Yeah the game is very slow for the first few hours, but as you progress it gets a lot better and more varied.

As for combat, you unlock different fighting styles as you go along and new moves for the fighting styles. It does still stay quite basic, but a lot of fights can get very hectic and enemies start having weapons, and there will be some very tough enemies and bosses throughout.

It definitely takes a while to properly get going in the game, enough to put a lot of people off, and almost put me off too. But it's worth sticking with. The story gets really great as you go along, the side missions are usually fun, and a lot of the mini games are addictive as hell.

Some right oddballs in some of the substories.

I enjoyed Zero much more than Kiwami.

Definitely Zero, great game and it is only €20 or less now seeing as it is in the new budget Hits range.

A steal at those prices, less than 25 quid for 2 excellent games.

Finished Yakuza Kiwami, mostly just wen't though the main story to refresh myself on what happened. It's amazing how much better Yakuza 0 is even purely in terms of the story despite the original Yakuza's story apparently being written by an actual crime novelist.

Kiwami 2 has just shipped for me, looking forward to getting stuck into it tomorrow evening.

Got the digital edition for Kiwami 2 off PSN, can't wait to get stuck in to it tonight. The Dragons PS4 theme that came with it is really cool, love the soundtrack it plays on the home screen.

I'm playing Yakuza 0 at the moment. I'm loving just running around doing side missions. Mr Libido is the greatest game character of all time.

Edit: I stayed up till 6am playing this and got up at 10 to play more. I'm hooked!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,539 ✭✭✭The Specialist

Is it your first time playing the series Temptamperu?

I'm about 5 chapters in to Kiwami 2 now and it's excellent - the hostess club managed to show up and steal my entire Friday night :D

Yeah first time for me. This may be the greatest game i have ever played :)

Kiwami 1 and 2 next so :D I started with 0 too, might now be one of my favourite game series ever.

Finished Kiwami 2 last night, absolutely brilliant game. Still have the Majima chapters to play but will leave them until the weekend. Now just another year or so to wait for Yakuza 3 remastered to get over here :(

You could try the Yakuza Fist of the North Star spin off. The game is out next week and there is a demo available on psn.

Playing Kiwami 1 at the minute. I'm glad I left a decent break between Yakuza 0 and this, as I think you need it, especially with the games essentially being the same maps, shops, many of the same minigames etc.

Not mad about Fist of the North star from what I've seen of it, might give the demo a go though!

I think it's the setting mainly - you will know Kamurocho off by heart by Kiwami 2 :D I did feel a bit of burn out nearing the end of it, but it ramps up so much in the last few chapters it was quickly forgotten (plus it has one of the most kick ass soundtracks to a final boss fight ever). I think 3 changed the setting up too.

I loved Yakuza 0 but I tried Kiwami 1 a year later and couldn't get into it at all, basically because of this. Felt like I was playing essentially the exact same game again only with a less enjoyable story.

I can definitely see what you mean. I think I'm enjoying it well enough though because I know there are fewer things to do in the game, it's shorter, and it's only one character and city compared to Y0's two of each, that in my head I'm almost considering it to be DLC rather than a different game. Plus while I'm dipping in and out of side stuff, I'm mostly just powering through the story, more than I was with Y0.

I played and finished the Yakuza 6 demo the other day but couldn't get into it. I've never played a Yakuza game before but was aware it's a beloved series so wanted to check it out. Don't think it's for me. I like that it's essentially a televison show with short gameplay bits inbetween to get you from one cut scene to another. I also like the inventory/skill system with the different foods you can eat that give you different buffs and upgrades, especially when certain foods are eaten together. Some of the side quests were fun but I really dislike the combat and the way there's a group of thugs on every corner just to help the player get those optional checklist objectives. felt like I was being hounded while just trying to explore the world.
It was a demo though and much of the world was blocked off for this reason so maybe it just works better in context but I won't be getting a Yakuza game any time soon.

Get Yakuza 0, a few cans and free up 3 or 4 hours to give it a lash ;) I would have been on the fence like you about the series before I played 0, absolutely hooked on it now. Demos don't do this series justice.

Playing Yakuza Kiwami 1. Trying to get through the story, but all I want to do is chase Majima around the place.

Me walking round Kamurocho and hearing a faint "Kiryu-channnn"

I've changed my mind on this. F*ck Breaker Majima! You spinny c*nt!

