Just want to add 'Black Book' (the Dutch movie, not the TV show) on here. A Paul Verhoeven film Enjoyed it very much, it stars Carice Van Houten (Melisandre from GOT) Thought she was brilliant (as all the other cast) and the plot moved at a great pace for a period film, some brutal scenes though, be warned.

    Is it with (English)subtitles?

Yes. You can check the setting if not turned on automatically.

I really enjoyed that movie, didn’t fully understand it when I first watched it but enjoyed it none the less, particularly on repeat viewing as it sunk in. Broadbant was indeed great, as was grant, I originally missed one of his roles.

You'd be forgiven having missed some of the actors. I completely missed that Halle Berry played the character in bottom right. I really liked the book but couldn't figure out how they were going to film it.

For those that like Tom Twyker's stuff, they should check out the Netflix/Sky neo-noir Berlin 1929-set series. Great television.

Im watching Wiseguy. I remember i was too young to watch it when i was a kid and it was on Sky One in the late 80’s. It was their main show for years.
Reminds me a lot of Crime Story. Great actors, good writing. A few 80’s US tv cliches (it was created by Stephen J Cannell and Frank Lupo), suitable for granny to watch cause theres no cursing. Great tv and hard not to tune in next week!! (I mean 4 seconds later)

Going to start this later. I vaguely remember it from years ago. Looks like it has a great cast.

Just watched The Witness. The story of Kitty Genovese and his brother's quest for answers (if there's any, really) It's still shocking and so sad and senseless, she was a real person beyond the footnote in a sociology/psych book. I didn't expect it be quite gut wrenching at some points, cried at a particular scene around 15 minutes before the end. Highly recommended.

Watched The Vast of Night - a really interesting if somewhat messy indie sci-fi. Lots to like - great and unusual 50s setting; some very imaginative, sweeping camerawork and smart long takes; an admirably slow-burn mystery. It is an imperfect beast - despite the short length, some stretches seem overlong, and the visuals are inconsistent. Not entirely sold on the ending either. But it is a very distinctive and engaging debut feature at its best, so keen to see what director Andrew Patterson does next.
I love low budget sci-fi with well-executed clever ideas; this one's a little different. It's all about the director here, as the story has been told a thousand times already. The inventiveness here isn't in the sci-fi at all; it's the way Patterson draws us into the post WW II little-town America fueled by optimism and innocence, yet tinged with paranoia of the Other, setting us up in our knowingness for the inevitable 'will they show them or not?' question. Tbh, I was a little bored at the start, but it started shifting up the gears, and by the end I was enthralled.
Not entirely sold on the ending either.
Yeah; could've done without that very last shot.

I watched Cold War this evening. Best film I've seen all year. Beautiful cinematography and flawless acting from two very charming leads. Some great music too, jazz piano, my kinda thing. It's not often I complain a film is too short but that would be the only criticism if I had to choose one.

Beautiful film, should have got the love that the absurdly overrated Roma got.

Opened this on the PlayStation today where I usually watch it and my "watch next" list has disappeared? Anyone have the same problem?

EDIT: It appears to have been an app update which completely wiped "watch next" as well as my watchlist. Very frustrating.

Also started watching Future Man, entertaining in parts but the plot is really stretched thin.

My LG Amazon app got a recent update and now its more like the Apple TV app version. "Watchlist" is now called "Your Stuff" and it no longer tells you if what you are watching is UHD or just 1080p

The interface is so bad I wouldn't mind the promos but they're always for either The Hunters or Angel Has Fallen. They need to mic them up more.

Watched The Vast of Night. Thought it was pretty terrible. The way they spoke to each other was so annoying.

The first season is slow and a bit unfocused; seasons 2 through to 4 really show a change in pace and direction.

American Gods is good, bit weird to start but definitely worth a watch as you get more into it.

Hunters is excellent. I would recommend that one. I loved The Boys, thought it was very good. The first two seasons of Jack Ryan were also very good. Picard is excellent so is Alex Rider.

The Widow is a good watch but then again I'd watch anything with Kate Beckinsale in it :D

I saw the first two seasons of The Man in the High Castle, need to continue watching that.

Watched the first season of Threadstone and it wasn't bad, entertaining and some very good fight scenes in it. It's entertaining like the way Jason Bourne movies were and based on those obviously.

James May in Our Man in Japan was enjoyable.

Couldn't get into Good Omens, the concept is good, but not my thing.

Rewatching House atm, I forgot how good Hugh Laurie was in it.

Started watching Upload, think a few people mentioned it when it was first released. I can see why there were comparisons with The Good Place but it's tonally quite different. I've only watched 3 episodes but I really like it so far.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford seems to have been added recently. Haven't seen it myself but have heard only very good things about it.

Probably been mentioned many times already, but Bosch is very good. Have watched 3 seasons now in a short enough space of time.

Also started watching Animal Kingdom. Was not sure after the first episode would it be very one dimensional , but it does get better and better.

Loved Animal Kingdom! But I started watching it thinking the show had finished, but its still going. Amazon only have the first 3 seasons, so hoping they continue to pick up subsequent seasons......

Watched Honey Boy last night. Written by Shia LeBouf about his relationship with his father. Well worth a watch, even if it kind of ends a tad abruptly.

Leboeuf is excellent in it, as is the boy, Lucas Hedges. It's a bit of a downer of a film, but as you say, well worth the watch.

Terrific show, there's a dedicated thread for the Americans buried somewhere in the forum. Absolutely gripping show and baffling how it never gained a broader following

    Quite enjoying it. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

I just finished the boys, thought it was great, homelander is such a great character. I'm not into superhero stuff at all either. Billy really butchers his accent though, it has to be one of the worst attempts at cockney since Dick Van Dyke!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,109 ✭✭✭The Raging Bile Duct

Super has been added. It's a great little film that got overshadowed by Kick Ass when it came out but it's definitely worth a watch.

I only watched 2 eps of it but I could not figure out if he was even trying to do an accent, he just sounded Australian most of the time bar the odd weirdly pronounced word.

Yeah, I thought he was just doing his normal accent - he's from New Zealand originally.

I get the show is broadly liked but ye gods the accent is astoundingly bad. Borderline show derailing at times. Saved only by the díckhead charisma of Urbans performance.

I think his accent is deliberately over the top. Enjoyabe tv series, looking forward to season 2 in Sept

You mean 'hammy', as in deliberately OTT for the sake of art. I think it's just sh1te. Deliberate or not though, it is annoyingly distracting.

Agreed, watched it on the weekend. Wasn't what I was expecting at all. Quarter of an hour in I wasn't convinced at all but really enjoyed it once it found its stride

If everyone else was playing it broad and OTT, then yeah I'd be inclined to agree. Everyone else appears to be keeping it straight, bar maybe The Deep; I think Urban is doing his best myself, the end result being a bloody awful Cockney droll. Maybe it's a defence mechanism and Butcher intentionally aping the accent. The twist being he's actually from Ohio or sommit

Loved season 1. Season 2, I struggled with to the end, but didn't bother with it after that.

Any idea why Prime no longer sending Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos for shows that had it? and if the video quality is still reduced due to Covid?

Tag is worth a watch, found it surprisingly decent and better then I expected.
    Bit of hangover/game night vibe.
