Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Found 2 new ones in Castletroy, Limerick today. Added to the map.

One of them is across the road from the Hawthorns cab, just in beside the McDonalds drive through.

Seen KN Network working on Mountview Road this morning on behalf of Eircom. Assume they are starting to upgrade that area.

They were at the Blanch Rd end yesterday with their big reel of orange yumminess. :)
There also appears to be work done at Sheepmoor entrance - there were 'on behalf of eircom' signs on some pavement replacement there. I did the loop from Sheepmoor around to Mountview Rd yesterday and counted eight old cabs easily visible along the way - shouldn't be long before we see new cabs along there.

Has anyone heard when Tralee will get the faster speeds?

All the work is finished and I have seen a few of those green cabinets around the town.

Nobody in Tralee has mapped a sausage yet, any chance you can help then???

Use Yahoo maps if you must.

    http://maps.yahoo.com/

Double click in to the precise spot where cab is and copy the entire link up top in a post here. Giz as many as you have. Looks like so.

They are very close to eachother!. The second is at the "Y" in "Quay". The first would be near the "D" in Dingle. Next to Kerry Group HQ if anyone knows the area.

err.. in the "Final" map of cabs all the arklow cabinets are titled "ALW" despite our excahnge code being "AKW" AFAIK

also, are we meant to be mapping the green ones with the crosshatch pattern with the extension boxes on top? Because I've seen two of those iirc

I'll fix those codes. Do not map the cabinets shown on the left ( with or without a crosshatch) in the first post. They are double doored and contain cables.

These are the ones I could see in Tralee. I imagine a fair few are in estates that are harder to find.

A great week for mapping and the mapping effort overall has been finding the cabs faster than eircom can install them. However we have a big Problem with south and west Dublin excepting the very SE of the County from Bray to Dalkey and into Deans Grange ( not Foxrock) and down to Loughlinstown which is excellently mapped.

    Ballyboden/Knocklyon area ( D16 ) . NOTHING.

Tallaght up to Palmerstown into Chapelizod along over to Kilmainham and the Liberties/Rialto/Dolphins Barn area ( Very Very Little :( )
    Dun Laoghaire/Monkstown/Sandycove ( not much)
Nutley( Stillorgan to Donnybrook) Beggars Bush ( Sandymount Ballsbridge) and Rathmines ( Ranelagh and Rathmines) are very thin and many marks are planning notices with feck all actual installs. The cabinets may be in lanes and mews in those areas not on Main Roads.

As the weather looks warm and nice for the next while I BESEECH of all Boardsies in those South and West Dublin areas identified above to locate and map cabinets.

Bray is crap as well. :)

The Northside (on the other hand) is nearly complete and veritable swarms of mappers are on the case from Clonee on the Meath Border to Ashbourne to its north to Balbriggan and right the way in to Clontarf.

My thanks to the mappers in North Dublin (City and County both) who have done a simply fantastic job so far.

Final point is Crown Alley. While it should be done by now I would expect most assets are hidden underground in foot tunnels and I would not expect overground (mappable) works anywhere bar down the Georges Quay area to Hanover Quay and over to Pearse St ish perhaps if someone could look in that area.

And thanks to all around the country who have responded to my specific requests and are on the prowl in their own areas particularly those in Kilkenny and Tralee who stepped right up when asked.

Mullingar and Letterkenny and Sligo were as good as finished weeks ago and reports are coming in from all over of cabinetage spotted etc.

I'll have a special Google Spreadsheet mapping progress metrics tracker ready by Sunday so you can see progress in one place. It is not quite ready yet but it will answer a lot of simple questions.

Mapping instructions in Post Number 1 in this thread as always.

    TTFN

Wexford has nothing mapped either, which is surprising since they have had fibre there for over a year.

Brand spanking new cabinet being lowered onto the plinth at the top of Forge Hill in Cork earlier, added that just there and a new one by the base of Forge hill a few days ago. Seems a bit far out to be still serviced by Quaker Road but they're within the boundary map!

In my passings through Tallaght, Rathmines, Ranelagh and all of Pearse st and some side streets and I've seen none so far. Crown Alley appears to be badly behind schedule.

