I was wondering why I couldn't find a single clip of Joanne McNally's standup.
Even if she appears on a tv show, they never show her standup.

Then I found this... Jesus, it's bad.

She's got the voice of a math's teacher.

Which Irish comedians do you find funny?

Genuinely never heard of her but the accent is all over the place, slips into posh and skanger Dublin, she can't hold whichever one is the fake one.

    Terrible
    Not funny
    Horrible accent
    notions

    Jason Byrne
    Alison Spittle
    Maeve Higgins
    Des Bishop
    Pat Shortt
    Andrew Maxwell
    Ed Byrne
    Dara O Briain
    PJ Gallagher
    Other

I wouldn't pay to see any of these. Pat Shortt had his time and was funny but never really evolved past his one trick.
As for the rest - they all belong on Dave.

Quoting you both because I believe you're the same person.

Irish comedians? Very few. None that spring to mind tbh.

I find the whole 'ha, I'm Irish... tayto crisps, drunk, hungover, leaving on the immersion'... etc etc boring. It's all Rinse and repeat.
Comedy I like tends to tackle all the regular 'human' stuff.
Comics I like aren't Irish, tbh. I like Taylor Tomlinson. I think Daniel Sloss can be funny. Dave Chappelle I like. Kathleen Madigan is really good too.

I think Irish comedians need to do better frankly.

My take, I think one follows the other around quite pathetically. One tries too hard to entertain and the other, for some bizarre reason tries to impress a username on a forum, jumping at any opportunity to beat the misogyny drum (see above) as flash sees himself as some knight in shining armour at times that suits him. It's car crash stuff seeing one post some pile of muck and a minute later has his understudy in to "validate his thoughts" on the dump taking process and whatever else current affairs pro FG non-issue he sees vital to comment on.

    the 'dry your eyes mate'

'mate' i genuinely feel sorry for you, you are on this forum 24/7, self-declare yourself as a boards 'legend' whatever that is. yet spend a heap of your time saying people get too upset on this and spend too much time on it. look at your post count...pathetic.

That’s it, J. That lad has been “following” me around, from thread to thread, like a beggar.

Been “awol” the last while so was hoping he’d just stay over in the “Current Affairs” forum but must be getting bored.

These threads about “comedy” always tend to attract men who are to comedy what Hitler was to the Jews and the more “po faced” the commentator, the less funny they are.

seeing you on every single thread i follow isn't "following you around". it means you are like the annoying lad in any setting who's there every time you walk in talking a load of bollocks, except I don't know if this same lad would have such a misunderstanding of how, when and such an obsession with inverted quotation marks.

Relatively cheap to produce. That and it plays into RTE's OBSESSION with nostalgia.
Ya know, when most people only had the 2 channels. And RTE were raking in cash.

I avoid it like the plague... the absolute drekk RTE produce is insulting.

    Andrew maxwell is awful irritating

Anyone remember that very short lived RTE chat show type thing he had circa 2007ish? The one that featured breakdancers in the studio with footage of him doing stand up awkwardly superimposed over them, plus some woman playing the ukelele who was on every single week.

That sounded vaguely familiar... I think I remember the ads for it, but that was it.

Had quick search, and turns out it was called Andrew Maxwell's Smoke and Mirrors.

That's it, I was trying to remember the name. It was an interesting concept, watched it for for a few episodes in the hope it might improve but lost interest. I wouldn't say it was terrible but it didn't gel. The ukele woman got on my nerves, when she was on the first episode I thought she was a one off but next week there she was again .

Well if Andrew Maxwell was the star of the show it definitely wasn't worth watching. It always amazes me how someone as unfunny as him manages to forge a career in the UK and they can barely elicit a giggle here in Ireland.

2 ratings on IMDB. One giving it 1/10 and the other 10/10 from Alexander Aze with a grand total 1 review in 6 years with an account opening as soon as the show was released.

