    This post has been deleted.

try making 2 different online quotes, with Brittany ferries at least, theres at least €45 charge for going over the 1.9. The reason I'm so positive, is because on this years trip, I decided to mount the bikes on the roof instead of on the rear carrier that I had paid for. They deducted the money i had paid for the carrier on the back , and applied a discount to the roofload. I couldnt complain as it was my own mistake.

I paid the 45 on the spot with my credit card and had a new ticket emailed to me within seconds.

Just got an email there now from Irish Ferries with the Provisional Sailing Schedule for 2016 and also saying that it may be Oct before the Schedule is confirmed and the Prices are released.

did they give you a provisional timetable, or just confirm that they wont be announcing until october? I'd love a copy of that if you wouldnt mind as the sailing dates, moreso than the price is going to dictate who i travel with this year.

Maybe they are waiting to see if ROI or NI qualify for the Euros :)

The last round of qualifers are in mid October with playoffs in November. There are 2 matches this weekend/next week so the picture might be a bit clearer come Wednesday next as there are only 2 more qualifiers after that.

Will the tournament in France have much of an effect on the ferry prices does anyone think ? If Ireland qualify.

When is the tournament in France and what cities will the games be held in? Would tickets be easy to come by? I wouldn't mind going to a random match if we were in the general area.

    Thanks

Just want to ask in relation to Eurocamp - what essentials would anyone recommend bringing from Ireland ? What is lacking in the Mobile Homes ?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello, with Eurocamp equipment varies with the model of van you rent. The better models ie more expensive contain everything you need but some wont have a tv. We bring our own with a media player for movies and box sets for the nights where you just want to chill out. As earlier stated linen packs are not provided but can be purchased but will still cost €40/€50 to rent for family of 4.If your kids have those small scooters and you have room, their ideal for nipping around big sites and going for the bread in the morning. We stayed in loire valley twice and its beautiful , Chateau Des Marais with Eurocamp and parc de val de loire with yelloh group both lovely sites with very good pools in both.

Just to note it is worth your while shopping around if you're planning on hiring through Canvas, Eurocamp, Lifestyle etc....

We stayed with Eurocamp in Picardy this year and the mobile was almost €1000 cheaper than with anyone else. Prices for next year don't appear to have gone up by much either.

We had one of the older, more basic mobiles but it was fine and everything we needed was in it. Most do not have a TV but between laptops, tablets and phones we didn't need one.

Extras you can book in advance include linen packs, towels, beach towels, and pack with detergents and cloths in them.

SusanC10 we have gone from Rosslare to Roscoff and stayed in a Eurocamp for a no of years now. Great holiday for the kids etc lots to see and do for the parents as well. The driving is great in France set your sat nav and away you go! The shopping is much the same as here too be honest and the wine is so cheap. We always bring a flat tray for the oven as a family of 6 u need the extra space, all of the places we stayed had just one oven shelf and tray. Also a knife to peel veg etc. Also I usually bring a few essentials like baked beans, a cereal etc that some of the kids like! Also a laptop and dvds for the kids. We have gone on the Oscar Wilde and the food is grand and not badly priced! Sometimes we just go to the café and have a sandwich and other times we have had our dinner in one of the restaurants (The left bank ) Thinking of heading to Cherbourg next yr and driving to Picardy and visiting Paris Euro Disney etc . fdevine u didn't happen to stay at la Croix de Vieux Pont did u? Just curious as to how convenient it is for Paris etc ? Don't want to be too far away and at the same time not too close to Paris either!

We stayed at the apartments in la Croix de Vieux pont around 10 years ago and it was a great holiday.
Drove to Disney a couple of days and drive was around an hour or so. We actually drove and parked our car there another day and got train from there into Paris for a days sight seeing also.
apartments in camp were first class at the time with more mod cons than we even had in our kitchen.

We go there every year, great site. The drive is long from the ferry but worth it imho.

The one thing I would bring is tea towels as there are none provided and a torch which is handy for walking back at night. I also ask for a site away from the pool area and road...It's a bit noisy and can be off putting having people walking past your mobile when your having a meal or drink on the deck. Everything else you could want is there.

It's very handy for Paris, the site has a bus a few times a week or you can get the train.

