Always amazes me how few people seem to support the boys over here...

    Welcome aboard good sir!!

On the subject of the boys, what are we thinking in terms of the defensive moves so far? Serious overhaul at CB, thats for sure.

For me in terms of defensive moves during free agency we've to look at D-line and secondary seperately and consider the depth in the draft in both categories. We've seen a lot of rotation guys go on the D-line with only T McClain being the one i'd be disappointed we missed out not returning. He and Jack got better money offered so its hard to say they should've stayed in Dallas for less and i think the redskins and falcons have overpaid for both.

Losing Church was a blow but we couldn't compete with what the Ravens offered. JJ had a year but was mediocre prior to that and the questions is can he repeat that. Carr was disappointing but he was considering retirement. The fact he took and got a 4 year deal was a shock. Mo leaving was a bit oh well. Considering he was never fit for a full season its hard for us to invest heavily like the jets have on the one year deal. We're light now with only Jones, Heath (The GOAT) and Showers (former QB) to play at safety. Brown/ Carroll and Scandrick are solid starters with Frazier, L McFadden to add depth.

on the additions Nolan Carroll is an upgrade on Carr for most of the beat writers and lets hope he stays injury free and plays every game like Carr. Paea worked with Marinelli before so he'll know the system, its not a huge money deal so a nice peace to add. Moore is intriguing as he was highly touted coming into the draft but hasn't performed to the level required in the pro's. This is his last shot so hopefully he's keyed up to perform and get a contract.

The draft will be where we should see improvements to our d line. Theres a lot of depth at Edge (we need some) Corner and Safety. Ideally you'll address those three positions in the first 3/4 rounds of the draft using the best player available approach.

Thankfully on our Offense bar losing Leary (collins will replace him) and potentialy free retiring ( Cooper signed too) we've retained everyone on this side of the ball with Tony Romo being the elephant in the room

that may be a deal to reduce cap number and he retires next year and we can spread cost of the deal over a couple of years. WE're also light at TE with Hanna (coming off a season long injury) Swaim (unlikely fit before OTC) and Gathers (still not played fooball since 8th grade) as your support cast. Don't be surprised if we take a TE in the draft

Bad news coming out today the #9 has distanced himself from his teammates and coaches after they took up for #TeamDak.. if true and i'm not believing it after all the TR drama thus far, then its a sad day

also happy birthday to coach garrett

Obviously offensively we're in business: Unbelievable rookie QB RB combination, one of the best O-Lines in the league and a great combination of Bryant at WR and Witten at TE. One of the best offenses in the league with the potential to be the most dominant

Think most improvements could be made in the backfield, maybe an inside linebacker or two too

So long as they don't suffer a sophmore slump Zeke and Dak could be the bedrock of this team, but as with everything cowboys, lets give it some time and not get too far ahead of ourselves. I'd settle for consistency, and NFC East title and making the NFC championship game in 17.

You're right on the improvements required, it'll primarily be backfield we neeed. I think we're ok at LB unless an exceptional one falls to us. We could potentially take a hybrid OLB/DE type but i want War Daddies and not tweeners. Don't forget we've Jaylon Smith coming into the team and hopefully he can be the top 5 prospect he was coming out of college.

Most of the mock drafts i've done on fanspeak simulator have been DE in one and CB in 2 with WR in 3 and S in 4, using a BPA approach. So we should be able to really add quality.

Linehan and Marinelli have signed contract extensions

Front office doing some really good business

Witten deal includes no extra guaranteed money over the four years, well done everyone

Getting there, slowly but surely.... how great it would be to go into a season feeling optimistic, haven't had that in a while...

The draft will be very interesting.

So true, I'd reasonably confident heading into the season. We've a very good offense and if we could score more heavily and avoid a Zeke and Dak Sophmore slump we should make playoffs
We'll have a defense heavy draft even Stephen Jones has come out and said that and also stated there'll be no redshirts this year (i.e. no punts on injured players) so i'm liking how its all sounding. If will mcclay can work another draft like last years class I'll be beyond happy with it.

I'm going out on a limb & saying I expect us to make the playoffs, anything less than that would be incredibly disappointing, though I'll fear it just a little bit as well (What Cowboys fan doesn't) purely because, as you point out, Zeke & Dak could have second season syndrome & struggle, though I have a hunch they wont, I can see their numbers being lower but overall can see the offence perform better overall, if thta makes sense. Expecting a big season from Dez as well.

Call it blind faith but i think they'll all have better numbers and Dez will be even better as he'll be injury free and have had an off season to develop a relationship with Dak. I think Zeke could go for 2k+, Dak 3.5k + and Dez to have a 1,500 yard year. Now that is all based on no injuries and the O-line being as good as it has been. With Collins in for Leary and Doug Free not officially retired, and Bell and cooper as options along the line we should be fine

When you put it like that... :D Superbowl!!!!

All kidding aside, NFC East first, hate the idea of any of them beating us to the divisional title and then take it one game at a time. A lot will depend on what kind of defence is put together and how quickly they can gel as a unit.

