Yes, I'm in all 3 Irish banks, Dalata, CRH, Malin, Cairn, Glenveagh, Kingspan, Kerry, Mincon, Kenmare and Providence.

Providence and Malin the only dogs... the rest are all very nicely in the green for me

Cairn flying today, up 8% in early trade based on very upbeat trading statement

    https://www.independent.ie/business/commercial-property/cairn-homes-records-strongest-ever-performance-in-second-half-of-2021-41231578.html

FYI : I did my buying in back in 2020 and 2021, not looking to buy anything on the ISEQ at the moment. In fact (Malin aside), I have been selling recently... and focusing more on the US.

If I were buying though, it would be the banks and Dalata, exactly 👍

I'm tempted to take a punt on FBD Holdings... Can't base my decision on anything other than knowing they provide a good range of insurance services in Ireland and I'm a customer with positive experience in any of my dealings with them. Priced at 8.5 today. Over the past 5 years the price has ranged from a low of 6.36 to a high of 13.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,184 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Found them really good to deal with on a personal level, but wouldn't know their business well enough to advise on whether they are a good stock investment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 Green Penguin

FBD should be a steady enough performer but wouldn't expect to be doubling my money on them. On a pe of round 8ish which looks about reasonable. Main issue I'd have on this one is that any real increase in profits will draw the ire of the media/politicians etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭silver2020

AXA are targeting their core farming market very agressively

They started slowly in 2018 and last year got more aggressive in targeting the sector and they see it as a major growth area

This could see fbd's traditional stronghold get eroded

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Glenveagh up 32% since I bought it

    Ires up 20%

    hibernia up 15%

    ryanair up 13.5%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Glenveagh has been great. Looking forward to some kind of dividend too..... although I think they are more focused on share buybacks at the moment which has the effect of propping up the share price which is a more tax effecient method of putting money into shareholders pockets.

Once again kudos to whoever tipped me off to this company (thanked them already on this thread some months ago)

Whats happening with FBD. Iseq shows a 25% increase ar 1 stage today but no news on why this increase would be justified. And when you google their share price there is no significant change. What's going on there????

There was a High Court clarification on Friday of how the pubs should be compensated for disruption during Covid 19, I think that may have been responsible. I suppose it allows them to give a final calculation of impact in claims.

Yes. I appreciate your response, but when I Google the share price I am still getting 8.45 on london and other indices.

Nothing on media about a huge price increase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Hope you took that punt on FBD? major re-rating and SP jumped about 20% yesterday

  • Registered Users Posts: 711 ✭✭✭Lad GAGA

Davy's have a price target of just over €13 for FBD. They haven't been allowed pay any dividends for the last couple of years but they had planned to pay a special dividend of c€1 per share when their plans had to be scrapped a coupe of years ago. That should restart this year. They announced on Friday that their expected profit for last year will most likely exceed €100m, way ahead of market forecasts. They mentioned that, in addition to light claims, built into this was very strong investment returns. Their current NAV is 11.37 and that's before last years results are released in March. So all in all even at the current 10.30 they may well be a good investment but DYOR.

I did take a punt! I'm up 23% today!!! If only it was always this easy :)

Can someone tell me if FBD paid the dividend this month. I know there was pressure to cancel it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 711 ✭✭✭Lad GAGA

Yes the €1 dividend was paid in May. I'm not aware of any pressure around paying it, in fact they indicated that they want to maintain this level of dividend going forward if the company's finances can accommodate it.

Shares are taking a hammering and the outlook is poor .I am in lucky position to have sat on my hands .Does any company in the iseq show any value at present .Kingspan stands out to me as it has taking a bit of a tumble down to 54 euro have not heard any press of reason of downturn besides the obvious ,I will be thinking long and hard before pulling the trigger anyway .

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 Green Penguin

Kingspan, Kerry and Flutterall look decent at current price for me, looking at them on a longer term basis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Don't be a fool. Kingspan is an oddball company.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 367 ✭✭Diairist

That sentiment is in the article in The Phoenix magazine this week. When they swing up, it's spectacular but...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Exactly. I based my opinion on that recent Phoenix article and a few others that I have come accross over the years.

The gist of which is that they were in the right sector at the right time.... But even soo, through a mixture of incompetence/arrogance they nearly screwed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭cute geoge

.I am only an amateur ,how have they screwed up .

They are in the right sector at the moment and probably moreso into the future .They seem a good price at moment and for an ordinary Joe seem value.

I bought bol dear ,but doubled up big time when the price tanked ,just my gut feeling .I have a similar hunch with Kingspan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Maybe start by reading that article in the Phoenix. Then maybe have a read of this

What broker can I buy PVR on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Kingspan has been very expensive for years but could justify it with huge growth quarter after quarter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,184 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Fair play to anyone who took the plunge on Kingspan a couple of weeks back.... you should be looking at 15% profit already. (I didn't chance it myself)

I did however take a punt on Ryanair which has also been doing nicely.

