Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    • cheaper cars from the larger european market

If you wanted to change something for the sake of changing, change the yellow diamond road signs to red/white triangular ones like elsewhere UK/Europe

    - VRT/other charges to compensate
    - By the time we see robo-taxis here the software will be well advanced
    - How does this affect insurance? More importantly, do you REALLY think it would?

But yea, no..... unworkable, unnecessary and not going to happen no matter how often this topic comes up here.

And here we go again, the same old claims made and the reality of how the world works seems to be ignored.

Making the pre tax price of cars cheaper doesn't equate to making cars cheaper here from the European market. It just gives more scope to raise taxes on them. Our cars are already some of the cheapest in Europe when you remove the taxes from them.

As for insurance, your giving insurance companies reason to raise premiums further if we have start having a tow tier system of rhd cars driving on the left or vise versa being an added risk.

Drive in the middle of the road and all roads a one-way system - then we can import from where we like.

If you miss your turn for Dublin though you'll have to drive to cork, kerry, onwards to galway and donegal then across to Louth before getting a second attempt- ya won't do it a second time i tell ya! :D

I think it’s worth a try. We could start with buses and trucks for a month, and if that goes well, follow on with the rest.

or alternatively we could do it on a part time basis at first until we get used to it. Say on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Any suggestion on what we should do with those who already drive on the right on country roads here.?
Would they adapt easily to driving on the left....:P:P

Accidents would plummet if this happened.

At least for a while... "risk compensation"

Can't with busses... Passengers get on on the left side :pac:

Change the buses. Bus builders will change bus bodies to suit any demand from the customer. If Japan changed to RHD, we would follow suit. You'd have to change over every single road sign in the country but they could probably do with a national overhaul anyway,as well as the road markings. Then, after the initial carnage, we would settle down. Wait until Covid is over so the hospitals would have room for the casualties.

Yeah but- there’s always the “Donegal” factor to consider - and what happens then with inter- county travel? :p

We're going to stop putting the clocks back and forward, and drive on the right. A trip to NI will involve changing the time and the side of the road.

not sure there are any real benifits to this.
huge negatives, higher no of crashs etc and the insane costs involved.

every sign would need to change
    every road junction
every on off ramp on motorways
    trafic light
    every roundabout
    most road markings
    etc
and all have to happen over night or there would be even more chaos
    never happen

Imagine having to switch from driving on the right to left upon going between Ireland and the North.

    *Brain melts.

    I'd say wait until reunification.

Also after that, get rid of that bloody clock change. I can't stand that at all.

Has anyone ever had a stab at the savings which would apparently be made on importing second hand cars from continental Europe? Cars from the continent must only be a few euro each to make it worthwhile to spend 100s of Millions of euro redoing our road network....