Also, did some looking through Drogheda. It's moving suprisingly slowly considering the number of posters from Drogheda on the subject. I added a handful of VDSL cabs over the last couple of days. There are still quite a number of "new" cable cabs or cabinets with extensions on the top, which have had no VDSL cabinets fitted nor any sign of civils or marking for placement. Considering Drogheda is Phase 1, I would have added VDSL cabs if they hadn't been installed just yet but there's no sign of any extra groundworks in at least 5 cases I know of.

It seems like Droghea Borough Council are picky on where cabinets can be installed and in what setting...

If no one else does it before me, I'll take a more detailed look out the Dun Laoghaire/Monkstown/Sandycove direction next weekend.

I think Dublin Corporation is being very uncooperative, lots of planning notices for Beggars Bush which really should be finished by now. Phase III Easter. Rathmines is end year.

These are not the ugliest street cabinatage of all time. Crown Alley is probably underground in the main in chambers ( if they have power) and if not its FTTP or nothing so it may have slipped back while they plan FTTP if they cannot run racks in the chambers. I dunno TBH what is happening but nothing in sight does not mean nothing done ....certainly in West D2 where Crown Alley coverage is centred around Westmoreland St and south of the River.

One at the corner of Friar St and Evergreen St in Cork if someone wants to map it for me as im on my phone. Against the wall inside the curved pedestrian barrier between those two roads. QKR1 052A

I've seen KN and eircom work on civils in the Crown Alley area, fibre blowing equipment included but I've seen those manholes and access ducts, they're not going to fit anything like a cabinet. Anyway, there are plenty of cabinets at street level in that exchange area so presumably the VDSL cabs will be installed above ground also.

Given the ventilation and access needs (e.g. do specialised eircom staff need to get into these tunnels or can any linesman do it?) for these cabinets, I cannot imagine any of them will ever be placed in anything but the most cavernous chambers.

If the numbers on cabs are right, CRA has at least over 100 cross connect points. I presume not all of these would be cabinets but most of them would be. There's a good number of cabinets marked CRA in the south inner city and parts of the northside.

Harold's Cross is all planning notices. The one I stopped to look at was dated 25th March.

Nothing happening with the cabinets in Kimmage, that I can find.
Correction: A few planning notices in place around the Fortfield/Ravensdale area.

Cabinet spotted and mapped on Templeville Road.

Hey there, spotted a new-looking cab in the Ballinacurra part of Midleton this morning. 51.894265,-8.16591

It's alongside the typical chevron double-doors cab, and has the distinctive big lock-hinge. You can see the old cab on Google streetview. Would appreciate if someone could add it to the map as I'm not sure what exchange etc it is connected to. Thanks.

Related query: fibre ducting was recently laid up to the entrance to my housing estate and they've spraypainted an "E" with an arrow pointing towards a large gray plastic cabinet (single door) a few metres away behind the border wall of the estate. Does the "e" stand for efibre, ESB, or what? And is the plastic gray cabinet an eircom cable cabinet or something else?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

It is connected to Midleton. Could someone check Glanmire as I would expect that is showning Cabinets too and surely Carrigaline and Cobh have more cabinets than the few mapped so far. :)

This cabinet is Crown Alley, not DBN. Haven't seen any on the Dolphins Barn exchange yet.

A cable cab ( left picture on post one) has no electronics at all.

It is the point where eircom break "E(xchange) Side" 300 pair cables into D Side ( customer ) 100 pairs to your estate across the road and 100 pairs along the road and 100 pairs to the estate beside it.

It is the nearest point to YOUR house where they can pick up the 200 customers they need to fill the VDSL cabinet, after that they can only put 100 customers onto a 200 port cabinet..logically. :)

There Cable Cabs we have in my estate and Belmount ,not ASDL, my mistake, although the VDSL cab went in this morning just outside Belmount,

I really hope I am not being ran from that , will leave me 700-800mtrs from it !

Hey guys, just came across this while looking for info on eircoms fibre roll out,in Aylesbury in tallaght there are at least 5 of these new cabinets installed and another 3/4 on the old brawn road. The ones near my house are a couple of hundred meters away so I assume my area is ready to go soon.

