Chippers/Takeaways in Sligo

So its the time of year we sould be starting new years resolutions, but lets face it, we nearly all like chips, so in houner of the humble chip, wheres the best place in sligo, or what ever your craving is to get them.

For me, it depends on the craving, home made chips has to Happy Eater arcross from the bus station, kebabs from Zam Zams on High Road or Best on Castle Street, Best also could for the post club Soakage. If i ever get the urge for a battered mars bar again, Borzas on Mail Coach Road, and curry chip, nothing beats or comes close to Four Lights.

Food Experience in Wine Street Car park have not tried yet nor have i tired to place beside the Video Shop at the Car Park enterence.

So give us your ideas, and what brings you there.

Surf and Turf (the food experience one) does a mighty burger. Borza for everything else. And outside SLigo town, the Humble Spud in Gurteen is splendid.

    Four lights hands down.

Nothing beats a cury cheese big four sauce and bacon chips.

    Nothing!

I agree, Borza is definitely the way to go. Their Curry Cheese Chips are to die for. Mmmmm. Zam Zam and Best don't impress me much

The Bucket of Chicken in KFC is much nicer than the 4 lights chicken, grease and all, but if you could mix both of them together, that would be great.

I am a fan of the four lights, definitely, but there is better out there.

    McDonalds

Has to be either Borza or the 4 lights tbh.

Mollys do lovely chips, fairly greasy but really tasty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,032 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Probably P Borza (except for their fried chicken, which in my experience, was absolutely awful. And I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt by having it a few times... always overly greasy and terrible).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,390 ✭✭✭The Big Red Button

Happy Eater wins, by a mile!

However Four Lights is always good for after a night out. Handier for walking to too.

Also, the Picnic Basket in Ballymote is great for a hangover cure!

I'm not a fan of Mollys or Best, and have yet to try Borzas. Is it really that good?

Edit: Now I am starving! :(

Borza and mollys chip are nearly the same only borza has less greese
4 lights are my favourite tho

Four lights although the curry in the miserable bastard eater is lovely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

    Borza. Cod and chips.

    /what time do they close?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭fozzle

On a Sunday? about 12 I think (could be an utter lie).

I get a craving for 4 lights chicken, I loves it.

Outside of Sligo, in Ballymote, you will not get a bigger feed than in Picnic Basket. Any man that leaves there hungry must have hollow legs!

Dominicos in Ballymote can be lovely, but it can also be poor enough, I have been given cold food there at times.

    4 Lights
    ........
    Daylight
    .........
    Molly's
    Happy Eater

4 Lights is the best all round imo, but a bag of Molly's chips with salt and vinegar is hard to beat when your cold and hungry this weather. Reading this I realise I've not tried many of the newer places. A bit of a traditionalist me:)

    Chips - Borza
    Chicken - KFC
    Burgers- Mollys
    Curry - Mollys
    Pizza - Dominicos

    Everything together - 4 lights :)

On the Mail Coach Road just down the road a bit opposite Caheneys

borza for me - the battered sausage and chips for 4.20 is the best value meal in town - delish.
Was not very impressed with surf and turf on my first visit - prawns in a burger just dont work

Actually the battered mars bar from Borza isn't too bad. I've had it twice and I'm still alive for now at least

    borza
    happy eater
    4 lights

I ate there once & it was f*cking rank.. then again, I'm not a big fan of chippers in general.

Borza for it's cod and chips is probably my favourite of the current lot with the 4 lights after that.

Tbh I think the standard of chippers in Sligo has been pretty dismal the past ten years or so.

I remember when the chips from Molly's were fantastic, not anymore. On the nostalgic tip I really miss the Cafolla (sp?). Going in there on the occasional saturday as a child with my mum and dad was always a treat.

    Love Happy Eater chips.

Don't get the fascination with the 4 lights to be honest. Everyone seems to love it after a night out. A prime example of alcohol numbing the tastebuds ;)

Mail Coach Road I think? Travelling away from town, its on the right hand side just after the traffic lights (the ones that come AFTER the cathedral/Hawk's Well).

Or at least thats where it was last time I looked ;)

Can't go wrong with a Curry Coleslaw and a Big 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

Curry Coleslaw sounds grim. Yet strangely interesting...

Borza are on Mail Coach Road, just up from the Mace garage, on the same side. They deliver for a couple of euro though.

Raffaeles in Tubbercurry is freakin' awesome.

Don't eat a huge deal in chippers but definitely Borza #1.
and the old mollys, not a fan of the new one
Second that, very poor in comparision.

But I miss Ephesious, now a cafe type restaurant down the road from the nightclub in Teeling St., used to have great kebabs & huge portions.

I know I've eaten in that Ephesious place before but I have no idea where it is, it's not Cafe Society now is it?

I haven't lived in Sligo for about 3 years, but I did live in Crozon for a while and Borza was the nearest chipper. Never liked it and always felt like I needed a shower after eating from there. Can't believe there's so many here biggin' it up.

I personally always liked the big4s in 4lights and Fish and chips from Happy Eater and Greasy Mollys and the kebabs from Ephesus.

I've just eaten from the 4 Lights. It was grim. And I was overcharged.

Then it was just a simple mistake by the person on the till, no need to tell the world is there

Should I keep it a secret?

It was a delivery - I had to ring to point it out. Pain in the a*se, but I did it. Order was wrong, and over-charged, not the best of service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

Oh, they do have rather snazzy white boxes for the deliveries though.

I thought I was getting a kidney it was so posh. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,032 ✭✭✭✭Basq

4 Lights.. aka the most unsubstantial take-away you'll ever get. You might as well eat the box.. there's probably more meat in that!

Get Surf N Turf.. now that's a burger!

I agree, I've just never seen the appeal to the 4 Lights. Chips are crap, and always cold. At least with Borza you think there might be a bit of potato in them.

I had chicken from 4 Lights tonight. I am NEVER eating chicken again. From anywhere.