Any opinions on the best weeks (in July / August) for a French campsite holiday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,944 ✭✭✭Bigus

Ryanair and car hire can be cheaper option and give a bigger range of travel , plus the car is lhd, just can't bring the bikes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 irishgirl78

Irish Ferris won't have their bookings available for next year until next month. Really silly as they had 20% off bookings but must have been a winter sailing. Look at other campsite companies.Eurocamp charge a lot more than others. Yelloh Village are very good for France. Would you consider the ferry from Dublin to Cherbourg?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭SusanC10

We have pretty much decided on Rosslare to Cherbourg with Irish Ferries unless the prices are ridiculous when they come out. We want to drive and bring the bikes and bring home some wine :)

Added to the List are Baking Tray, Torch, Tea Towels and Veg Peeler !

We don't really go for TV / DVDs while on holidays. My Husband will have to bring his work laptop but that does not allow DVDs or personal use etc. Don't really want to have to bring a second laptop. Will bring a few games for the kids.

Ok I am completely new to this.

Just back from Inch and it was perfect but would have loved some actual sun so this is really the option we are thinking about but no idea where to start.

Just wondering where is best place to start looking for accommodation for a new starter? Just to get idea's.

We will be traveling with a 2 kids, they will be 3 & 1 next year.

    Potentially some of our other family could travel(2 adults & 4 kids[1, 3, 5, 7])

I know it is vague but where do I start is probably my question:P

what are you interested in? sun? eating out? cycling? seaside? just as an idea to help you start narrowing it down.

how long a drive do you fancy once you get off the boat?

Well Sun really is a must to be honest. Also would like beach for the kids as they will enjoy it then but thinking about it a sand pit would keep them happy as well....my little girl loves the water so a swimming pool would be just as good :-)

That is main requirements. If we eat in/eat out not a huge concern. I guess most places are self catering with a restaurant onsite if required? maybe I am wrong

We all cycle as well but just for spinning around to get air

The drive is not major, I am not looking to drive 8 hours now but if talking about 5 hours it should be ok....5 hours after getting off boat. But again not sure what is the normal time, so if there is somewhere absolutely brill and it is 8 hours from the ferry I am sure we could push through.....

    Cool,

for the last 3 years we've been to a place called St Jean De Monts, and have stayed with a company called siblu. they have 2 parks in the area, just a little outside the main town. Another very popular park with the Irish is 'Le Clarys plage'

In terms of weather, we've had a mixed bag, St Jean de monts (SJDM) is touted as having a microclimate that makes it a bit warmer than other nearby areas, in reality, I've found this to be somewhat of a mixed bag. We usually travel the first 2 weeks of august or the last 2 weeks of July and the record is as follows.

2013 - a melter, 28 to 30 degree heat for two weeks, it was great
2014 - heavy rainshowers a few times a day, a disaster, spent a fortune entertaining the kids - a then 3 year old and 1 year old.
2015 - generally sunny, temps about low 20's it rained on two days.

the drive is about 4.5 hours from the ferry docking in roscoff.

its a big tourist town so there is no shortage of places to eat and the cycle routes there are almost neverending. La Rochelle is about 1.5 hours further south.

For next year, i want guaranteed fine weather, so I'm heading to Camping la sirine near perpignan - its a 12 hour drive so we're breaking it up with an overnight in la rochelle.

Have to echo SD4E's comments above. If starting again I'd be very happy to use SJDM as our base. It's a very easy location to get to from Roscoff/Cherbourg and there is plenty to do including lot's of cycle lanes and no end of good beaches.

I too have stayed in the Siblu camps there for the last three years (and had the pleasure of bumping into SD4E for a few minutes this year as our holidays overlapped by a few days) and they are a wonderful company to deal with.

With younger kids however there may be a benefit to being able to walk to the beach rather than cycle or have to hop in a car as you would in the Siblu sites in SJDM. There is a site called Sol A Go Go whish is small but right on the beach and gets good reviews. http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g1080873-d1889139-Reviews-Sol_a_Gogo-Saint_Hilaire_de_Riez_Vendee_Pays_de_la_Loire.html It's just outside SKDM but has it's own direct access to the beach and also has a pool etc. It could be ideal for younger kids who wouldn't benefit and might even be a bit intimidated by a busier site with lot's of older kids whizzing around. Eurocamp should be able to help you - http://www.eurocamp.ie/campsites/vendee/vn016-sol-a-gogo/ataglance.html I've never dealt with them myself but lot's of others have had good experiences with them.