Yea, i'll take a retention of the NFC east and then win a playoff game. If we could get to the NFC title game, that would be really nice.

I think the defence gelling would be great, we're looking at a new secondary which should hopefully be more athletic and around the ball. Linebackers should be ok and if Jaylon is fit that helps improves the unit. the defensive front should help and a new shiny edge rusher as long as an improved David Irving and Maliek collins should help.

I agree, I think Dez actually got better as the season progressed, plus I think Prescott developed a great chemistry with Beasley who impressed the hell out of me. If the two of them perform well, with Beasley acting as a slot reciever and Bryant as a vertical threat with Witten as an all round top class TE we could have a serious receiving core to work with

Add in Williams if he starts catching the bleeping ball and a WR in the upcoming draft and we could be up there with the falcons receiving corp

And so the day has come to pass
Tony Romo has hung up his cleats for a microphone and I would like to wish him the best of luck in his retirement
Tony owes this franchise nothing and dragged teams through single handed at times. He goes with the best wishes and fondness of all in the cowboys nation and we look forward to his analysis in replacing Phil Simms.

Couldn't imagine him playing for anyone else, he obviously felt the same.

I was in wembley in 2014 when Tony sliced through the jags for fun.

I was in Texas in 2015 when Tony injured his collarbone for the second time.

I was in Philadelphia on new years day when Tony played his last ever set of downs for the Cowboys and threw his last NFL touchdown against the Eagles.

Thank you Tony for being responsible for some of the highest highs and lowest lows I've experienced since i started re-watching football 12 years ago. I'm glad he got to go out on a good note.

I'm jealous, and welcome aboard the thread, a couple of extra bodies are always welcome ;)

I too only restarted watching properly three years ago so never really knew Tony but having read through several books etc i've learned of the struggles he went through and how he dragged them through seasons on his own at times. For me he'll never be Troy Aikman (best QB ever imo) but considering where he came from you can't doubt Tony and what he has done.

So.... Taco Charlton, DE from Michigan... not gonna lie, I know not a jot about him as the mock drafts were all utter rubbish (as usual) so never looked at him.

I was aware of him late in the college season, numbers stacked up from October. I know people are not overly happy (some wanted Watt at DE) and others wanted a CB (Keving King) but we need to improve the front seven and I think Taco will improve significantly by the end of 2017. Our D line is all about rotation so giving Rod Marinelli another piece to go with David Irving, Moore, Collins and Char;es Tapper redshirting his rookie year we could be surprised at what happens by close of season

The 2nd and third rounds have to be defensive backs for me. Corner and safety are needed. I'd love for Cordrea Tankersley or Desmond king at 60 and Marcus Williams if he falls to 92, i knw its unlikely.

I wanted Takk McKinley and the fact he fell to two places from us was slightly disappointing, but he's redshirting half of 17 and starting on PUP so maybe Taco was the best chocie.

Welcome along sir, yep ~97 Charlton - good to see he's take a proper D line number
Was certain it was going to be a CB but I think the top 3 picks were good overall

No an edge was always the choice as if they'd waited to 60 you'd maybe get 15th to 18th best edge whereas corner you were getting a top 8-10 choice.

I'm just surprised it was Charlton and not Watt. But Watt was an OLB in a 3-4 system whereas Taco was an edge in a 4-3 so was far more suitable. I remember seeing him in the Ohio Michigan game and he got after JT Barrett for sacks, QB pressures, pass break ups. Look forwards to that at the next level..

hey there to my fellow cowboys fans, hope you're looking forward to practice camp and 5 preseason games and the upcoming season.

Just wanted to drop yer a wee note in case any of you are looking for some memorabilia. Guy in the UK has some game worn jerseys and cleats and 4 signed Demarco Murray jerseys with certs of authenticity if anyone is interested. Its all genuine and above board stuff so if you've any questions or interest let me know and i'll put ye in touch with them.

The cowboys doing cowboy things over the weekend..
Traded for two players over the weekend and created a wee bit of history in the process.
Bene Benwikere - for a conditional 2018 sixth and in doing so Jerry Jones has now completed a trade with each of the 31 teams in the NFL. He was part of their initial 53 man squad on Saturday
Jayrone Elliott - for a conditional 2019 pick
Also picked up Brian Price off waivers from the Packers.
In doing this the cowboys cut Cedric Thornton and Mark Nzeocha who were on their 53 man squad on Saturday.

Thornton counts as a $3m hit against this years cap which is a bit of a surprise but the Cowboys did have space.

Funny story about the Thornton, I got game worn cleats this off season from a Cowboys kit guy. Sean lee and Barry Church cleats. As an added bonus and unknown to me the guy also threw in a pair of game worn gloves from Thornton in with them. I was thinking hmmm he has very small hands cos they fit me very snugly and I'm not exactly a 270+lb D line man....

    @ Brinty

How you feeling for the season?

