Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Only used the new section of road once but I'd say outside of peak times there isn't much of a time saver just a better road.

Left the port at 6 after the break got a clear run through Blackpool.. never happens... was in the door home 10 to 7. She got a quick spin down the road;-)

I never went the old road and only know the new one, the west of Ireland was never somewhere i fancied very much so never travelled it until recently for work purposes :pac:

They increased the speed limit from Tinkers Cross in Mayfield to the Glen Boxing club up to 60km/h that might have encouraged others to go a small bit faster.

But as it was a Friday you avoided rush hour in the area, it's a bigger curse if you're going from Blackpool to Tivoli.

You done well to get home for that time :D

Your lucky used to be a nightmare from clanebridge to claregalway. Then tuam was another headache. But not so bad now anymore the section of n17 from tuam to claremorris isn't so bad.

I know all too well. I ended up being few mins over going to the port but used the poa in the queue to hold the time. I keep the card as best I can so if mr RSA man stops me I should be ok. Only one infringement last year so try keep it the same this year.

I heard all the stories from the old timers above in Dublin one day about all the old roads, i'd have sat there for hours listening to them, how times are now very different.

A few minutes here and there isn't much once you don't take the p1ss.

I was stopped at the maldron hotel in Wexford 2 years ago,at the weighbridge, they went over the truck top to bottom and my tacho with it.

Was driving a 2010 DAF LF that day, what an awful journey it was

Great idea for a forum lads.

The father used to drive in the 70's and 80's. I was a nipper and getting to ride shotgun was the greatest pleasure you could imagine.

He did a lot of England work and then all ireland. Even remember the mother, myself and the 2 brothers going on runs with him!! 3 lads sitting on the bed in the back!!

He would have been in F10 and F12's, 141's and various ERF's. The very last yoke he drove was a very dark blue Daf 3300....he kept it immaculate and was in the process of buying it and going out on his own. It was left in to the garage by his employer at the time for a full service before the sale, and a young apprentice mechanic was showing off in it around the yard, and he smashed it in to a wall making absolute shìte of it!! Truck career finished.

I still have fond memories of his time in the lorry and I have huge respect for you lads on the roads.

    Keep on trucking!!

Don't suppose you'd have any photos of the lovely ladies?

Drove the length and breath of Ireland and the UK back in the day earning decent wedge with a few euro trips a year thrown in. The tacho, CPC and open borders work market rules have destroyed it as a viable way to pay the bills for most. I'm lucky i got out when i did tbh but i tip my hat to anyone doing it now. Know one lad who works in Aldi now and makes better money but he misses the driving terribly. Sad but that's the world we live in.

A guy i know who was doing it 30/40 years ago was on money so good he bought his house in cash.

Lidl offered me a job last year to come off the road on €11.50 an hour, i refused it, an offering of a 20 hour contract being the main reason.

If i could have juggled 2 jobs with a family i'd have done it.

Last time I was stopped was in an anolog fh on the youghal bypass the lad sat in with me said it's a waste of time looking at that sheet, offered him a cup of tay kept him chatting for half hour nice guy just doing a job. But a lot of them can be hard work.

I love listening to the old lads the story's some come out with are unreal. Even my old man going with him when I was young that's what got me into it. He's still at it too but treats it like the old days I'd be telling him he should be drawing cattle or milk because the tacho is only a decoration in the xf.
I couldnt go off the road into a shop or factory don't like the company of others :-)

I'd be in favour of the truck forum too. Don't drive myself but father did for 30 odd years and spent lot of my childhood in trucks too! Another Volvo fan they are savage. He did milk collection all Volvo's FL then FM. Also did some work in F10s.
I still go up to mccarthys in watergrasshill to look at new trucks in the odd time. Used to love going sitting in the new FH XL globetrotters when he would be in the getting something fixed the odd time. Was a savage FH 750 there end of last year was a cattle truck some machine.

Jesus, the Volvo F10, you're going right back there.

In relation to McCarthy's, i previously spoke with Colman McCarthy, he is a gent, i'd nearly ask for a tour of the place.

I'd say they get alot of custom from the Farmers considering they are suitably located near many of them.

Would have been good while ago now talking the early 90s or so. Used to do container work too which I preferred more driving and could end up going anywhere! Was cleaner too. Was taking to cousin who drives for same crowd father used to said all the FM's are ishift now said tis lot better. Said last manual will be retired this year.

