Rain in much lighter here than forecast. A blessing in one way but no less miserable out.

Sleet falling in Kildare now, getting heavier

beginning to think many of the models handled this one quite poorly. Temperatures several degree's higher than what was foretasted for this time, rain not really as heavy as some of our most recent deluges. The GFS was backing away from the colder/snowy potential early on today tho.

Still snowing here (just above Westport) and the snow is beginning to stick. Temp. 1,0ºC

All the models are predicting the mid level airs to get cooler further North later. I am wondering that what the models are predicting is frontal boundary forcing coupled with evaporative cooling. With the advancing and developing system the cold front is catching up with the warm front and as it reaches the colder air in the upper third of the country forcing the air to rise. The charts are showing quite a bit of shear and lift as the front moves in proper over the Northern counties.

I think the models are too close to be dismissing them at this stage.

Plenty of heavy rain on the way in overnight too across the country.

It's snowing fairly heavily now in Castlebar, Mayo. It's a bit on the wet side, it's accumulating fast on rooftops, but not particularity on the ground.

For what it is worth, here is what the latest GFS is showing prep wise for around now. Blue = snow. Might be overdoing it a bit but seems consistent with the reports coming in at present. Any snow becomes more confined to the north of Ireland in the next (3am) frame.

Ah come on, I was already resigned to it being a bust and just about to get to bed so I'd be nice and fresh for the morning but guess I'll have to wait up another while now :pac:

Stil dry in Letterkenny but judging by radar it should start any minute

How does the radar *know* it's snow rather than some other form of precipitation? Technical question.

It doesn't "know". They estimate using an algorithm based on model output and latest observations. It can be pretty accurate at times and completely wrong at other times. It's a pretty decent guide overall imo.