Very positive note in the Phoenix this week too. (The gist of which is if they dump O'Leary and get Willie Walsh or someone of his ilk the company could double in value very quickly).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭cute geoge

I did not pull the trigger the last time kingspan went to 50 but they are back there again ,the war will probably drive markets lower again .Is it time to sit on our hands a bit longer ,Bank of ire. are flying doubled on them ,I actually bought them 3 times 2 of which times were a rob and the 3rd time doubled up bigtime at a pittence price .Thinking should I just buy % of kingspan and see how they preform .

    Anything else of value ?

i have a 1000 ryanair which are down 5% from purchase price years ago ,probably enough of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,184 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Yeah, Ryanair, Kingspan, Kenmare Resources all looking very appetising at current prices. But you just don't know where things are going to go.

I can see why the weak English pound would drag down Ryanair & Kingspan... but its a mystery why Kenmare is down 7% today. (Might be to do with going Ex Dividend recently)

Anyway, I picked up a couple Kingspan and a few Kenmare today to add to my existing holdings and bring my BEP down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭cute geoge

  • Registered Users Posts: 711 ✭✭✭Lad GAGA

FBD up to €13 today, with bumper profits of c€70m for last year to be announced in March, way ahead of all forecasts. Looks like another dividend of €1 could be on the cards, Davy has an upgraded price target of €15 per share.

Some nice movements over last few weeks, iseq up 16% ytd now..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,184 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Yeah, ISEQ absolutely flying in 2023. Banks, and the large caps (CRH, Ryanair, Flutter) driving it. But I suppose if you take a longer term view, it's only recovering ground that it's lost in the last 2 years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 Green Penguin

Interesting article by Brian Carey in the Sun Times on Flutter and their likely US listing.

I see the board of directors at IRES reit have gotten it in the neck from activist investor vision capital, they want it sold to a private company, I’m a shareholder and voted against the reelection of all of the directors ( proxy vote), the performance of IRES has been pitiful

    Post edited by tesla_newbie on

Couple of years back all the jargon was to invest in these reit instead of property ,you could get ther same return as property without any of the hassle .Would not mind but when these reit starting purchasing property it was on the floor after the crash .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭tesla_newbie

REIT,s are pitched as a hassle free proxy for the housing market, whatever about how they fare in America ( where they’ve been a feature for fifty years) , they have been largely a failure in most of Europe, the likes of IRES has a good yield but a bond is a much better investment if steady income is someone’s priority , no one is going to invest in IRES paying 4% when many governments are paying over 3%

I invested in the commercial reit Hibernia a few years ago when it was cheap, it got bought out so I realised a gain of 40% plus , I’m hoping that the same happens with IRES

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 367 ✭✭Diairist

I got a couple of REIT's in 2014. When I copped that all of London's financial giants weren't fleeing to Dublin after Brexit I got out. As above, it was only when I sold that I realised how many free shares had been pumped into my holding. Good outcome.

The projected revenue value of the well is above a billion. Ryan has enacted a clause that was bough in post original exploration liciences.

Lansdowne oil and Gas is a partner and already is initiating legal proceedings as it is probably protected by international exploration treaties

There will be freedom of information requests and God know what will come from them.

There is also the fact that Ryan and the Government have put unrealistic financial expectations that no micro exploration company could fullfil. Finally this may seem to be a political ideology ruling by Ryan.

Big drop for BOI today down to bout €8.80. Buying opportunity, I wonder ???

So with the immenient departure of CRH, Smurfit & Flutter how long before Kingspan, Ryanair and Glanbia bail out on the ISEQ (Euronext Dublin)?

In related news big fall in the SP of CRH (leaving ISEQ on 25 Sept) and Smurfit (Market feels it paying too much for West rock).

I sold my ISEQ listed CRH shares recently in anticipation of a sell off due to the switch over, I bought US listed CRH shares instead as I still believe the company can do really well out of increased USA infrastructure spending.... the whole switching of the primary listing to the US might help the US listed SP too in the short term.

    Anyone know much about Mincon??

Big price drop over last few months, P/E at about 9 or so now.

Is it worth a look or going nowhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,184 ✭✭✭littlevillage

I own some shares of Mincon. Yeah the fall has been fairly spectacular, a few large projects have been mothballed etc. I don't know if these setbacks are just bumps in the road or could be a threat to the company’s viability going forward. Hopefully the former as I'm already under water by about 25%. and the ISEQ really cannot keep losing companies.

Things were going great guns for them just a year ago, with mining on the up, US infrastructure projects, renewables (Wind farms etc.) but with small companies a couple of big projects get canned and things can look very bleak very quickly. Fingers crossed here🤞

The SP drop seems extreme its gone from €1.15 in May to €0.55 now..that's over 50%.... whereas profit estimates have only taken a 30% haircut.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 Green Penguin

Thanks for that detail, digging in a bit more into the company, feels like an opportunity.

Yes have experienced that in a number of small companies though over the years that one or two setbacks can really knock them back.

Is the iseq finished now after these big name exits. How does that read internationally seen as ireland supposedly has a very large financial services sector.

Could this be viewed badly internationally given that it focuses more on ireland has a tax haven for huge multinationals rather than as a home for run of the mill publicity quoted stocks
