Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I remember at university it was said some of the campus security men were lads who tried to get into the Gardai but failed the test. One lad was definitely trying to act the Garda, he was well known for catching students with more than the allowed 5 people in their campus room, thus it was designated as a 'party' by the Dean.

This lad would be skulking around the accomodation buildings around midnight to catch people walking out, after questioning he would then rat you out to the Dean and the student would get fined a hundred euro which was taken off their rental deposit. Same campus had huge trouble with bikes constantly getting stolen from it but gathering fines from students seemed to be this security guards main priority, he was widely hated as a result.

Know somebody who works for AIB and during the recession they would always say they were a florist when asked what they did. The had all the details too.

They just got sick of people ranting if they told them the truth.

It wasn't like they made big money either, they were low level

I dont know what he was up to but he had a complete hard on for students having 'parties' i.e. 6 people in one room. As said some of these lads wanted to be Gardai but didnt make the grade for whatever reason. So likely he was using his campus security job to prove to himself that he really could be a Garda by catching students socialising in such massive numbers as 6 people to a room. Sad stuff, none of the other campus security lads were like that, they would break up much larger parties but didnt go ratting the students out to the Dean to dole out 100 euro fines.

yeah similarily a good mate works on the counter in Ulster Bank and around the banking crash they were getting huge abuse at the counter off some customers who literally blamed them for the entire economic collapse. Some members of the public are just idiots really.

I operate a fleet of mobile car crushers. I’m the person the traffic warden calls when they encounter a car illegally parked and blocking traffic. Or when a Garda stops an uninsured driver or an accompanied learner driver.

My invoice goes to the car owner. Love my job.

I presume it's a different team for the smaller amounts? I find them extremely pleasant and helpful. I've been caught out a few times by just forgetting to pay on time and they'll generally just accept the original fee.

Ya, the general customer service front office departments handle 99% of standard due tolls and unpaid tolls with options to waive balances in certain situation (I won't publicly disclose)

They don't interact nor have access to the accounts me and my colleagues handled. Those customers were passed to us without their control.

There was 2 other debt management depts and let's just say looking back I/we absolutely fleeced people.

I grew a thick skin to people and pity stories.

    I still carry that mindset.

I was a complete target driven corporate c**t

I've been called every name under the sun and was told to hang myself a few times.

I undertook so much training over the years from multiple forms of sales and negotiation training, debt management training, payment plan and debt restructuring training plus endless call handling courses including difficult calls.

All that side of it was fascinating to me actually and so was finance overall and I learnt loads in my career but at the end of the day I was either still fleecing a single mother who was driving a 1 litre Corsa up and down each day of their children's allowance each week or big fleet clients like Tesco.

I eventually burnt out(years of working in a target environment makes you weary)

I became absolutely numb to stories and always focused on the goal at hand but looking back, it's a horrible job to be in.

You need to be 100% separated from human comparison whilst actually pretending you had it.

Again, looking back it's fascinating how we controlled negotiations, asked certain leading questions , using open and closed questions at certain times,

Jesus there is a lot more but at the end of the dsy it was a money driven machine that only generated profits upon profits for that poxy company.

I'm sickened how much millions my dept took in each year.

I've switched careers since and became an accountant

Now I save people from paying taxes on a daily basis in a compliant manner.

How times change but it's still all finance related.

Now, my goal to stop the Revenue from ****ing taken my clients money and by Christ that's my current goal

Wow, thanks for sharing. An interesting and semi familiar read, as I followed the same path. The accounts receivable department I started in was a little more run of the mill though to say the least.

Reminds me of the odd boy / son sketches by Harry Enfield.

A boy is playing with cars and a truck.
His dad asks him if they have broken down and he is fixing them.
No the boy says, they fell behind on their hire purchase payments and I am repossessing the car.

I've a cousin who has his own small building company, started off as a bricklayer and now has a degree in civil engineering. Far from ignorant.
His work is all word of mouth now , specialises in one off houses or refurbishments of older artisan style houses .
Hes booked up till early next year.

Of course there are great builders. I know one who was doing a garage conversion on a house in a local estate. He started the work at the height of the recession. It took him three years to get out of the estate because so many others wanted him to do work for them.
You will get the dodgy builders too but that happens with every occupation.
