"I love you Philip Morris" is such an under appreciated gem. Much like "Behind the Candelabra" it suffered in the land of the free due to the homosexual content. It's based on the true story of multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell played by Jim Carrey and is hilarious and also heartbreaking at points. My advice is if you haven't seen it then don't do too much reading up on it as it might ruin some surprises.

I watched 2 episodes of The Wilds today. It launched yesterday.

It's about a bunch of teenage girls from different places who are on their way to some retreat in Hawaii when their private plane crashes. They end up stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. So far, so Lost, but..... interestingly, it opens with one of the girls being interviewed by a police officer and a councillor about what happened on the island. So we know immediately she's made it back alive. So then there's flashbacks to her on the island on day 1 and her life before she was sent on the retreat. Second episode opens with one of the other girls and it plays out the same except her island flashbacks are day 2.

I wasn't really sure about the 1st episode, some of the dialogue sounded like a 40 year old writing for a 17 year old and it was just a bit of putting for a while but the island stuff had me interested enough to keep going and by the end of episode 2 I'm really liking it.

Watched "the night before" with seth rogen and Joseph Gordon Levitt last night.

While its very predictable and formulaic, it was an easy watch with more laughs than I expected......Afterwards Amazon recommended I watched Old School, cruelty for a sleep deprived parent of two young kids. Of course I watched it, had 3 more bottles of beer and laughed my arse off.....and am up now since 530 with the house being trashed by the young lads. Totally worth it though

I watched 4 episodes yesterday and was cursing myself for starting it because I'm now pretty busy for a couple of days and probably won't get to watch more until the end of the week. I was looking up one of the actors to see what I knew I from and accidentally saw a bit of a spoiler so it seems quite a few people have finished it already.

It's very binge worthy, which isn't something I say about a lot of things. No idea how it will end but there's been a pretty good drip feed of info so far and a couple of gasp moments.

Only a 5.9 on imdb which had me ignoring it, but I'm reconsidering now with all this positive talk!

Obviously it's all down to personal taste. It is essentially a show about a group of teenage girls, which will put people off automatically, which is kind of dumb. There's nothing more dramatic or intense than a teenage girl and throwing that into any kind of genre situation, if done well, can be great.
The first episode, as I mentioned, has a few moments where the script sounds like it's not a teenager speaking but in hindsight I think it was a kind of exposition thing and ultimately necessary, but after that I've enjoyed every minute of it.

Watched ‘Time’ this weekend - heartbreaking stunner of a documentary. Incredibly economical (well under 90 mins) but packs the weight of a huge amount of time and emotional weight into that space. As powerful a study of the human costs of the American criminal justice and incarceration system as you’re likely to find. Well deserving of its critical acclaim and high-placing on many end of year lists (no 2 on Sight & Sound against some very strong competition).

I'm two episodes into The Wilds now and I agree with how some of the dialogue feels a little jarring although it felt a lot more obvious in the opener.

Not really a spoiler for the first episode but just in case,
what has Rachel Griffiths being doing for the last 10/15 years? Massively surprised to see her show up at the end of the first episode.

I know she was randonly in that Irish film with Barry Keoghan, Mammal, a few years back. But other than that I I can't say I've been aware of her since Brothers and Sisters.

Haven't seen the Matrix in years either, I've been looking out for it for a while so it'll be interesting to see how the action and effects aged. Interesting to see it's rated 18, I didn't think it would even be rated 15 these days.

It's conceivable it was misunderstood/misapplied, but not likely. It's more conceivable that the humorous connection was unintentional (and conceivably/possibly missed). :)
If it was intentional, then :D.

I finished The Wilds. I really enjoyed it. It's very binge worthy. They give you enough information to keep you watching and make you feel smart when you figure something out before it's revealed, but there are multiple reveals that genuinely shocked me throughout. I'm really hoping for a S2 because there are a lot of unanswered questions at the end.

this is basically part 1 of a season. there is 0 closure on any front. Everything is left up in the air, and that takes away a lot of its strength. Season 2 better be very tight or it'll go the way of lost and lose its way completely.

For most of the the season I thought
we were getting lots of answers and it was refreshing for a show to not hold back but then all of a sudden there's one episode left and I have a list a mile long of questions that need answering! I don't think that takes away from the strength of S1 though. It left us all demanding a S2 which seems like a perfect way to end S1.
I've been reading up since I finished and someone said that the creator said she's got a 5 season plan for it. I don't know if that's true or not but it definitely needs another season.

Hopefully it gets a second season anyway. It was all filmed in New Zealand so it's possibly one of the few shows that's Covid safe, which has to be a plus.