My kids are 14 and 10 now but 6 years ago we used to go to another Siblu site further south in La Palmyre called Bonne Anse Plage and the back entrance of the site was right on a dedicated cycle path which ran along the coast. Perfect for getting them out in a safe environment and we could cycle 10km either way to beaches and towns without encountering any cars.

Now they are older we don't need that level of comfort but at the time we valued the peace of mind a lot.

Next year just for a change of scenery and we're heading to La Reserve which will be about a 9 hour journey (including 2 pit stops for food) from Cherbourg http://www.siblu.ie/france/aquitaine/la_reserve.php.

Just wondering if anyone has ever taken the Dublin - Cherbourg ferry before?

At the time i was booking with Eurocamp they didn't have the schedule for that route.

My logic here is that if they sail on the same days in 2016 as in 2015 (out on sat back on a sunday) i might amend my booking back 2 days and take advantage of an extra 2 nights on site without taking any more days off work!

Our little one is only 2 so at the moment she sits on the back of the bike with my husband and our little boy is only 8 weeks so he hasn't gone too far :P

My husbands plan was to get a 2 seater bike trailer for kids so if cycling far would put them into that....might sound madness but he came up with it:D

Hi. We're a fortnight back from Domaine Des Ormes in Brittany. The main reason we chose this place this year was that we had a young baby (4 months) with us as well as a 6 & 9 year old so we wanted to keep the drive short. It was about 2 hours 15 mins which was ideal. We stayed with Eurocamp but you have many options such as booking direct, looking for private owners who rent out as well as Eurocamp, Canvas, Kelair (Campotel), Lifestyle holidays and more so play them off against each other on price. In my experience Lifestyle generally cheaper but no kids clubs. If you want to send the kids to kids clubs Eurocamp and Canvas are superb.
Domaine des Ormes was a super site with lots of activities, Pony/horse riding, climbing walls, treetop adventure, archery, zipwire to name but a few, as well as a great outdoor pool with slides, indoor pool with slides and other outdoor slides and also a wave pool! As your kids are quite young though it may be one for a few years time. Also as it's so close the weather can be iffy, we were there for 9 days in August, the first and last days were bad but every other day was fine (quite cloudy) or roasting but even the cloudy days were warm enough to go in the outdoor pools.
The previous 2 years we went to La Croix Du Vieux Pont, a longer drive of about 5 hours although the second year took us almost 7 as we got hopelessly lost in Rouen! It's quite Northerly but only an hour and a half outside Paris so great for Disneyland, we drove there for 2 days from the site on both of our visits. The site wouldn't have as much as Domaine Des Ormes but great pools and kids clubs. If you need anymore info let me know!

You just read my mind, I found the following on Eurocamp and sounds perfect: http://www.eurocamp.ie/about-us/our-kids-clubs/mini-fun-station

First place listed is Domaine Des Ormes.....I had took it before the kids clubs would be for 4 & over. The ability to drop them off for a few hours a couple of days would be great :P

Need to look over list now

you can hire those trailers pretty handily in most of the camps, so dont be worried on that front,

with the kids camps, we've found in the past that the ones for kids under 5 insist on you being present while the activities are going on . 5 years and older, you drop them off and collect them after.

Thanks everyone for the info.....I hope this is my last question

It in regards to the Tesco Booster vouchers.

Just for the ferry/accommodation. I have 15 euro in vouchers just came in post now, should I wait till the next bundle of vouchers come in as well and put them all together to get a code? I see on the website you can only use one code per booking, so do people build up there vouchers over the year and then just add them all in at once on the tesco boost website?

Can I put deposit now with IF/Stena and then use voucher closer to departure so I can build them up?

Is it possible to do something similar with Eurocamp/siblu which are also listed?

I do all my shopping in tesco and I never use the boost but this looks great.....

    Hi guys,
I removed the provisional timetable posts yesterday as they are only provisional and were never intended for publication until finalised. Please do not re-post them.
Irish Ferries also have advised us:
Irish Ferries are in the final stages of producing their timetable for their French routes for 2016, this will be completed within the next two weeks.

