Haha, the amount of problems that FIFA is running into these days is unreal. First the continuing Loot Box/gambling thing, now this.

    Die Fifa.

Back to the PES days of Van Mistelroum, Roberto Larcos and Naldorinho.

Weirdly I miss that. Genuinely. The more sports games - football especially - drifted into trying to recreate the TV experience exactly, the more I drifted away. Bring back International Superstar Soccer damnit (I know it's a precursor to PES)

That and sensible soccer are the only soccer games I've liked.

Loved the older nhl and madden games before it got boring. I remember when sports games were fun rather than just feeling like rolling a roulette wheel and having the most licenses.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,294 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

I still play Sensible Soccer now. It's a brilliant game although it's far too easy now since I've played it so much.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,847 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

People want licenses though and don't care how much fun the actual game is. I'm actually baffled people will play multiplayer fifa, it's just a game I find absolutely no joy in since I'm removed from the actual football fandom and only looking at it as a fun game. I could just be approaching them wrong, Kat Bailey is a massive RPG nerd but loves sports and sees Fifa and Madden as RPGs were you play around with the stats and the matches are basically pokemon battles for her.

You could see it with the utter failure of the NBA Jam game from a few years ago. Brilliant game but people just didn't want something fun that wasn't trying to ape the actual sport.

I remember playing ISS on the N64, the commentators were great craic.

Best storytelling and studio as well.

Whatever about awful writing being awarded the second one really irks me. A studio that treats its employees as badly as naughty dog should be no where near that award.

No specific date. The original announcement said 2021 so factoring in pandemic-related delays, likely towards the end of the year, perhaps even pushing into 2022.

Apparently SwuareEnix has yet to recoup its development costs from sales of the Avengers game. Oof. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with that IP.

I'm sure it's not in the same ballpark as Spirits Within when it comes to financial disasters for Square but it is at the very least surely the next worst thing they've managed since the original FFXIV.

Which they eventually turned around into a brilliant game which probably made much more back than they lost, I don't see that happening with Avengers. Not sure anybody much cares about Marvel Avengers nowadays, not to the same fervour anyway

He left Bioware before and came back to tidy up Anthem.....he always seemed checked out talking about Anthem or maybe he knew what was going on. The other guy worked on Dragon Age Origins and most of the bad stuff that followed that the last few years.
With Bioware being what it is now I'd have given any new Mass Effect to a new team with some fresh ideas as it truly needs that. Not sure EA is the place to do that but story driven RPG's badly need a facelift.

Trying to get back to the old bioware can't happen as its gone. Muzyka and Zeschuk left 8 years ago, any sense of direction kinda left with them. Maybe that startup by ex Bioware devs (Archetype Entertainment) might yield something elsewhere but that old Bioware were gone long before today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Casey Hudson came back as general manager though which is a very different role, and as for Mark Darrah and the dragon age games they were good they just weren't as good as they could have been. Inquisition turned out well, especially when you consider how andromeda ended up.

Bioware went on a hire spree for andromeda including a lot of leading roles, it's the main reason they were promoting so hard that the next one was going back to the veterans. So I doubt EA or Bioware higher ups would be too thrilled by a new team with fresh ideas.

It came out too far from the release of the final film, and it doesn't help matters at all that the look of the characters is more akin to the porn parody than the actual actors who played them. I know there are likely myriad reasons for why they couldnt create virtual representations of Robert Downey Jr etc. but the look they settled on always felt off to me.

Take fortnites recent marvel event, they leaned into the classic comics look of characters like wolverine, presented in a cartoony style, which is much more easily digested when not trying to follow the look of the movies.

Plus it was boring as ****. I only played the beta first 2 missions and couldn't wait for it to end and i ****ing love marvel. Devs spent too much money on the license and thought the only way they make it back was with mtx. Going that route, they should have made it like a dc universe game but they thought a slap of paint with models that look like the film but not enough to get sued and an awful new hero content purchase pack.

I don't think this would even be saved if it went free to play with just how boring the gameplay mechanics are.

Even if they introduced a few different enemy types into the game it'd make the gameplay better. There is a decent enough gameplay layer there, but everything else is so bland and repetitive that it never gets a chance to shine.