I actually feel like watching it all again because there's a lot of stuff revealed in later episodes that would probably give a different view on things that happened in earlier episodes.

Yeah me too thanks for the recco. I enjoyed it, a bit preachy at times but considering its a drama about teenage girls, it probably could of been a lot worse.
Actually only the scene in the cafe talking about the patriarchy was really bad, i burst out laughing randomly such was its madness.
But overall very bingeworthy, very good actresses almost all round. I'd give it a 7.5.
Maybe having watched so many survival shows like Dorothy, they just had things a bit too easy in terms of food and water....
Will be interesting indeed as to where the writers take this...

I think that can kind of be explained by
the fact that it is supposed to be a controlled environment. Presumably the island was chosen as one that would provide some level of basics. When Fatin found the fresh water waterfall Gretchen mentioned that they'd reached that milestone earlier than expected. And they were rationing food and foraging pretty well up until they saw the plane fly over.

much like Leah's monologue in ep1 about the trauma of being a teenage girl, I don't disagree with what they're saying, it's more the way they're saying it. Although, as we saw more of Leah throughout the series I realised she probably would talk like that. She's very intense. Gretchen, as the villain, was probably the least fleshed out of the characters. We could piece some of her history together from things other people said but mainly we only saw her manipulating other people so maybe her conversation with Nora was what she knew Nora needed to hear to get her on board.
But yeah, I felt like the rest of what we saw on screen made those points very well, we didn't really need to have it spelled out for us in such obvious ways through dialogue at either end of the series. But it's a minor quibble.

Yeah the skill of subtlety is far more effective. Ever artist has their messages whether we agree with them or not, but when it comes to moralising if you really want to get a message across, being blunt about it really pushes away viewers or lets say people with an opposing view or an on the fence view. If indeed the goal is to get more people to see things the way the artist does, subtlety and skill would deliver a better result.

But as you said minor quibble!

I see The Wilds has been renewed for S2, thankfully. So many questions at the end of S1. It films in New Zealand so hopefully there shouldn't be too much of a wait between seasons.

I watched the movie Mary and Max there recently. I was a little put-off by the look of the stop-motion animation, but once I got past that, it was an exceptional film. Funny, touching, sad, painfully real at times.
The only issue is a problem with the vocal track (vocals are significantly lower than both music and sound effects). I can only assume this is an Amazon issue that needs to be corrected.

Finished it tonight and had a look through those spoiler comments above and I actually think my opinion of the show isn't that far removed from that of everyone who watched it here.
Pretty sure I'd have enjoyed the show a lot more if every single scene that featured dialogue from the Rachel Griffiths character was cut. That cafe scene was the worst offender but the whole premise, while more than likely integral to the story line of future seasons, could just have easily been subtly hinted at rather than delivered in such a hammy way. I found it quite jarring. The only downside would be that it'd feel very much like a Lost reboot but you'd have no complaints from me.

Obviously everyone has their own taste but for me it's one if the best things I've watched this year. I was genuinely surprised by how much depth it had. I was expecting some sort of trashy, melodramatic, soapy, teen angst thing, a fun way to kill a few hours but ultimately forgettable but it absorbed me completely and I find myself still thinking about it some of the unanswered questions.

I do agree that there were a couple of scenes with less than subtle dialogue, but they accounted for maybe 2% of the show, if even, so not enough to spoil the rest of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Probably didn't come across in my previous posts but I thoroughly enjoyed the show, I thought the island and flashback material was superbly done. I just thought the rest felt pretty clunky. As you alluded to though, my personal taste would be more aligned with a show that offered a vaguer explanation as to what the hell was going on. In fairness, I'm probably a long way from the target demographic too so I'm more than happy to praise the show for what it does well.

It's very heavily indebted to Lost. I'm about halfway through. I'll probably finish it but I'm in no mad panic. It's grand for what it is.

As you alluded to though, my personal taste would be more aligned with a show that offered a vaguer explanation as to what the hell was going on. In fairness, I'm probably a long way from the target demographic too so I'm more than happy to praise the show for what it does well.

Indeed. I was talking to someone else who watched and enjoyed it but had approached it like it was a full blown mystery show so they had some issues with how much information about what was really going on had been revealed too soon. Personally I saw it as more of a character driven piece with a small level of mystery thrown in, so I was actually quite happy with how much they revealed of the other stuff.

watched the Oscar Pistorius docuseries. As usual it just feels like there is one episode too many, but was very enjoyable overall. A lot of info i didn't recall or know and interesting to have it all put together like that.

Almost all the films are gone off mine. It keeps saying - This Title is not available in your current location. Do I need my settings changed? This will definitely make me rethink keeping Prime
