Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah there's simply no way that woman is 54. I'd struggle to put him at 47 either.

If the photos are from social media they could be taken years ago.

Edit: Nevermind, the photo was taken last year so recent enough.

You could use rounds that explode close to the target. That is actually what many air defense systems are designed to do. They could be fired and programmed to explode above an area free of people or aircraft.

Then you seriously compromise the effectiveness of your proposed weapon system by using your operational criteria. Any nefarious drone operator will use these operational parameters to their advantage.

The are a number of anti drone defensive systems available which use electronic countermeasures and tracking systems which currently present the best defence against Drones in a non battlefield setting.

Whoever those people are, they aren't 54 and 47 either way around. I'd advise extreme caution in assuming anything from rumours until daytime if not Monday or even after Christmas

Given their ages and the fact they live in Crawley (beside Gatwick) you'd have to suspect some sort of environmental/anti-Gatwick protest.

    Maybe they're just f-ing idiots?

They're youthful looking but clearly not spring chickens.

I think it remains to be seen whether they have the right people. They were saying on Sky News just now that police are searching a nearby house and that they will have to either charge or release them shortly or apply to a magistrate for an extension.

It looks as if the only evidence they have at this stage is circumstantial. From reading about the couple, it looks as if they may just tick some of the boxes, but there's nothing disclosed to date that would suggest a motive. Unless they find a "smoking gun", they may have no alternative but to release them.

If they are innocent, I really hope for their sakes that the police catch the actual perpetrators as otherwise the finger of suspicion may hang over them for the rest of their lives.

Released without charge according to sky news

If they own drones (which they apparently do) then all they need to do is inspect the flight logs which is incredibly easy to do and it will show dates/times/locations of any flights. Should be easy enough to rule them in/out.
From what I’ve read I would have serious doubts over whether it’s them. His boss is providing an alibi and his neighbours are dying they would be shocked if it was them. He works from 7am to 7pm etc

So nice of the rags to publish their photos everywhere before they’ve been charged, probably have a case for suing the papers now given they’ve been ruled out.

Yeah I was very surprised that they were all over the papers this morning. BBC vs Cliff Richards comes to mind.

    Hope they get millions.

Clearly the whole 'drones' nonsense is a cover-up for what actually went on. If there was a possibility of a major attack then that's maybe understandable, but the duplicity of the official media is laughable.

All you smart people who think that shooting it down is a good idea. Where will it fall ? Where will the rounds that miss go ? Think guys think... Finding a bullet on the runway ? Bullets travel for miles Mate...

they are beginning to look their age now. so long as some vigilante fool doesn't decide to exact "justice". i would have thought they will need some form of interim police protection after this.

No ethics from UK tabloids as expected, plastering their faces all over the news before they're even charged. Police shouldn't be releasing names either if that's how they got them.

mind you if they play their cards right, employ the services of a good publicity/media agent, give the mandatory exclusive interview "How our lives were destroyed by Drone maniacs".

then there's the issue of psychological distress, depression, and of course possible Home Office compensation...

all in all it might yet turn out to be a bumper Christmas for them.

SkyNews has reported that a damaged drone was found close to Gatwick airport.
Could be connected to the recent "attack".

I agree with those calling for some type of mandatory chipping process, similar to what we have on Dogs, which would enable the owners of these things to be located more easily. Cant imagine it would add much more than a tenner per unit to the pp.
As it stands these idiots are in danger of effectively criminalising all drone hobbyists, which is not fair.

The press really is populated by unscrupulous odious individuals. I hope the couple get suitably compensated for this carry on. Questions will need to be asked of the police and their interaction with the media in releasing the names of suspects as well

I'm guessing from the layout that's the Daily Mail. What a ****ing rag. "Drone couple" in large font even in the story saying they're not suspects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,380 ✭✭✭STB.

Well that couple are in for a nice windfall.

The Daily Mail doing what they do best, printing front page headline "Are these the Morons who ruined Christmas ?" before someone is even charged.

They have certainly ruined Geordie Greig's Christmas now that they have been released without charge. What a moron for printing such a headline.

Yes I know. Most newspaper headlines that have the word morons can safely be disregarded. Or Indeed Daily Mail above them.

Some of the responses to Piers Morgan are hilarious.

I particularly like the one that says "You should hack their phones just to make sure."

It will be a shít Christmas for this couple, but next year they'll be in the Bahamas.

Well they would not have officially given their names but they would have handed the names over on the quiet. As they always do. Is in cases like this where this practice is shown up

It's quite possible that someone either saw police activity outside their house and contacted a tabloid or tweeted about it and were contacted, or that they were aware that the couple were drone and remote controlled aircraft enthusiasts and both called the police and the press.

People can be utterly charming sometimes.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that it was the police. They're under huge pressure since they released names of high-profile people under investigation who subsequently turned out to be entirely innocent. So, I doubt they'd be running to the press with names on something that is potentially a very complex and even sensitive operation.

There was a total vacuum of anything coming from the police during the incident and I think the press were likely hunting around for leads and found some either online or from someone who was willing to gossip.

In all cases I saw on broadcast media, it was said that "the couple were named LOCALLY as..."

In other words, the police didn't name them. The journos covering this were getting the info from neighbours etc.

Drone still hanging around or disappeared since the arrests?

There’s a constant Helicoptor presence I’m at the airport right now, flights operating as normal