I had the privilege of driving a 2013 750 old model. Was a left hooker a lad brought in for a heavy haulage crowed. Had to be cheeky and ask could i have a spin in it. Only took to about a mile and back but omg! Wasn't a blank fixture on the dash and a few screens. 8x2 DD.

I’d definitely throw my support behind this. I’m not a driver myself but have always had a look around the trucks that deliver diesel and meal to the farmyard here at home.

I didn’t realize there was a shortage of drivers in the industry.

It's fairly bleak to be honest. I know of 2 lads under 30 driving artics and only a hand full under 40.

Have ye the milk trucks calling as well? or do ye specialise in that area?

Oh there's a serious driver shortage.

Long hours low pay being the main reason.

FAS are forever upskilling potential drivers to try and plug the gap but due to experience issues amongst other things it isn't working.

Voted yes hopefully you get the new sub forum.

Never really try truck driving myself but spent many happy hours helping the driver and running around the warehouse, as a teen in the mid 90s I worked for vanfleet transport in Dublin started off on 2:50 punts an hour rising to a dizzying 3:50 an hour when I turned 18.

More recently I worked in nightline transport hq in finglas as a customer service office robot but I was happiest when I could escape the phone and sneak out and assist the multidrop runs in Dublin city centre and work away with no poxy phone stresses

Also I have friends in target transport in santry who post the odd nostalgic pic of the fleet from the 80s I'll attach them if come across them,

The office's in vanfleet had some lovely framed pictures of their brand new fleet of hino trucks parked on the old naas road, rocking the latest vtl livery. Probably early 90s

I love old trucks, busses, tractors, cars and bikes too so I would keep a nosey eye on the thread here...

Let's open this forum up a bit lads. Plenty of fine trucks in the west of Ireland too. Not just Munster.. Noting that Gillane is a galway crew who haul out of Charleville RDC.

I’m all for that, I’ve no photos outside Munster though, well I’m nearly certain I don’t.

You’re bang on with P&J Gillane.

I’ll go through my laptop to make sure I haven’t missed any non munster photos.

Have to get the camera back out and brush off the dust.

Wheel didn't really bother me but then again it's a MAN I'm in always so the renault wheel is about the same. Again Volvo comes out on top tidy steering wheel makes life so much easier.

The steering wheel adjusts better on the man. I’ve drive both in renault since last September. Easy to drive just I can’t get seat right due to short legs beer belly and big steering wheel.
Volvo is most comfy I’ve drove.

So are there any decisions in relation to trucking forum?
Should we take it to forum admins with a request or some other form of request?

There is a driver shortage for a reason and most lads in the industry know why, there is nothing appealing about driving these days, why would you bother.
I am under 30 and have no interest in driving anymore
Pays more to do other jobs and most companies have no interest in training or helping newly qualified driver out
I would not advise anyone young to go near lorries
    I know it sounds bad
Keep your money and train yourself to do something else
I wish I would have had the advice years ago

The request has only been up for three weeks. As per the Forum Requests charter:
    Forum Request Procedure

When any new forum request is made, the Request will be left open for a maximum period of 6 weeks from the start date. At the end of 6 weeks the number of *clear* votes of support or opposition will be counted up. If the final tally (votes in favour/votes against ) is greater than +18 then the forum will be considered popular enough for consideration. If the tally of votes is higher than +20 for a continuous period of a week then the forum will be considered popular enough for consideration and the remainder of the 6 week period can be discarded.

So it'll be a few weeks yet before any decision is made I'm afraid.

If you can find the right company it helps but the good guys are few and far between. Id be one of the rare under 30s. One of the few that seem to take on lads would be Martin Ryan's good few younger lads driving for them.

I must look the next time I'm home. I remember they closed all the roads in the local town to let the father pull an enormous gas tank to a local plant. Imagine as a kid sitting up high beside your father while the police stop all vehicles to give him a clean run with this massive load on!!
    Good times!!

As for getting a break with a company, i can think of 2:

Cork Express Pallets & Noel Hanley Transport.

When the local lads read that i know what they will say so i won't go further on those 2 companies.

I was talking to one of their employees before Christmas, he said that it was just going between the company's depots.

Personally i haven't seen it in person but it does look good.

It's all white and brown goods they do.