Got a few more marked on Belcamp, but there are still more hidden that i just haven't spotted yet.

Ya! but you never told us where they are or mapped them did you. :D

Use the "Yahoo Map" technique described about 15 posts back and we'll get them into the main map for ya. :)

As we get further into this you will notice the Add a cab map is now on page 5 and getting longer.

Exchanges end up grouped for clarity and EG Arklow is on page 1 and Shantalla on Page 2 and Drogheda on page 3 of the map.

So here is how to drop in a cab for an exchange with lots of cabs already.

    1. Go to the page containing 'your exchange'
    2. Click edit. Add the cabs
    3. They will be down at the bottom of that page. Click on them and drag them up to the right place and drop them there.

As long as you move them off the bottom of the page BEFORE you click DONE they will stay on the right page.

If you simply add cabs and press done they are automatically shoved in at the very end and have to be dragged around the place afterwards. It works but it creates work.

    Many thanks. :)

Spongebob, i have noticed some cabs with planning permission notices on them, will i add them or just wait for work to start?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

Make sure you put the phrase (planning) in the description as it indicates a revisit will be required by a mapper in future.

So far all we have for Nutley, Beggars Bush, Whitehall and Rathmines is (planning) :( entries and some were supposed to be done by now so I am easy as long as it is perfectly clear. Many thanks.

There are cabinets marked on the map near Cabra in Dublin which have had nothing except some subducting installed in a nearby manhole. I checked one out yesterday by myself. One isn't even marked as planned in the title.

Can people please at least indicate that they're not installed yet, especially for Phase 4 exchanges like Cabra??? I wouldn't mind if the exchange was due to be up and running already but there's nothing to say that these cabinets will be switched on in the next few months even:(

I could have added 20 or so cabinets in the Dublin 7 area but some spray paint on the ground does not a cabinet make! Especially when exchanges like Cabra (phase 4) or Phibsboro (phase 5 I think).

Right, this is a few I spotted around Ennis that's not on the map, plus the 2 Spongebob told someone to check out. Looking at the current Ennis map, I think there's a few mistakes, markers on wrong spots and old cabs identified as new VDSL ones. I'll do another reccy later today. Really don't feel like working!

Brilliant Georgie. 2 of those are allegedly 2014 exchanges and are evidently already complete.

Cteseleh has promised to check the tagging for me which should indicate the launch date more accurately ( along with one in SW Ennis which is already mapped). Obviously they are physically complete.

Make sure you put the phrase (planning) in the description as it indicates a revisit will be required by a mapper in future.

Ah yeah, I'll make sure to update them as they come up.

They will inform you when your area goes live. There is an expression of interest form on the E-Fibre website:

I think some people have put in old style boxes as points
For example the one in donnycarney looks old

    Coolock CLK Donnycarney Cabinet
VDSL Cabinet located on Elm Road

The new unit can be 20-30m away from the old one it is tied to...behind a hedge or around a corner. Are you absolutely sure there is no VDSL cab nearby????

This is the case for the VDSL cabinet at Whitethorn Park, Drogheda. The old cabinet is hidden in the bushes across the main road (totally separate from the estate).

Our mappers are hunters in many cases. However most cabs are beside cable cabs buts sometimes space is tight on a pavement, etc.

That example is different as the cabinet in question was of the old style like the one photographed on Elm Road in Donnycarney, Dublin (above) and had a standard green "high security" cabinet installed before the VDSL2 cabinet was installed nearby. All the cabinets in Drogheda have had new "high security" replacement cabinets installed before VDSL2 cabinets were installed alongside.

Would I be right in saying this applies nationally or does the donnycarney example show older cabinets with VDSL2 fitted alongside?

Also, I'm not sure but I don't think Whitethorn park is even served by DBC 027. I think it's served by DBC 012 beside the petrol station.

DBC 027 is inside Whitethorn Park. I'm confused at what you are trying to say above.

The VDSL2 cabinet is, the original copper-only cabinet was and is located on the old N1 for many years before Whitethorn park was built. I'm also pretty sure that a second copper high-security cabinet was built beside McCabe's garage (at the time) when Whitethorn Park was built. I think DBC 012 serves Whitethorn Park.
