environment/Recycling/Compost/
    Why Should I Compost?
By composting your garden or kitchen wastes you can reduce your household rubbish by about one third or even as much as half. Composting is a critical step in reducing the volume of waste needlessly sent to landfill for disposal. Composted organic material is also a very valuable resource. It can be used to feed your garden, potted plants, greenhouse plants and is also an excellent soil conditioner. It saves you money as you don’t need to buy garden compost.
From an environmental point of view, you are making an important choice in using peat-free compost in your garden. By choosing peat-free alternatives you are helping to protect Irelands remaining bogs. Home compost heaps can also provide a home for garden wildlife and provide food for birds and hedgehogs.
To encourage home composting Fingal County Council sell home compost bins at a reduced rate from any of our recycling centres. Payment will be accepted in bin tags or by credit or laser cards - cash will not be accepted.

    Rotating Compost Tumbler €64
    Freestanding Compost Cone €32
    Recycled Kitchen Caddy €8

    Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience this year with www.seedaholic.com, I ordered my seeds on monday lunchtime for this years veg growing and received them in tuesday mornings post. Was well impressed, got a little leaflet with each explaining about the variety, how to sow, plant and prepare the soil and the best bit they were a third of the price in the garden centres. Just to clarify I'm not connected with them other than being a pleasantly surprised and happy customer.:D

The odd thing with Lidl is there are some bargains but some items are more expensive than other suppliers. B&Q also have reductions on some garden products. It's all part of a cunning plan to get the season started !

Saw that too, was interested in a water butt until I looked at the English site http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/offers_week10Sunday10.htm £24.99 converts to €27.67 NOT €39.99!

I have just been looking for coarse vermiculite as an ingredient in a growing mix for a raised bed (following advice on squarefootgardening.com). B&Q sell vermiculite in 10l bags for about €7.50, which would work out v. expensive for the amount I need, but I found a Dublin-based company online called National Agrochemical Distributors (nad.ie) who quoted me €16.50 for 100l plus about a tenner to courier to me in Galway.

+1 for Seedaholic, I just used them for the first time and was very happy with their quick and friendly service.

These small loppers are superb & amazing value. I do more work with these that any of the four other pairs that I use. They are very light, fit in a big pocket & cut really well. Absolute bargain.

How can there be such a difference? thats massive

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,783 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

The Woodies ones have Diamuid Gavin's name on them !. But if you look at the manufacturer name & model they are the same.

I have used a lot of loppers & for sheer power these are very good - if a branch will fit between the blades it can easily be cut. You would not use them for lighter pruning as the ratchet mechanism has to reset between cuts.

had one of those diarmaid gavin lopers handles bent first time i used it , brought it back got refund , bought good one instead!

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,783 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

What were you trying to cut ?. I have been using mine for a year with no problems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 981 ✭✭✭mountainy man

was cutting back fuscia not that tough id a thought, one handle just bent like a banana ! wasn't impressed as you can imagine

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,783 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

Strange. I used mine a lot this winter & because of the ratchet, I only use them for the thick stuff. I have had no problems with tree branches, thick hedging etc. I would be cautious using them with the handles extended as there is a lot of leverage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 981 ✭✭✭mountainy man

ya, go easy with it,:D you must have got the good one !

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,783 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

I used to use the CK Power Loppers which had a lifetime guarantee. Amazingly I got them replaced three times over about 5 years when the plastic snapped - I think that they have given up on that idea.

I am a gardener so I am used to gentle finesse. What did you buy instead ?.

  • Registered Users Posts: 981 ✭✭✭mountainy man

got a pair of homebase own brand ones kinda strange sissor action pretty good for them ! you can also adjust the anvil as blade diminishes from sharpening , wasn't expecting too much from them but has done everything i have asked of them.:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,783 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

B&Q €185 for a self propelled mower & free strimmer. Not quality but very cheap.

Also Bosch Isio Lithium Ion grass shears & shrub/hedge pruner down from about €70 to €45. The hedge/shrub cutter is surprisingly good but ENSURE that you get the newer version with BLACK & SILVER blades as it is much better & both old & new are on the shelves together.

The new version has a very clever anti stall system that makes it able to cut thicker stems.

the funny thing about lidl and aldi, is when the new stuff come in it is gone in hours,
i said this to one of the till attendants there, to which they replied, it is the very same people every week who are in earliest, can you emagine the amount of hoarding these people must do

It is interesting which offers sell. This morning one guy bought 4 of the lawn scarifiers. Many Lidl items end up being sold at car boots for a profit. The €69 Aldi generators have appeared in Buy & Sell at a profit !.

They had not sold one of the €99 Sailing Jackets !. The ratchet secateurs are useful & the fleeces are good value. I bought a power washer on Monday & they were all gone by 9am.
