listened to the first half of the podcast at work but had to turn it off. content was grand, but sounded like some people were miles away from the microphone which wasn't great when gerry thornley is shouting into it at the same time.

    better sound production please!!!

I agree, but the only one I couldn't hear properly was Shane Horgan.

On another topic, Richard Sadlier's comments on Frank were class. You could hear how much he meant it! Nice little segment!

Decent return, though far too much egg chasing for my liking. Dragged massively in that section.

The rugby journo who they interviewed had a really annoying voice too.Ended up just skipping until the rugby talk was finished.

Listened to the first 5 minutes this morning and had to turn it off because of work but looking forward to listening tonight :) The Frank Sadlier bit was great!

I listened and enjoyed. It was like a normal show really, although the lack of any live interaction with listeners was a downer (maybe they could look at live streaming with a chat room or similar?).

I did quite like the Frank Sadlier tribute, that was funny, and I liked how they are able to attract good guests (fair enough there is the Irish Times connection for Thornley and family relationship with Shane Horgan).

Wonder what the long term plan is...

It's cup final weekend for both the Amlin and Heineken Cups, and the two finalist are now known for the Rabo final. So it's basically the end of the leagues and cups and a new Ireland manager was just appointed, so what else would people expect ?

Horses for courses, I had no interest in the soccer talk, apart from Richie Saddler who I find entertaining anyway. Come football and hurling championship season I'll have little interest then, but I won't complain they're talking too much about either sports as what would one expect at that time of year.

This is exactly it. The show caters for all sports fans in Ireland. I wish people would cop on and just accept they have to cover them all. I have little interest in Tabloid soccer journalism. Turn on sky sports zombie news if ye want that. I like soccer, I'm a fan but Jesus it's over saturated. Who gives a **** who John Terry or Ryan Giggs is nobbing really?

As a first show it was very good, hopefully they will be able to keep it up and maybe get a couple of extra podcasts in each week. A live stream during big Ireland games would be great. No ads, news breaks etc is very nice...

That's clearly why they went long on the rugger - cheap/free pundits, at least while they get the thing off the ground.

Enjoyed the show as well and I would be reasonably optimistic for the future. Who knows how new media will go and/or how it will be monetised in the short to medium term.

I will say this - I listened to the podcast last night from 7pm and had absolutely no interest in tuning to "new" OTB afterwards.

Yeah, the sound quality was a bit poor in parts, particularly for Thornley whose levels seemed to shoot up and down a lot. Hopefully that's something they can work on.

I would also agree that maybe the rugby section lasted a bit long, but I suppose to be fair there was a lot to discuss, with three finals and a new Irish manager, and there wasn't exactly that much breaking GAA news this week compared to Fergie retiring and Mancini being sacked.

Oh, OP updated too with links and stuff. If I've forgotten anything let me know.

I enjoyed it too - hopefully they'll sort the sound issue for the next time. What it just reinforced though is how much I miss the original show :(

Dunno why people are giving out about the rugby. There's only 5 massive stories ATM with Joe/Ireland, Amlin, Heineken and Rabo finals and the Lions tour. Probably left out more there too. If anything they kept it short.

Liked it a lot. Give them a few shows and the glitches will be sorted, which is the norm for all podcasts. Great to hear Sadlier again.

Hoping at some stage Murph's Country Pages returns.

    I'm happy.

Not half the pod dedicated to it. It's a sports show and they only covered rugby and soccer, they could have mixed it up a bit more imo.

I'm perfectly copped on thanks very much

So much so that I know that rugby and soccer aren't the only things happening so they didn't "cover them all".

The defensiveness should anyone post a criticism of the lads is ridiculous. It's not perfect and people will have gripes, deal with it.

I griped myself about the quality of Shane Horgans phone line. I griped myself at the lack of GAA coverage. I made a universal comment about people giving out when they cover one sport "excessively" in their eyes.

I stand by the comment, it's perfectly reasonable to tell people who (for example) "fyp" change your comment in a quote box to the opposite of what I said to cop on. I'll tell you again though, with your very clever roll eyes, cop on. I don't know why you quoted "cover them all"

They traditionally do cover them all. Very well in my opinion. But you have fools cribbing like children, "no not GAA, no more horse racing, stop covering cycling etc

I'll say it again to these people and not you who seemed to think I was talking to you only. Cop on to yourself

Nothing to do with defensiveness from anyone, just simply pointing out the facts of what the major sports stories are in the country at the moment.

Seeing as the podcast was only an hour long, either they'd have to shorten the features and cram more in. Or sacrifice things. The beauty of the radio show was that they had plenty of time to discuss topics in more depth because they had the luxury of so much time.

Regarding the GAA and indeed other sports, they're in the position of having lost a lot of their regular pundits. Most if not all of the GAA pundits stayed with the radio show, Donn McLean is still giving out tips on Newstalk etc. So if this is to be a regular thing podcast or they take up residence on another station they're going to be starting from scratch in some regards.

Yeah, keep your head down and say nothing; thats the Irish way.

'So Dessie, any craic at the weekend?'

