Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

People often talk about exporters on this thread. To what countries do they export? And is their a particular type of car that's popular for export? Just curious to know!

Toyotas mainly for cars. Especially pre d4d and pre vvti ones but they've now started taking the d4d mk1 avensis as it's getting harder to find older ones.

For a 2.0td avensis anything from €450 to €650+ has been the range of prices I've heard. Myself and my brother had a very rough one but mechanically sound that we exported and got €550 for it kinda regretted it since as they're only getting scarcer.

Low prices are generally paid for petrols however toyota picnics are in big demand and I believe its an eastern european fella that gives nearly €1000 for that generation camry up around Dublin he used to have ads on donedeal.

There were another crowd who wanted Lexus rx300's too.

Basically as a rule of thumb anything jap and diesel from the 90's is in demand whether that be cars vans or 4x4's certain petrol ones too.

    Nice car.
My own experience with the car
I bought the 2003 manual transmission version in 2015 for 650 euro.
    Engine mount need replacing
    alternator failed
ac module I knew that had failed when I bought it
    water pump failed
tiime belt changed as no date on the time belt to say when it was last changed.
I had a lot of issues with battery drain.
after a lot of checking and trips to mechanic it was a boot lid not closing property turning on boot light.
alarm failed for to water and mud getting in to alarm module
Heavy on petrol consumption 33mpg on a good day.
Head light were taking in water and needed to be removed and resealed.
    Steer is heavy.

That said it had the most comfortable seats in any car I have driven.
I liked the 5 cylinder Volvo 2.0 turbo charged engine. 180bhp

I stoped driving the car mostly because I needed a car to put a disabled seat in and the Volvos S60 is not a good car for disabled swivel seat.

    '08 Lancer 1.5 petrol
    NCT August '21
    228k Kms

    Asking €2,150

I had the previous model (mine was '05), found it a very reliable albeit boring car.
Any thoughts on this 1.5 petrol engine and these cars in general.

    Looks very clean indeed.

Never heard anything bad about them, but it could be because they aren't very popular... This model was on sale until 2015 which shows how outdated Mitsubishi is now on their line up these days.

This one looks respectable enough for 08.

Price reflects the condition. Direct competitor would be Mazda3/Focus/s40 and haven't seen one as clean as that Lancer lately.

A family of 4 I know, recently lost everything including car and house in Dublin 4. They used to drive a 192 Mercedes GLE.

They have now gathered/been given 500 euro for a family car with tax and nct.

Would this Honda Stream any good for them? Any other suggestions?

What's the relevance of their previous address and car they drove?

Just a bit of background to what kind of luxuries they're used to. Also to state we're all just one of two pay cheques away from poverty!

How is the Honda Stream linked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Probably an ok, reliable car. Looks like the price has dropped another bit to €400.

Looks like the passenger front wing is damaged, not that you can be too fussy at that price point. It's also a Japanese used import so make sure they can get it insured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,685 ✭✭✭✭wonski

Insurance is the main thing however if they just switch policy then it will probably be OK.

If it is a new private policy then anything over 15 years old could be tricky.

I don't think you can be fussy at that price point, but 500 is a challenge to find something anyway with nct and not damaged, brogen or rough. Very rough.

They sold the Lancer in the likes of Malaysia and other east Asian countries up to recently. To get around the crazy taxes imported cars (new and used) in Malaysia they assembled and sold it with a Proton Inspira badge there. I was over there about 9 years ago and they were very popular, was a bit odd seeing them with a Proton badge though.

I'm after an automatic estate in as low a tax band as possible and around the 2k mark if anyone comes across one.
Definitely with decent NCT and a bit of tax would be a bonus.
    Mondeo or similar.

They’re a great car, the brother had one back in the day.

They’re every bit as good as the Corolla of the day, and better in a lot of areas.

    Yeah. Spotted that one too.
    What had he to say?

He just didn't seem interested Duke. I rang about the Mondeo. I asked him a few basic questions and he wouldn't answer them really, just repeated what was in the ad. Ad says Westmeath but he says he only works in Mullingar but the car is in Edgeworthstown...he's clearly a Dub though.
He also said he had someone coming to view that evening but when I said I could be there around 2 he said he was going to Dublin and wouldn't be back.

Distinctive ads alright but always uses annoying filters on the photos which makes it impossible to make out whether the car is rough or not without downloading and zooming. Like the photo you posted of the Legacy. That damage on the front corner isn't obvious when looking at the ad.

Mabey he's just an odd ball... Doesn't mean their is anything wrong with the car! Just bring a good mechanic with you... Then you won't be long figuring out what's what!

I bought a car from a certain gent in firhouse recently, a pure odd ball! Told me i wasn't interested in buying the car at all, i told him i didn't drive up from Tipp with a roll of 50's in my pocket for the laugh!

5 mins down the road he rings me back and accepts my offer...:D

I hate these small time dealers. I went to see a car a few months ago for my sister, an 05 fiesta priced at 1600 imagine. It was a tidy car but way over priced. I said it to him and he said, "I've been offered full price already by two people". Nearly fell over laughing, why in gods name was the car still for sale.

€1900 is too much for a 15 year old, high-tax, high miler. It might be worth it to a niche Subaru fan with a horse fetish, but that's a pretty narrow market!