For the very latest information, please check their Website. Timetables will be available at http://www.irishferries.com/uk-en/routes/rosslare-cherbourg/

    Thanks folks :)

    Hi Redgirl

I'm new to using the Tesco clubcard points too but As far as I know from reading on boards and the advice of others you can use the tesco boost vouchers to pay towards the price of your ferry - you need to phone and tell them you plan to use the tesco vouchers - pay your deposit however you want and they add €20 admin fee each way and then you can send in your boost vouchers as you have them and then pay what ever balance is left before the final payment date ? You can send in the vouchers as you have them or so I've been told ?

I'm saving my clubcard points too hoping to pay for some of the ferry, we also applied for the tesco credit card which gives you points while shopping in other stores to try and get more points.

Still waiting for IF to release 2016 prices so we can use tesco vouchers to book them to go over and then use Stena 25% off from ploughing championships for return journey as I guess we should make best savings this way ??

If I'm incorrect with regards to the boost vouchers please let us know

Any advantage of traveling with Brittany apart from them leaving from Cork? They seem a good bit more expensive compared to Stena....Boat better or something?

  • Registered Users Posts: 335 ✭✭Redderneck

Only reason we've gone so often with them rather than IF is because Cork's much handier for us for the Irish driving leg. Boat is bigger and better (subjective I guess), but tbh, we tend to get the heads down early so we can be ready to hit the road fresh the next day, so that side of things is a bit irrelevant for us. We generally have a big family feed before we board. Food onboard is a rip, especially for larger families.

For all the talk about the holiday beginning once you get onboard - yeah; nah. That's what they want you to buy into, because that's when you start spending. I'd sooner wait until we've hit France thanks very much.

Each to their own. Some genuinely prefer to kick back and stand down the 24 hour security guard on their wallets as soon as they board. Whatever has you smiling.

Any advantage of traveling with Brittany apart from them leaving from Cork? They seem a good bit more expensive compared to Stena....Boat better or something?
Just to share my experiences on all 3 ferries, Stena, IF and BF. We've 3 small children. Stena seems to be cheapest but my biggest peave is the way people just sleep anywhere, doorways, the bar, hallways etc. You have to queue once onboard to get your boarding pass. The day we were on, they ran out of food, not even a bag of peanuts to be had. We usually take turns putting the children to bed and the other goes to the bar to read a book or watch TV. Unfortunately at this stage all of the TVs have been switched off by the people sleeping under them. Also, the sailing get in later in the afternoon so you have all to entertain the children. I tend not to go with them due to all this but i would consider if price was right and i could get a cabin.

Brittany ferries get in nice and early in Roscoff so you can take your time driving to your destination and stop off a few times. Its a very fast crossing and you have to get up at 5am for a 6am berthing (Irish time). Seems to be only 1 TV on board but it does seem like a more upscale boat than the others. There are a lot of places and floors for children to get lost or hide!.

IF (at the moment) is the best for me, 3 bars and restaurants, Sky sports in piano bar (That you can watch and listen) and everything on one floor so you know if your child runs off, they wont go far. The entertainment was good on board for them also. Most suitable arrival and departure times for us.

I'm sure its different for a lot of people but IF is happy compromise for us at this stage with 3 small children.

I just checked this to compare with last year. I paid €1153 last year for a 3 bed + 1 bath Espace w/deck in August (9 nights) in Domaine Des Ormes when booked in June the same year . The same dates next year including this 'discount' are €1774!

Just a question on Eurocamp & Aircon. On the website it says for example 2 Bed 2 Bath Vista + Deck + AC and gives a price. Then if you click on the accommodation description it says that there may be an additional charge for AC. So does the price shown include the aircon or is the an extra charge at the campsite ?

Great deals out there, I've been to France the last few years, each time on the Oscar Wilde. I've always booked the accommodation first then the ferry when the schedule is published.
The booking agent I've used has had no problems amending the accommodation by a day to allow for the crossing, and this year this worked out to be a cheaper option as they had a free night offer.Be aware though that if you arrive into France on the weekends, no large supermarkets open after 12pm on a Sunday so be sure to stock up beforehand on groceries, as the smaller local shops are a lot more expensive.
