I am defending no one but have an open mind . Was it that hand sanitizer named in the article that you bought ?

I'll be contacting the lab directly to find out the cost to retailers.
I can afford the price paid no problem but I'm really pissed at the gouging.
People are really pulling together over the past few weeks and this goes against all of it.

I'll update once I have news.

No need for that. Soap + water is as good as alcohol for this virus. The key is to remove the lipids/grease as this particular virus lives within a lipid molecule.

Use alcohol based sanitizers only where soap + water not available (work, shops, outside, public places, buses, trains etc).

If someone in your household has flu-like symptoms, consider regularly disinfecting objects in your home, since the new coronavirus has been shown to survive for 16 hours on plastics.

Never use different cleaning agents at the same time. Some household chemicals, if mixed, can create dangerous and poisonous gases.

If you use bleach, use one-quarter cup of bleach per 1 gallon of cold water, but be sure to follow directions on the product label. Make the diluted bleach solution as needed and use within 24 hours, as its disinfecting power fades with time, Duffy and Schaffner said.

Nonporous items like plastic toys can be dipped in bleach for 30 seconds. Household surfaces that won't be damaged by bleach should get 10 or more minutes of exposure.

Bleach solutions are hard on the skin, so don't use them as a substitute for hand-washing and/or hand sanitizer.

Many forms of alcohol, including rubbing alcohol, can kill germs. You can dilute alcohol with water (or aloe vera to make hand sanitizer) but be sure to keep an alcohol concentration of around 70% to kill coronaviruses, Duffy and Schaffner said.

Solutions of 70% alcohol should be left on surfaces for 30 seconds (including cellphones) to ensure they will kill viruses. Pure (100%) alcohol evaporates too quickly for such use.

Unlike bleach solutions, alcohol solutions will remain potent as long as they're kept sealed between uses. But a 70% alcohol solution with water is harsh on the hands and shouldn't be used as a substitute for hand-washing and/or hand sanitizer, Duffy and Schaffner said.

Hydrogen peroxide is typically sold in concentrations of about 3%. It can be used as is, or diluted to 0.5% concentration for effective use against coronaviruses on surfaces. It should be left on surfaces for one minute before wiping.

Natural chemicals such as vinegar and tea tree oil are not recommended for fighting coronaviruses.

Higher price will help stop hoarding and if it was EUR1 for 200ml you'd probably walk out the door with 10 bottles.

    Re; P3 masks

There’s mad b*stards charging £300 Sterling for a pack of 5 online and saying they can’t guarantee you’ll get the brand you requested 👀

Still looking for a link to a reasonably priced P2 or P3 mask and I just need the one

    Cheers

It can harm if people use something that has no effect in place using the real thing or washing their hands. Not saying your daughters are doing this by the way.

We should regard profiteers like they do in war. Fine them, if that doesn't work prison. Though I'd happily line them up against the nearest wall. I'd be a bit of a fascist mind you. Oh and I'd most certainly include big business types too. They escape too damned often(QV nazi Germany).

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Price should be €1 a bottle.

    €100 for the second bottle.

I saw a picture of a supermarket in Denmark doing exactly that. First bottle was cheap enough, but you have to pay through the nose for a second.

For any blokes would give the tea-tree oil fancy stuff a bit of a wide berth (endocrine disruptor).

Glycerin or WD40 oil if really needed, with a splash of brut/old spice.

I'd love for hand sanitiser to come back into the shops. Out of necessity, I still have to move around in the outside world a bit. Unless I start towing a tank of water and a bar of soap around with me, washing my hands isn't always practical.

  • Registered Users Posts: 871 ✭✭✭voluntary

What I find disappointing is that it's been over 3 months since the virus started spreading in China, the gov received the first reports of the risk of spreading the virus outside China in early January and yet they failed to ramp up the basic hand sanitizer production.
The hand sanitizer should be widely available in every shop and cheap as potatoes at this stage. How can people comply with advises to sanitize hands if we can't even buy a hand sanitizer?

A local distillery (small operation) is making it so that's where I got bottle today. It seems to be a side operation for a few of these sorts of places now.

    An economic homemade version:

500 ml of Methylated Spirit from woodies for 3.99 add 200 ml tap water and some glycerin or/and E capsule content.
keep it sealed so the alcohol doesn't vapor.

Don't drink! Methylated alcohol is poisonous.

