Pray tell that this does not yield frequent showers of graupel. Snow please!

Saturday still showing potential for Convective weather under the passage of an upper trough and associated cold pool. Lapse rates should be half decent and with good sunny spells expected diurnal heating should aid convection. Models showing outbreak of heavy wintry showers with hail as the day progresses, peaking in the afternoon. Not a lot of shear available so if thunderstorms do break out will probably be pulse like and short lived. Will see.

Yes as low as 516 decametre heights, at this point downgrades are going to be limited. So this cold spell is locked in and will probably yield frequent showers of graupel/snow.

Sat still holding firm on convective potential leading to widespread showers some heavy and of hail and potential for thunderstorms quite widespread also I reckon. Would have thought that Sat could be the most active day over Ireland in some time. Cold air aloft coincides with peak diurnal heating, Lapse rates fairly decent, what is lacking is DLS so probably nothing too explosive or long lasting, more pulse like ? Showers and activity look to decrease early evening. Mix of wintry showers and becoming very cold leading to widespread frosts after dark. Snow and hail on higher elevations leading to snowcapped mountains which should be spectacular Sun morning.

Just looking at Met.ie and they are warning of thunder tomorrow too, is there much of a risk ?

I wonder if there was a lightning strike. The wind sensor at Runway 27 (so the easterly end of the runway, visible in the first camera link above) went offline at 09:26Z this morning.
RWY 27 WIND SENSOR OUT OF SERVICE. ALL READINGS WILL BE GIVEN FROM THE RWY 09 SENSOR.

Some moderate convection in North Kildare this afternoon

A clearly defined convergence zone as well down along the Irish sea in the early hours of Sun morning, MUCAPE readings quite low but might produce some heavy showers and hail/ wintry showers possible too along the E coasts maybe the odd flash out to sea.

Bit of a bust regarding lightning today, some overnight and late afternoon / early evening, a few more showed up in Wexford in Blitzortung.

Mostly sunshine here near Tralee, cloud size increased in the afternoon, got a wintry sleet shower and one big hail shower, mountains have signs of white on them.

Attended the TORRO conference online yesterday, very interesting day. One of the highlights was this case study by Dan Holly of Weatherquest, very detailed look at the parameters that gave extreme thunderstorms and rainfall in Norfolk last year, well worth a watch, top class presentation.

Cold air aloft over the coming days coinciding with peak diurnal heating and a certain amount of shear giving the opportunity for Convective weather. Tues and Thurs look like the best chance of some sparks but low enough risk atm would think. Met Eireann adding the risk of hail also those two days. A departure from the very settled weather of late. Rain is probably well needed at this stage on the land, just 18.5mm here in Kerry this month so far and just 0.2mm in the last 6 days. Very hit and miss with this kind of rainfall though , a few places getting a drenching and others getting very little.

Real heavy shower here (Tuam) about this time and really looked like a touch down was going to occur at it moved in.

Big heavy convective showers tomorrow and will see if any produce hail and lightning , would reckon it needs enough sunny breaks for surface heating to get Convection proper going. Very cold upper pool of air and troughs slow moving across the country, not much lower shear available but some Deep layer shear, more then Tuesday. Much more moisture available in the atmosphere tomorrow so some places could get a fair drenching whilst a lot of areas will receive little or any rain. A couple of hundred J/kg available at times, best chance of any lightning would be in the afternoon, some places locally could get 5 to 10mm rainfall , possibly in a short amount of time. Met Eireann did mention threat of localized surface flooding in the forecast after the news tonight.

Very disappointing today for Thunder at Lunch time in Galway sky was pitch black but nothing happened just heavy rain

Just a few strikes recorded today , not enough shear or convergence it would seem even though there was good cold uppers. Risk of hail and thunderstorms again on the forecast tomorrow. More Deep Layer Shear available but uppers a bit less cold and lapse rates not as good as today ,low chance of an isolated thundery shower more so the Southern half of the country I reckon.

Showers feeding down on a Northerly flow over the next few days convective in nature over land producing some heavy showers with the risk of hail and thunderstorms, more so in the Northern half of the country. Best chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon during peak diurnal heating. Nice bit of Deep Layer Shear showing up on the charts for Weds.

Yes I repeat actually big thick flakes of snow

Sunday looks interesting with the low quite close to the country and quite breezy if not windy overland from the SW / S with bands of quick moving showers moving up over the country, probably an occluded front also. Milder then of late with more humidity. Lots of low level and deep layer shear available with the jet overhead by then. Cooler uppers and the strong sun probably kicking off convection leading to some heavy blustery shower's with hail and lightning a possibility, more so in the Western half of the country . Charts will change a bit but looking decent for convection. An interest to see what comes of the set up.

The northwest looks very good for convective showers Sunday Afternoon with heavy downpours, Isolated Thunderstorms, hail and flooding. First storm chase of the season.

    Day 2 Convective Outlook
    VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 09 May 2021 - 05:59 UTC Mon 10 May 2021

    ISSUED 21:03 UTC Sat 08 May 2021

    ISSUED BY: Dan

The broad upper pattern on Sunday sees a longwave trough to the west of Europe, with a strong southwesterly flow on its forward side. This will encourage advection of a warm, moist airmass from southwest to central Europe with time. A surface low will remain just to the west of Ireland, while a quasi-stationary cold front will straddle central Britain before finally clearing eastwards to the North Sea on Sunday night.

... SUNDAY AFTERNOON: IRELAND / NORTHERN IRELAND / SCOTLAND ...
A rather messy evolution with various occlusions bringing areas of cloud and showery outbreaks of rain northwards at times. However, if sufficient cloud breaks / insolation can aid diurnal heating, then several hundred J/kg CAPE (moreso NW Ireland) is possible. Convective overturning with time will likely aid the development of deeper convection, in an environment with 30-40kts 0-6km bulk shear. This will, in theory, be supportive of organised convection, with a couple of cells perhaps exhibiting supercellular characteristics. The main focus is primarily Ireland where conditions overall will be more favourable - deeper convection, backed low-level winds etc - whereas convection in Scotland will likely be a little shallower in height. As such, if an organised storm can develop it may pose the threat of hail 1.5-2.0cm in diameter - however, have refrained from introducing a SVR given low confidence on sufficient surface heating etc.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,069 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Will see if sparks are produced tomorrow, will be some very heavy localized showers in the W and NW especially, some possibly producing hail. Best potential looks like the W and NW for thunderstorms. Lots of shear and vorticity available tomorrow , maybe a funnel will be spotted.

I think talk of supercells in the outlook above is a bit ott. Interesting alright in the northwestern half of the country but I doubt if we'll get any reports of supercells or anything like it. They sometimes like to uptalk these events as if they're talking about Kansas and not Killahsandra.

    Maybe they do sometimes.
They are also one of the most active contributors to the forum and their informative and upbeat posting is what draws me and many other regular visitors to the forum. The forum would be a ghost town sometimes without them.
From years of observing their cheerful and enthusiastic posts compared to the frequent snideness of others it's clear who is happier in their own skin.

Edited to retract the last comment, which was made due to misunderstanding who GL was referring to.
