Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Helium escape valve. To release it when you go deep sea diving.

Its a manual helium release valve. It's a feature for compression divers, who spend periods in a pressure chamber breathing oxygen/helium mix, so they can work at greater depths, where oxygen alone becomes poisonous, without dying.

Helium can seap into a watch, and cause the crystal to pop out when the diver is going through decompression. Many watches have an automatic helium valve, but the the one on the seamaster 300 is a manual one that has to be manually unscrewed when decompressing.

Unless you're a saturation diver, I'd leave it closed as the watch is only waterproof to 50m when it's open, and could be easy to forget to close.

Chances are 99.99% of people Will never make use of the valve, but it's still there because watch folk love gadgets and being prepared for they day they will be at extreme depths under water!

Haha! Yes the irony wasn't lost on me, I got it as a gift. Just love it, it is my first watch bar the odd casio as a young lad. I want to supplement it with a De ville if I can in the mid future.

Really it's to charge extra money so people can pretend they dive.

Don't take any notice of me, I'm just jealous, enjoy the watch

Given the love of diving watches around here..does anyone actually dive? I’ve been once or twice and hated it 😂

    I went swimming once.
But I took off my diver before going into the water, ya know, just in case ðŸ˜

I went once years ago, wasn't a fan at the time. I'm moving to Oman in a months time and it is supposed to be one of the best places on Earth to dive. I've no excuse now!

I saw Jaws at a formative age, so no. All I know about the ocean is when you look down into it a thousand eyes are looking up at you from the inky endless blackness wondering if you're edible. :D

I did the PADI open water licence in Borneo, wearing my TAG Heuer Formula 1 Professional Chrono. Two years later, I did the advanced open water licence in Dahab wearing the same watch.

The resin bezel is particularly good at depth, as it still gives a smooth action without being loose.

Apart from a few pleasure dives since, that's as much as I've done.

My SKX009 has only ever been a meter or two below the surface of a French lake.

Yep, happy to say I do :)
Its a lot less now than it used to be when I lived abroad.
Irish water being a bit cold, old age and my impending falling apart :pac:
Have all lessened my opportunity to dive over the last few years and its become more of a holiday event for me now, all my own scuba gear has been sold over the years.

I do like a diver, particulary on a NATO or similar.
I've only owned 2 actual divers, both Citizen.
One was a JP1060, that was a 21st bday present after I'd taken up diving, that was stolen  .
The other is a Titanium JP3050 that still sees service on my wrist at least on a regular basis ;)

Was in the Crescent in Limerick today and noticed that Fields are carrying a range of second hand watches with instant finance available.
Seems to be mainly Tags, with a Nomos and a diamond set Gucci in the window.
Grabbed a quick pic but no time to browse.

I snuck away to get a break and the watches caught my eye.

Called into Kish in Powerscourt today for a gander as I was in Dublin. They had a simply lovely 1955 Omega Seamaster. There were a few 1960s Omega constellations which I tried on but the Seamaster was gorgeous and half the price. I was highly tempted but not this month. How would they be viewed for servicing out of interest?

I recently serviced a 60s Seamaster with Omega via Hartmanns, total cost was €450. This included a replacement crystal, seals, etc. Gorgeous watches imo, very thin on the wrist.

Prices published on his website as well.

An independent will be cheaper than sending to Omega directly. For example, Duncan Potter (Genesis Watch Making) who is one of the watch makers highly regarded by the gang on TZ-UK charges approx £300 for a service on an automatic Omega.

+1 on independent watchmakers. Support them if you can because the Swiss are hellbent on getting rid of them so they can charge even more exorbitant prices for servicing.

I’ve used Swisstec in the U.K. before for a GP and also a late 90s Seamaster. Their price list suggests £350.

    No other connections.

Also if you had to choose Casio or Fossil which would you pick (all other things being equal)?

Casio, 6 times a week and twice on a Sunday.

    Good question.

It is from the touch range if that helps. I cannot imagine it cost more than €300 (was a present) so I would guess quartz

    hey folks,

Last couple of weeks in the US and I'm tempted to pick up a watch before I leave. I would like to get a Seiko - something with a movement approx like the 6r15.. i had an alpinist and sold it but something like that, with a black dial in the vein of an explorer one.. ive been tempted by a few sinn 556a but don't have the budget to stretch to decent used samples.. also have my eye on the two interstellar watches from hamilton.. id like to add a pilots style watch to the collection. I have a 25% discount voucher for macys but they are overpriced on a lot of their stuff...

maybe ill just keep my head down :)

I took delivery of a watch I had lusted after for a year last week, an ingersoll herald. Tried it on and sent it straight back. A beautiful watch but it wasn't nice enough to justify the price. I'd rather keep filling the tank and get an Omega DeVille. That said I have something else winging it's way to me but I'll hold tight until arrives.

TBH I generally work on the cheap as chips principle for NATO straps. I've examined the Omega and Tudor ones and yes they're of better quality, but not nearly enough extra quality at that ridiculous price for a piece of nylon.

That's kind of where I'm approaching the choice from.
If it's ballistic grade nylon it's all much of a muchness apart from branding is what I'm hoping anyway.

Not sure about this watch to be honest - check out the list of old De Ville models at https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/vintage-watches. I can see a few that match the case and dial closely but they all appear to have lumed H&M hands and sweep seconds. Then there are some that appear to match the handset but not the dial - I don't see any pics that match both.

This seems to fit, based on numbering on the watch back:
    https://www.omegawatches.com/watch-omega-de-ville-omega-st-151-0039
No actual picture though and most other close matches seem to be yellow gold.

And thanks for the seller feedback, I've been watching stuff from him for a while and am fairly sure he can be trusted.

It's definitely on my birthday present shortlist, my wife can choose which to get so it's still something of a surprise :D