I had honestly forgotten there was even a MSG film planned: hard to know what to feel about this, given the series is already famous for its desperation to be "cinematic". Ostensibly it makes a better fit for adaptation than most game-movies. And I was about to sniff a dismissal towards it, but Jason Vogt-Roberts is an OK director (in fact I'd go so far as to call Kong: Skull Island a guilty pleasure and more enjoyable than it could have otherwise been).

Is Hayter a good actor (not just voice). I would assume not, based on his filmography. I never understand people wanting casting based on look or voice rather than an actors ability to actually act the part.

Oscar Isaac is a very good actor, imo. and I also don't think his look is miles off either, so i don't get the criticism from that side either.

The only voice actor I could have seen playing a good version of their character in a film would have been Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher but he's too old to play the role at this stage. Has genuine acting chops .

Metal Gear Solid like a film based on a Rockstar game doesn't make sense to me when the games stories are just amalgamations of scenes from much better films.

It entirely depends on what version of MSG is being looked for here: the sanctimonious, first-year politics undergraduate polemic, or the goofy OTT spy thriller with giant robots and melodramtic antagonists.

The latter would be eminently more watchable than the former, and Vogt-Roberts seems like the director who might be asked to do the latter - if he's allowed to. I suspect there's a very real risk of "creative differences" if Kojima is allowed any kinda of input. In fact I'd nearly put money on Vogt-Roberts walking at some point in this production.

No fear of Kojima having a say. Konami own the franchise and Kojima isn't with them anymore.

And from hearing about Jeremy Blaustein working with Kojima, he would be a complete disaster if he had a say.

Ah yes, of course. Completely forgot about the Konami-Kojima split. Well, that's small mercies then, though would still wonder as to what kind of film Konami or the studio might ask for here. It's a deeply schizophrenic franchise.

Given how corporate and artistically bankrupt Konami have become I'm guessing their only stipulation is they make money from it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,188 ✭✭✭McFly85

I just hope they stay true to the source material and have 70% of the film be exposition through codec. The rest can be snake fighting giant robots while trying to find a CD case with Meryls frequency on it

Featuring Dwayne Johnson as Solid Snake. Justin Bieber as Raiden. Peter Stormare as Liquid Ocelot. And, Charlize Theron as The Boss!

    Or something like that.

    RTX 2080 minimum?

I mean, being a VR title drastically limits its commercial potential in the first place. But I think that GPU requirement makes it next level niche!

A 2080 for minimum reqs? How many people have a VR headset and 2080 or better card, and on top of that the 340 gb space required.

No way I would bother buying a new Graphics card to run this.

I guess I will give this a look whenever I get around to upgrading my PC in 2 or 3 years, or if there is a PS VR 2 version or something.

Also, min req of a Intel i7 9700K (which I actually have), is also pretty nuts.

A game coming out next year requiring last years high end isn't particularly batty. This sort of thing used always happen back in the day. I mean I see people benchmarking machines with Rise of the Tomb Raider and stuff like that it's time we had a few more games nothing can run at high settings. 1T and 2T SSD drives are getting cheaper all the time.

edit: looked at some gameplay on Youtube there. It doesn't look THAT good.

Half Life Alyx looks far better than it and doesn't require anywhere near the level of hardware.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is very scalable.

    These are MINIMUM requirements!

Mostly because it's a buggy mess atm, from what I've read/seen it is riddled with more than just slight bugs. Reviewers are reporting multiple cloned NPC, NPC bugging out completely or randomly appearing, some of them repeating their lines over and over out of conteext - also numerous graphical glicthes besides. There's no way any solid reviewer will score it higher in it's current state - I'm waiting to see if they ptch it again soon that's for sure - looks like day 1 patch doesn't fix things

Only in the gaming world would a 7 out of 10 be considered "bad". TBH without sounding like a rubbernecker I've always assumed Cyberpunk was going to underwhelm, the breathless anticipation almost impossible to match with reality.

    Here's a trailer for "new (by which they mean, available now) and upcoming" games on PS5. It has a few snippets about console exclusivity, for those that care;

Deathloop and Ghostwire will console exclusives for at least 12 months.
Project Athia will be a console exclusive for at least 24 months.
Godfall is a console exclusive for at least 6 months.
All the above will be coming to PC too, at the same time as PS5.

Horizon FW, Ratchet and Clank, and GT7 are still being touted as 2021 releases.
