Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That's not from Irma but footage from a previous weather event. If you see the comment on the link it's from a tornado.
    my apologies, still looks bad.

    the airport is a mess

Looks like a downburst, crazy footage though.

Came across this one on youtube, not sure if they're trying to rescue the people behind the bus or just being incredibly stupid

    Another perspective of Irma.

I always like to see the damage these storms can do. Harvey was good, lets see can this one do more.

That's a bit intense, I appreciate how these storms can be exciting for us weather enthusiasts, however this one will cause an immense amount of damage! Just remember all the lives of people who are affected by this!

Looking at it from a more scientific perspective, it's a truly amazing hurricane, one we probably won't see the likes of for many many more years.

    Just to put in context....

Sometimes people think we have hurricanes here....with descriptions of hurricane force winds and the likes.

The highest sustained wind ever recorded in Ireland was 131 kmph.

Irma has expected sustained winds of up to 295 kmph!

    Mental altogether.

However looking threw his feed I'm wondering why the fcuk he didn't evacuate, he doesn't seem to know a particularly large amount about the weather.

He's another video of inside an apartment that has the roof blown off it in several places.

Footage from Irma, although from the idiotic title of the video, it is hard to decipher whereabouts it was taken:

In fact, I wonder if this is actually footage from the hurricane, but either way, it is cool.

It's pretty consistent with what I have seen in live feeds, so if it's not Irma, it's a similar Hurricane in the same region.

NOAA had Debbie back in 61 as a Cat 1 by the time it hit Ireland.

Keep in mind that mean speeds in tropical hurricanes are measured over the a period on 1 min. Mean speeds during Debbie, while nowhere near as strong as beasts such as Irma, were measured over 10 mins, so getting hurricane forces winds measured over this much longer period is quite impressive for this part of the world, and did cause considerable damage and loss of life here.

What damage is this likely to do to the western part of Puerto Rico? Near El Yunque National Park particularly.

It sounds a lot more dangerous than it actually is. The winds are horizontally quite stable in a hurricane, the vertical winds in a regular thunderstorm are far more dangerous for a plane. Planes actually fly in hurricane force winds at high altitude all the time, you've probably been in them without even knowing!

It still is a pretty badass job though, I'd love to experience it!

I was listening to the BBC radio earlier and at that point the neighbouring island to Barbuda hadn't heard anything from it which is a very scary image.

This hurricane just makes me realise that however much we think we have nature under control. We really really haven't. If nature wants to be destructive there isn't a thing we can do to stop it.

Communication systems would be down for days if not weeks so that is not a surprise.

Hearing unconfirmed reports that TS Katia has just been upgraded to a Cat 1 storm now too. IF true, that will be 3 Atlantic hurricanes on the go at the same time.

Don't worry, we may have Gale Aileen to worry about, possibly upgraded to Strong Gale Aileen :);)

Minimum Central Pressure down to 914mb, max sustained winds still 295km/h 185mph (remaining a Category five storm for this length is remarkable) moving WNW at 26km/h about 85km ENE of San Juan.
    NHC advisory 31
Still forecast to weaken, it just hasn't done that yet.
Miami is a serious potential concern now. Potentially starting Saturday with impacts with forecast for Hurricane Irma to be close to it Sunday.

When I think of the name 'Aileen', the first thing that comes into my head is a nice sweet cup of tea in a small white cup and two plain digestive biscuits.

Look at how the moisture has wrapped around the system in the past two days, excluding the dry intrusions (green) and increasing precipitable water to around 75 mm. That plus OCH now above 100 kJ/cm² from now to Florida. Savage.

    Hurricane Katia now confirmed:

"The NHC said that tropical storm Katia in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico had also become a Category One hurricane.
It said a hurricane watch was in effect for the coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz where heavy rainfall could be expected"

Update from weather channel after NHC update at 1700 US or 2200 Irish.
No major changes, still heading towards US and anticipated to impact as a 4 if not a 5. Once it hits Florida it will speed up or so it seems.

Sorry about the interrupt at the end of the first vid, too much competition for the WiFi at home with the kids

Jesus this hurricane has done some damage. Sorry if this has been asked but what category hurricane is it predicted to be when it gets to Florida ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,227 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

Looking at all suggestions now this could be something we'll remember for years with the damage it's caused.

The poor Carribbean nations won't deal with this well, they may need some significant assistance.

Either 4 or 5, not expected to weaken much at all over the coming days

From what I've heard, they are expecting C5.

If Jose hits as expected, I'm not sure how the Carribbean nations will ever recover.
Even if they rebuild, tourism is finished.

So basically Florida could be in for a serious shunt the weekend coming ?
