Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This woman clearly hasnt gone through the mental health system.

If it was that simple nobody would die by suicide.

It's like saying if you have cancer then you wont die if you see a cancer specialist.

She might not be too popular.

She has plenty not to be popular about.

I knew a young lad, 23yo, who committed suicide. When I spoke to his mother the first thing she said was "How could he do this to us?".
    I was disgusted!
I wouldn't blame her for the initial anger, it's part of grief, but I'm pretty sure that eventually passed. I hope so. Lifelong anger is a grim pit to fall into.

Lets see how many people bereaved by suicide in their nuclear family will call those people "selfish" and "thoughtless" on today's programme? I imagine most of that brigade, like Catherine, will have very limited experience.

Thankfully ive no direct experience of mental illness but this one hasnt a clue. I dont know how the other caller can keep their calm, sure with the opinion that a walk would cure them what hope do they have in this one's view.

How is this conversation helping anyone?
I wonder could saying "it takes tremendous courage to take your own life" have ticked a box for someone listening and edged them nearer to the rope or to the river

Is writing an article calling tham thoughtless and selfish going to stop them?
Nobody knows everyone is different... Who knows only the person themselves what could tipp the balance towards taking that final drastic step

Katie, like Duffy is not capable or qualified to talk about this subject.

neither are most of the callers

I decided last night to give up the demon drink. This could be a short lived hiatus. :)

I don't think that airing this stuff on the radio is going to make any difference to the rate of suicide. It might even be counter-productive.

I dont want to make this about me...but I'll tell you anyway ;)

I hope Catherine gets a serious dose of vaginal thrush. One that lasts a good 6 weeks. What are you complaining about Catherine? There's treatment available.

I can understand if it was a conversation that was constructive.

Quoting and writing newspaper articles that suggest that people are thoughtless or selfish is completely unhelpful.

    Finally someone qualified to speak.

Bear in mind Catherine, that the medication might never work, and the public health system doesn't have enough resources to be effective, so you'll probably have to pay for your own treatment -- but the important thing is that it is theoretically possible.

As Joe would say "A slew of calls came in".

    Thats quite enough of that.

I'd rather do my tax return than listen to anymore of that.

Catherine and her well thought out argument of "I just agree with the article and thats that".

Where's Brush Shiels when you need him to inject some "comedy" into the day?

His experiences of sewerside is too raw for Katie.

The cynic in me says that man was cut off deliberately by RTE.

Katie doesn't like to hear what actually happened?

She'd rather have it dressed up in flowery language that doesn't cause offence.

Of course he was. He was getting to the point. RTE can't be having that.

It matters not a bit whether we address it or don't address it. Some people will still commit suicide; it has always been the case and always will.
I've heard it discussed many times in the media. Many government agencies and charities have been set up. There have been advertising campaigns.
It has made no difference. Anyone who is determined to commit suicide will do so. It is a sad fact of life.

I felt the same. It's hard enough to discuss these things without someone trying to shut you up.

The cynic in me says that man was cut off deliberately by RTE.
It was he who was saying he had a bad line, not KH though.

I don't think Katie was asking him not to say 'hanging' per se, I think she was wary of him going beyond that and getting into further detail.

There are probably people listening to this who are very distressed and may have even found their own loved ones. I can see where she's coming from. It's the exact opposite to what Joe would have done.

listening to this is not going to make anyone anyway better anyway !