    *pukes on radio*

You had a radio show on a national radio station and you had a fit because they wouldn't give your specialist show a half an hour of one of the station's biggest money-makers, the general audience drive-time show.

I know you and plenty of people here like the lads, and they're obviously good at what they do, but they are taking a significant pay-cut to do essentially the same job through a podcast on the website of a dying newspaper.

Like I said - they threw themselves under the bus and anyone that's looking at this without rose-tinted glasses can see that. Don't blame the hand the feeds when you're the one who bit it off.

It seems they've messed up the iTunes feed to boot, four days later and not a sign of the proper podcast on it and from the synopsis it sounds like they have no intention of making it easy for people to download the bloody thing through the most popular podcast directory on the internet.

The Irish Times seem to be trying to use the podcast as a click-through driver to get hits for the rest of the website. That the IT haven't a clue about how to deal with new media shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. People want podcasts on the go and having the download file - unadvertised, you have to right click and 'save as' to get the mp3 file - wedged deep into your rss feed is simply not good enough. You're adding hurdles between the consumer and the content.

One last bomb to throw out there - one hour is a laughably short time limit to place on a weekly general sports show, let alone for one whose fans are accustomed to 14 hours a week of non-live coverage. They need to step it up and be producing at least two solid hours a show or it's just going to be a pale imitation of what went before.

Doomed to failure is springs to mind, especially if the Irish Times and the hosts don't get their act together very, very fast because they will be quickly forgotten about when the fanfare dies down.

It is on iTunes since Tuesday afternoon. There are two second captains accounts. Second captains @ Irish times has the proper podcast.

I doubt getting the sack from Newstalk was in their plans.

I listened to the podcast on my phone using Soundcloud. So it's out there in different formats.

The iTunes feed works perfectly. You're subscribed to the wrong one. Though I would hope they'll amalgamate the two feeds just for convenience.

Of course the IT want it to drive traffic to their site. Surely that's the entire point of the podcast? They're not hosting it out of the goodness of their hearts. Only thing missing is a direct download link on the site, which seems to be a limitation of Soundcloud's webplayer.

Anyway, just took a look on the IT site there, almost 21,000 plays since Tuesday. I wonder if that takes into account the iTunes downloads...

    a dying newspaper.

The national radio station in question is hardly a rip-roaring success either, over 10 years on air and it still hasn't made a profit. If the hand that feeds wasn't feeding me very well I'd be inclined to bite. Sean Moncrieff has made it clear on a number of occasions that those working on his show are poorly paid. I think it's save to assume that, with possible exception of Mcdevitt, the same applies Ken, Murph...etc.

So, it's not as if they have walk out on these really well paid jobs. They are all in their 30's now, two have recently got married, one has had a kid - they are at a different stage of their lives now. They had taken the show as far it could go, it was time for a change.

I doubt the team would have of stayed together indefinitely at Newstalk. Some of them would have moved on to other things eventually, the fact that they all handed in their notice together last January still suggests that they had got another offer. I don't doubt the newspaper reports that they had meetings with RTE, maybe those meetings didn't lead to anything or maybe they did - who knows? As it is, more people have listened to the SecondCaptins@IrishTimes soundcloud than tune into 2fm's "Game on" on a weekly basis. It is frequently stated on here that RTE couldn't afford to hire five people to make a radio show which only has a potential audience of 40,000-50,000 - well, it's currently paying four people to make a sports show with an audience of only 20,000.

Hmm, it's a real mess then because the links brought me to the one with two clips and there was no directory page on iTunes for the creator of the Second Captains feed; in other words the two feed weren't even made using the same account.

Maybe I should be clearer - podcasts as click-through generators is not a viable strategy. Podcasts aren't even as useful for that as three minute videos because the majority of people will download the file from a feed, at least if that's a clear option. Anyone that uses the Soundcloud option isn't staring at IT.com for 1 hour 16 minutes, it's just playing in the background and the number that used it to listen to first episode will decrease because the people who really care enough to keep listening will figure out how to get a download, something that is infinitely more useful in daily life than a stream.

The Times will get a few thousand cheap hits per episode but the value to the site as a whole will be negligible. People are coming for a podcast, not to read text. There isn't going to be huge crossover. The vast majority of professional websites' podcasts are hosted by people already on staff, something that is obviously not the case here. IT are paying five people (at least) money to produce the show. Even a small amount will eat into any ad revenue they'll earn from the extra hits. On top of that ad revenue is so miniscule that you need thousands upon thousands upon thousands of hits to make a ripple in the balance books. They'll probably preserve for a while because it's going to be a prestige production for the website but this ain't This American Life we're talking about.

It's a losing tact, particularly when they can't even sort their feeds out.

Like I said, this is nothing personal against the five lads who were actually quite good at what they did. The sad part is some of their best stuff was covering games live from the sidelines but that's out the window with this arrangement. As it stands the Off the Ball that continued in their absence is an infinitely better source for general sports.

Will it be 15:00 on Tuesday the second podcast is released? I'm looking forward to seeing what GAA guests they have on. Murphs Country pages may also make a return this week I'd say. Challenge Murph will def be missed though.
