Numerous hail and rain showers here this morning in Tralee, blustery and very dark under the showers, more organized band now falling as sleet/ rain.

400 metre hill to my north has no snow on it, Yet there are hills with snow on them at 800 feet a few miles away? That makes no sense.

Temp here is 3.1c so it should be subzero up there.

I would say it is partly down to the hit and miss nature of showers. Also the situation is so marginal that one hill could get a dusting or a covering due to a heavy shower whereas another just gets a sleety mess. The intensity of a shower can determine whether you get some snow in an extremely marginal situation like this.

Mostly rain this morning, just the odd bit of sleet in heavier bursts. Maybe in the early hours we might get lucky.

    Very odd situation.

The 06Z ECMWF has a narrow front-edge snow line moving southeastwards through the midlands and Leinster this evening/tonight, with rain following behind.

The sounding for Kildare (in the middle of that darkest blue) shows just how marginal it is. A few metres will make a huge difference, with some scope for evaporative cooling, however that narrow window will be moving on all the while. We should see some nice snow for a short while.

How did you get that sounding?

Click on the little balloon icon up beside EZ and then click on a location on the map.

EDIT: It won't work without a paid subscription to Meteologix.

Where are you? I've noticed localised rain/hail/sleet in Derry on a regular basis, you could be driving down the Buncrana road in the rain and suddenly it stops and the ground is dry. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Scalp mountain covered in snow with Eskaheen next to it bare.

I have just ventured out to check what is out there. Never knew such sheer penetrating bitter cold.

At the back the ocean is heaving with white breakers and all the mountain tops are shrouded in dark grey clouds at a uniform level.

    Iced wind piercing clothing.

Weather inimical to human life...Time to load the fire/stove and stay safe.

All precipitation fell as just rain - unless the tops say differently when they emerge

The sun is breaking through now.

    West mayo offshore

Being inland always helps compared to near coastal areas.

a very small chance, most of the showers are breaking up before they get here. Showers may become more organised later but remains to be seen if they will make it into Meath/Dublin etc.

Do they? and why is 'snowing' in inverted commas?

Just stopped, some wet stickiness on bins and oil tanks and that's about it. Snow surprisingly feathery towards end of shower.

Omagh is approximately 80m asl, dew point is around 0.5 to 1c currently It would suggest that was wet snow for sure even at low levels

I'd be hopeful you'll get something with that feature later this evening, early tonight @Gonzo.... You are usually near the end of them showers, they dont usually make it into Dublin but it is possible.

Decent fall of snow here in Galway, albeit on the wet side. Slight accumulation on the grass, shed roof and cars. Nice to watch but just making a mess really.

shower clouds are making it as far as south Meath but there is very little precipitation left in them, have had a few brief seconds of drizzle here and there.