Shocking stuff. Jason Byrne has just rocketed up to neck and neck with Alison Spittle for me.

'Alexander' made an ace contribution, he wasn't a producer of the show masquerading as a casual viewer. Unfortunately I watched that turgid cack and now need to administer bleach on the eyes. Byrne should find an appropriate vehicle for his talents, there must be an idle chipper van somewhere.

Yeah,it's why I voted for Byrne from the outset. He's consistently failed as a comedian.

Then proceeds to blame others for his failings. The BBC show was 'buried' according to him, not fully developed etc.

    He was an ungrateful douche.

I saw a tweet from Alison Spittle a few weeks back and I was instantly reminded of this thread. I think it was in relation to Dominic Cummings and his little trip but there was an obvious joke to be made and people were flogging it all day, Alison comes out at 10:10pm with the exact same joke. Talk about a day late and a dollar short.

I've seen Jason Byrne steal material from the likes of the Muppets, of all people.
(THE MUPPETS ARE REAL-DON'T AT ME! (joking, in case that's lost on people))

But there's a lot of comics stealing material rn. There was many on the Ray D'Arcy 'stand-up comedy' special thing he did before Xmas who were using stolen material.

I think one of those 'comediennes' works for Joe.ie, but her entire twitter account is stolen jokes and stolen material. (The hyphens around 'comedienne' are there because she clearly wasn't a comedienne)

Is there less of a stigma in Ireland with comedians stealing jokes than say the states? Dennis Leary, Amy Schumer and Carlos Mencia (rightly) got a lot of stick for stealing other comedians material but Brendan O Carroll does it wholesale with no consequences and he's not the only one.

O'Carroll just takes them straight out of the joke books you see at Xmas on the shelves.

My 14 month old is funnier than her nevermind Cummings. The "eye test" is one of the most under appreciated jokes in ages.

Brendan Grace did it all the time as well. Stealing from the likes of Rodney Dangerfield, or the two Ronnies.
He got away with it in the time of 'the one channel' (my only explanation, I wasn't alive then) but it became more egregious and annoying as time went on. O'Carroll did it too, with added homophobia.

Al Porter (before he got 'handsy') was notorious for stealing material either from other comics, or your average joke book.
Then recycling your average 'Carry on' routine.

Mencia was hounded out of showbiz. Schumer they keep putting in the spotlight, despite stealing material being one of her... lesser crimes. She'll never get another movie, maybe supporting parts, but not a lead.

The weird thing is, Dennis Leary's career fizzled out rather quickly (his standup career that is). Greg Giraldo happily ripped the piddle out of him on a Colin Quinn show. It's priceless.

Well, we don’t usually get comedians to debate political aides. It’s not really comparing like with like, they have different audiences and different goals.

I’m not a fan of Spittle but lots of people are.

I’ve no interest in Mrs Brown’s Boys but my dad thinks it’s hilarious.

I have an aunt who says she married her husband because of how much he makes her laugh. I think he’s one of the most boring humans I’ve ever met.

No one person can define someone else as unfunny. It’s so subjective. It’s grand to say “I find that person about as funny as a wart” but it’d be good if people were open to the idea that their opinion isn’t the only opinion.

Spittle's a media 'darling' so to speak. She ticks all the boxes-mental health? Check. Feminist? Check. Always on Social Media? Check.
She's not funny tho. It's just RTE don't understand social media. At best, she's 'mildly amusing friend' but that's it.

The difference in the examples you've given is that one is making money on their supposed 'jokes' (O'Carroll and Spittle) and another person is just 'that funny person'.
The question I tend to ask myself is 'Would I pay to see this person in a show? Would I pay to see their special on netflix/ Amazon? Bare minimum pricing included'. If my answer is 'no', then I can't see them as entertaining.

(There's some genuinely talented comedians in the US who tackle dark subjects such as Mental illness in their material. And yet their shows are genuinely funny.)