Why would you drink hand sanitizer?

    People drinking it?

Do you have evidence that's effective?

Edit: I was thinking of white spirits. I guess the above would be about 65-70% alcohol so should work.

Should have over 90% alcohol content, mostly ethyl with some additives so people don't drink it.

60% is sufficient. Some medical ones are 85%, but that is at the high end.

    heh?

    metalated is 90%+

    mix 500ml to 200ml (71%+)

maybe add some other stuff, still quite above 60% that is sufficient.

What are you on about with your fake stuff?

Apologies, I thought you were saying the sanitizer had to be 90%

Here's an easier way to make it

500ml Catalytic fragrance lamp liquid. It's 90% alcohol and has essential oils. Add 300ml aloe vera gel. Done.

Main brands are Lamp Berger and Ashleigh and Burwood

Handmade soap company is taking per orders for 100 ml bottles going on sale next week. You'll pay 7 or 8 euros for the sanitizer & 6 or 7 euros p&p. Expensive but it's 70 percent alcohol

Beauty basket.ie still has it online. That’s where I bought from. As someone above pointed out, it’s probably overpriced for what it is (€10 for 200ml, €6 for 100), but I was happy enough to pay it to have a bottle on the go in the car.

maemae.ie has 4 50ml bottles for €15, expensive but supply, demand, cost of manufacturing is up.

beauty basket also has larger bottles still available.

I was over a full week waiting for a bottle of isopropyl alcohol from Radionics. Usually thats stuff they have sitting on the shelf. I have no interest in using it to make hand sanitisers but maybe someone wants to have a go

Guys, Local hardware store has a big box of carbolic soap. That is the gold standard of hand sanitizing - at least it was 50 years ago :)
But seriously, its €1.50 a bar and is death to any virus or bacteria etc... it's what surgeons used for nigh on 100 years!

Never mind this alcohol, that is actually less effective than soaps. Only thing you need to do is have some water with you or nearby to use it!

I made DIY 10 liters for family and friends.

Took me a week to get the ingredients from the UK.

Here is the instructional video I used: https://youtu.be/oMyWATwyu5Q

Following on from the video link...I used pharmaceutical grade isopropyl alcohol 99.9% and carbomer 940. It’s functions the same as 980 and only difference is how it’s produced. I distilled water myself using a fairly simple method however it took a while so I recommend ordering some from amazon...It’s cheap.

    My full recipe list is:
Isopropyl Alcohol 99.8%, distilled water, vegetable glycerin, carbomer 940, TEA to neutralize, and I needed cheapo ph test-sticks too. Going forward my only limiting ingredient is alcohol as I’ve a good supply of the less voluminous ingredients.

I also mixed a simple alcohol and water solution in a spray bottle for things like cards, purses and phones.

I aimed for an alcohol concentration of 70% after some research.

Side note: soap and water is best...this is just if you’re stuck. I did this for the challenge and it was fun. Don’t know what to do with myself now...

Edit: Compare this ingredient list with that of the hand sanitizer currently being sold by the handmadesoapcompany...identical

Just checked the hand saniitiser I got in pre-pandemic times in LIDL. The alcohol is listed on the second position after aqua, so it must be below 50% alcohol content. Be aware.

That's a labeling rule for food packaging, are you sure it applies here as well?

Can’t speak for Lidl but an old Aldi bottle that I found at the bottom of my handbag is 73.5%.

60% is minimum according to WHO. So 59% isn’t effective but 60% will be is how I interpreted it, so those mae mae bottles should be ok if we can’t find stronger. Lots of local distilleries making their own now too, like Listoke gin.

Electronics stuff will normally be 99.9% pure so you need to dilute it otherwise your hands will be fecked.

It seems like the one Lidl sells in UK has high alcohol content, but the one sold in Ireland doesn't. Not sure if that's right.

Just googled images of UK version, has a 'highly flammable' marks on the back and says 73.5% alcohol

Needless to say if you do make some stuff it needs to be very clearly labeled, and stored out of low reach.

Over in Iran, hundreds of lads are now brown bread, after having a swig at Methanol, in search of a magic cure.
Their high alchohol based paint-stripping solution must have been hugely misinterpreted (guess that happens under a regime, without free flow of information or booze),
this happened after a British chap there, casually told someone in passing, that he took whisky and honey to relieve his symptoms.
