Tom Watson was referring to physical photographs, not downloaded images. As fryup says, downloading wasn't around in the early 70s.

I'm not sure this refers to an aide to a dead PM either. This Peter Righton character was convicted in 1992 suggesting the aide worked at Downing St during Major or Thatchers rule.

Also Sky News reporting that the Met are drawing up an 'arrest plan'. Could be interesting to see who gets their collars felt in the coming weeks.

No, and it wasn't about the internet at all.

“One of its members boasts of a link to a senior aide of a former Prime Minister, who says he could smuggle indecent images of children from abroad."

Still points to a certain yacht-owning ex-pm, I think. (edit:, or not, now I've finished reading that article)

how can a man go for so long to be able to molest over 300 children!? I feel absolutely sick reading some of the stories about him! If only he was still alive to be tortured! I hope he rots in hell!

    More from Tom Watson.

I cannot give much more detail until the police have been given more time to investigate whether evidence still exists from the mid-nineties, but here is what I can say.

Last week I was contacted by a former child protection specialist who for some years, had been concerned that a wider investigation regarding the activities of convicted paedophile, Peter Righton was not fully investigated.

He contacted me because he knew I had spoken out in the Murdoch scandal. Over the years, he had lost faith in the ability of politicians to get to the truth. The last time he contacted an MP was in 1994. The MP promised to follow up the case but nothing came of it.

The central allegation was that a large body of material seized in the raid on Righton’s home had not been fully investigated. Though Righton was the subject of a BBC profile in 1994 [I think this is the date] “The Secret Life of a Paedophile”, little had been done to follow up the leads from the case. A specialist unit in Scotland Yard had the material which supplemented a wider investigation into organised paedophile rings in children’s homes.

Over the last few days I have spoken to two other child protection specialists who share the concern of the gentleman who contacted me.

Within the material seized at Righton’s home were letters from known and convicted paedophiles. The contact, who has seen the letters, claimed that one paedophile in particular was of great concern. He said that the paedophile, who worked with children, boasted of a key aide to a former PM who could help get hold of indecent images of children. I am not naming the person for obvious reasons but for clarity it is not former MP, Peter Morrison. This afternoon my office has been bombarded with calls regarding Morrison, I think because he was named by Edwina Currie at the weekend as having inappropriate sexual relations with teenage boys.

I’ll say more when I can but this may not be for some time.

I should say that like with the hacking scandal, a number of people have contacted me this afternoon offering more information regarding the case. I am happy to talk to anyone who can help me – particularly those who came into contact with Righton and his contacts when they were young. I can understand how powerless they must have felt at the time – Righton’s net was cast wide.

One person also contacted me to suggest that the Met held a vast quantity of material suggesting Jimmy Savile was a predatory paedophile. I do not know whether this is true but I do know the source and she has been 100% accurate in the past.

One final thing I should say – I made the decision to ask a question of the PM late this morning and had not had time to write to the Met before speaking out. I have no doubt the Met will take this seriously and am sorry I didn’t have time to forewarn the commissioner of my intention to raise the matter.

I have written to him this afternoon with more details regarding the case. This will obviously remain confidential.

You're right. They should just go ahead and start naming people, just to sate your thirst for scandal and gossip.

Fuck any so-called "legal investigation", eh?

the y cannot name the person when there is an investigation. Have to wait till he is charged i think

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23 hilda781

Firstly, I am not thirsty for scandal and gossip. I never buy tabloids. Gutterpress is a name for a reason.
Secondly, why report at all until the thing has been investigated and then give the info. I get your view, innocent til proven guilty. You are right but I think the media really should wait for the whole story and after the person has been charged with the offence before they write their articles tempting people with scandal creating headlines.

A guessing game is what it becomes. And that is unfair to the alleged victim, the alleged offender and the readers.

It also leads to presumptions by the public and everyone jumping to their own conclusions before anything has even gone to court. Stops people from getting a fair trial.

That all said, nothing will change.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23 hilda781

I remember one case. The murder of Joanna Yeates at christmas time. It happened in the U.K. Her landlord was given a terrible name in the media. He was completely innocent. I do know the dangers of divulging names. I personally find it frustrating to read the article and be none the wiser. I say wait til he/she is charged at least and then name and shame. (omho).

Assuming it is genuine journalism, naming someone in the media could lead to no prosecution going ahead due to the accused's claim to being denied a fair trial being recognised by the judicial system.

He was talking in reference to the biggest scandal in the BBC's history whereupon those who hide or have hidden behind large corporate institutions ( such as Saville did for decades ) to carry out abuse unchecked ,will be investigated .

I realise that. I'm saying there's a huge difference between "we'll investigate" and actually doing the investigations.

I think there is a bigger story out there, whether it will ever see the light of day is the question.

This is obviously my opinion but I think Cameron's reaction when Tom Watson raised the 'powerful paedophile ring' with links to No 10 said a lot. He was gobsmacked - I don't think he ever expected this to be raised in the Commons. He clearly knew what the case was about and the year (1992) but didn't know which Prime Minister.

When Cameron spoke about Savile he tried to push all the focus onto the BBC. Clearly his mate Rupert wants the BBC destroyed and if the focus stays on the Beeb then the wider story may be ignored but Cameron fails to mention the NHS where Savile was given a director role to Stoke Mandeville hospital together with living quarters or the prison service where he was given open house to Broadmoor institution and it's inmates and obviously the Conservative Party which ensured Savile was appointed to these positions.

He doesn't mention Haut de Garonne in Jersey where Savile is alleged to have obtained young boys and provided them to influential men who moored their yachts for long enough to pick these boys up.

If a small proportion of the rumours are to be believed there is a lot to come out yet but will it ever be allowed out? Is it too dangerous for some very powerful men and women?

Scallywag magazine printed some of the current allegations in the early 90s but then John Major sued it and drove it out of existence because of a story it printed about him having an affair with a caterer. Little was known of his ongoing affair with Edwina (who appointed Savile to Stoke Mandeville) at the time but was there a wider motive for John to drive Scallywag out of existence? The documentation on the paedophile allegations of the Scallywag was rumoured to have fallen into the hands of a Tory MP through a housing deal and hasn't been seen since.

There also seems to be little focus on Savile's interaction with young boys as well as young girls. This surely would have nothing to do with the rumour that he provisioned young boys for unnamed others while the young girls were mainly for his own benefit.

Will they reopen the investigation of the Kincora affair in Belfast and release the sections of the public inquiry which were withheld or the North Wales investigation where an unnamed 'Lord' was not investigated despite being named by some of the victims?

Tom Watson English MP brought up the issue of a monster ring in the British house of commons which caught Cameron off guard he wasnt expecting it. Jimmy Vile was being protected in my opinion this goes way higher than him or the BBC I think who was protecting him?? ,into the upper reaches of British society and where else who knows. The only "good" that can come from this tragic sordid affair is that as a society, as people, we demand these monsters are caught and when caught punished in the most severe way possible. They inflict their evil with a smile on their face.

The Sun have found video of a woman (she was 19) being groped live on air by Savile.

It's worth noting that in 1972 the BBC raised the minimum age for attending Top of the Pops to 16 (the age of consent in Britain). Only one reason for that as far as I can see....