You managed to completely miss my point there. I get that you don’t think she’s funny. As it happens, I don’t think she’s funny either.

But there are lots of people who do.

Some people like gentle humour, others like it in your face. Some like it sharp while others love the stuff that’s a bit kitsch. Some love dirty, bawdy humour and others love a family friendly comic who can be funny while keeping it clean.

You’re as entitled to your opinion as anyone else, but that doesn’t make you necessarily right.

But where are these people? I totally understand your point about comedy being subjective. The point being made is that Spittles fans genuinely don’t seem to exist, she is a darling of RTÉ only it seems and gets treated like some massive talent with money thrown in her direction for various projects which are dire. Michael McIntyre is quite divisive and suits what you are saying, I find his material to be atrocious but it’s visibly there for you to see that he has a huge fan base, tens of thousands at his shows, pulled in £21 miilion from a tour. Brendan O Carroll another example. But Spittle? Is there really any large cohort of a fan base? I don’t think so. And if there is any, it is very small and doesn’t deserve all the attention she gets from our national broadcaster, but no surprise there either.

When have you ever heard anyone talking about her let alone talking about her in a positive light. She’s just a bad fart which just keeps lingering around.

Think it goes a bit beyond that in here, K. Not finding her “funny” is one thing but gleeful attacking her politics, “wokeness” and her appearance is another.

You’ve got lads slobbering over the chance to put the “boot” into her. Bleating about her “terrible” tv show they never watched, or if they did they never gave a chance to.

To be honest, her show, ‘Nowhere Fast’ was, actually, decent enough. Better than a lot of the RTÉ comedy “shows” that have been on over the last while.

The level of, creepy, hatred on here being directed toward Ms. Spittle is both unnecessary and worrying.

Hmmm, I think what you’re suffering from here is confirmation bias. You’re seeking out evidence that backs up your opinion without looking at evidence to the contrary.

Tens of thousands of social media followers, a recent Covid deal with the BBC for the watch-along thing she created, a show in Vicar Street last year. People are willing to pay to see her.

attacking her politics, “wokeness” and her appearance is another.

Who has attacked her appearance? Can you point out a few examples, or even just 1 please?

I did look up evidence, but my main source of evidence is experience, just like your example of your dad and Mrs Browns Boys. I have literally never heard or met anyone speak of her let alone speak of her fondly.

I had a look at her twitter before posting the other post, she has 22.5k followers. That’s hardly a large following for somebody who is continuously in your face on tv and radio. And she’s flat out on it, doing what she does best, talking absolute muck.

A show in Vicar street with a capacity of 1000. Is that it? That’s a question by the way, not a criticism.

I don’t know what the last one is and can’t find anything is on it. But you’d be hard pushed not to find a ‘celebrity’ that didn’t get out of their box and jump on the Covid train of free self serving publicity so it’s not the greatest example.

There's no Covid deal-it's just something her and her friends have done on twitter. You don't need to pay to see it-it's free. British tv already have Gogglebox, which accomplishes the same thing.

Social media followers can be bought. We've seen that. Having a mass audience on social media doesn't equal a mass audience in any other venture. There are people on social media with followings larger than Spittle who are setting up gofundme's to try and pay their rent.

Nowhere Fast didn't get renewed for a second season... it's not just people on boards who didn't like her. The show didn't sell, plain and simple. Even Amy Huberman's show sold to the UK, and I wasn't a fan of that, but I'll give her credit.

It's happened to others prior to her too-youtubers, who accumulated large followings on youtube, went to tv but died on their butts (FRED aka Lukas Cruikshank for example, ijustine for another example. Not that they care, they live in penthouses-early youtube successes).

The level of, creepy hatred, on here, being directed toward Ms. Spittle is both unnecessary and worrying.

Will you ever “pipe down” and go run after Johnny Flash and find your next knight in shining armour crusade for women on some other thread. It has absolutely nothing to do with what’s being discussed here at the moment.