First game nerves v the jammy Giants are par for the course but hopeful we can at least go 11-5, another 13-3 is a big ask in what should be an improved division & a tough schedule though.
A solid start & anythng could happen, a poor start & the fully expected second season syndrome for Dak & Zeke headlines will appear everywhere, but I have confidence that both will have solid second seasons.

Get into the playoffs & take it from there...

    I feel positive tbh sir.
Offensively we're in great shape and should score a lot its keeping the defensive mantra of bend not break that will decide how we do.
I think we're going to beat the giants on Sunday and should get between 10 and 12 wins for a playoff berth. And if we could get to the NFC championship game i'd be happy.

Agree, the NFC championship game really should be the target, still think the SB is a step too far for our defence.

Nice solid start to the season, would have ripped your arm off for a 16 point win over the only team that looked to have the beating of us last year before KO. Defence looked impressive & the offence did their job by holding on to the ball, to the extent the NYG defence looked gassed by HT... hopefully thats not a one off.

good start DvB, i'd have ripped your arm off for a one point victory, so 16 is even better.
Defence were good, but were the giants bad offensively. We'll se against Denver. Great to have Jaylon Smith on the field and that was a fumble. Silly officiating. The General was everywhere and the front guys worked so hard it left the secondary mainly untested. We could've had double the number of sacks quite easily and it wouldn't have been unjust. If we can get Damontre Moore and David Irving back and running hard we could have a great front.

Offence looked solid if unspectacular. La'el Collins got beat a few times and blew covers but JPP is a great player so that'll toughen up Collins at Right Tackle. Chaz Green was decent if untested at left guard so hard to say how he's shaping up. Zeke was zeke and if he gets 140 all purpose every week i'll be happy. Dez should and can do better. If he learned not to talk and just focus on the ball he could be a dominant top 5 guy. Dak had a mixed bag and should've ran in the ball from the three. His throws were off but got better as the game progressed so maybe some rust. Rec zone efficiency needs to improve but it was the first game of the season.

Special teams were great as usual, I'm looking forward to seeing Switzer at full pelt

Move on to week two and denver with a short turn around for them. Top 10 defence again (as it will be to through week 4) so i'd expect us to pound the rock up and blow holes in the defence. If we could get TD from Dz and Zeke and the defence plays as well i'd be happy with that. Mile high is not an easy place to go but Bronco's have not been scoring heavily so we have a chance.

    Ouch.
That was a crash and a half. Went to bed at 7-7 and am trying to work up the courage to watch the 'highlights' of the game.

Always suspected this would be a tough one, but a 20+ pt defeat!?

Don't bother mate it was awful, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Dak had two interceptions one in the last minute returned 103 yds for a touchdown, Zeke couldn't run the ball as they had eight in the box. Defence got shredded as they couldn't tackle, the secondary lost two players to HIA/ concussion protocols so we were down to bare bones there, the y couldn't stop the run... Too many penalties given away on both sides of the ball.

I could go on. I'm knackered today and just can't believe it.

But i think we needed a reality check. There's still too many passengers on this team. The fact that we have guys on their first contracts out performing guys we're paying a lot of money too says it all.

We have some cap room to make a few moves if needed but i dunno if we should do that either.

so from 13-3 last year to 2-3 this year... at this rate I'll be happy to get a wild card... went to bed at 21-6 last night & woke up to news of AR downing the boys again.... not liking how this season is shaping up at all, we look way off the pace to challenge which is such a disappointment after last year.

Its not as bad as we think, I'll try and discuss a few things
    1) O-Line is still gelling. Collins at RT and Cooper at LG are trying to build rhythm and tempo with the other three studs. This will take another few games. Leary going to Denver was always going to have a huge effect on the full line
    2) D-Line starts great but gets worse as players get rolled into the line up. Lawrence has been shut down, but with Irving back we might settle that line up into a consistent unit
    3) Linebackers are suffering without Lee in there. He should be fine in two weeks. Jaylon is out on his feet and is not at 100%. He could do with a couple of weeks out.
    4) Secondary is young and needs a leader. Scandrick has done what he can but is a player not a leader. Byron Jones has not lived up to his billing and us almost anonymous in games. Our corners are young and still getting up to speed
    5) Rookies - Have had no impact this year. Jourdan Lewis has been best of the bunch off no pre season. Charlton was never a plug in player and will need at least this season. Awuzie is injured again

There's hope there for the season and should still win the division. Eagles will eagle and fall. So if we can go 3-1 v them and the redskins we can win the East.

The Eagles (I feel dirty even writing this) actually are looking good. They may easily win the East, their fixture list isn't the roughest either.

I'm hoping we come good & sneak into the play offs on a late run of form... as it stands, looking at our defence I'm not overly confident... though to be fair I always thought our first 5 games looked a tough start, as it turned out the Giants are muck & we've only managed 1-3 in the others, would have been hopeful of at least 3-2 at this stage but I suppose thats only 1 game out.... time will tell, but we need a couple of wins to bounce back from the 2 defeats or we could be out of the running before the season even gets interesting.