Also, some of the bosses are pure cheap based on how they dodge or block. It's only with Rush (the style I never used in Y0 and am now fully reliant on in YK1) that I can get some hits in and avoid as much damage as possible (though the windows and chances for using Heat moves is ridiculously small). But then when it comes time to use a Climax Heat move, I've to waste time changing to a different style most times to do it. Half the time they've still regen-ed almost as much health as the move makes them lose. I really don't like this mechanic. You should be allowed to use the move in whatever style you want rather than forcing you to switch, or stay fighting in a style you don't want in order to be ready for it.

Since I decided to get AC:Odyssey, I figured I better just plow through the story missions for YK1 and get it out of the way. Thought I'd read there were 16 chapters in the game so presumed it'd take me most of the rest of the week, but it's only 13 and I was on 10 last night anyway, so finished it off last night.

I enjoyed it for what it was. Story and characters weren't as good as Y0, weren't a lot of side activities I was interested in (maybe Y0 was still too fresh in my mind so they just felt like a rehash, plus there were fewer minigames than Y0 anyway), and I'd still have a few complaints about the combat system.

In particular, for the second game in a row, the game screams at you that Dragon style is the most powerful style, yet you barely get to use it. You have to jump through so many hoops in YK1 to make it in any way useful, but by that point you're just so tuned in to your other styles that it's almost pointless trying to get skills for it. I even said at one point I'd focus on doing all the Komaki training and get all those moves, but he then told me he wasn't ready to train me further at that point and come back to him later (and this was maybe Chapter 9 with about 8-10 of his training skills still to try and unlock). And as enjoyable (though oftentimes frustrating) as Majima Everywhere was, the time you'd have to devote to constantly tracking him down, minigames etc to unlock a lot of the skills for the climax of the game outweighed the benefits.

And yet in the final fight, you pretty much definitely have to use Dragon style to be able to do enough damage or use Kiwami heat moves.

I got through it reasonably okay, but compared to Y0, the balance just seemed off. I get that it's a remake rather than a new game like Y0, but I thought they could have adjusted that.

Still though, I'm going to continue working my way through the series, as I still enjoyed the game overall. But definitely going to take a longer break before playing the next one.

Yeah I ended up flying through Kiwami 1, was great but not a patch on Zero, barely used dragon style either. Still need to play Kiwami 2!!

Yeah I played through it man, it is excellent. Much more like 0, loads of stuff to do and the dragon engine is incredible. If you've enjoyed them all so far you will get your moneys worth no problem :)

Kiwami 1 has said coming soon on steam for months now. Still no release date, I may end up caving and getting it on PS4 it's just 0 was so good playing at 144 fps!

I'm about 7 hours in now.
This is directly after completing Yakuza Kiwama 1.
The change in engine is massive. The fight system and overall presentation has massively improved.
Also the story has always been a really strong point but so far this is probably the best build up and acting I've seen in the Yakuza series.
Early days but the change in engine has had a massive impact in a positive way.

Just picked up Kiwami 2 in Gamestop for 30 quid. Happy Christmas to me!

Finished chapter 1 of Kiwami 2 and I love it already. I was planning on playing AC Odyssey as my go to game over Christmas but I'm all in with this now.

Sidenote, this is my 4th Yakuza game after Zero, 1 and 6. I thought I couldn't be surprised anymore with weird mini games and then I discover Toylets..... :Pac:

I'm near the end of chapter 13 of Kuwami 2.
One of the best games this year IMO

    I've not played 6 yet

Only on chapter 4 but yupp, one of my games of the year as well. Too early to tell if it tops 6 though. I will definitely have to give fist of the North Star a go in 2019.

Each Yakuza game has had a moment (or multiple) where if my missus walked in the room, I wouldn't be able to explain what was happening on the telly. The naked photography session was such a moment :D

Finished Kiwami last night. Great story and all but not as polished as Zero (understandably so). Found the boss fights to be a chore for the most part with the exception of the last fight which was enjoyable and seemed fair unlike the other bosses towards the end of the game.

Picked up 6 in the sale and looking forward to seeing what the new engine looks like. Anyone know if I need to play Kiwami 2 before 6 or does it have any hugh impact story-wise if I do 6 first? I'm not sure how much of a link there is between events seeing as there are a few games in between that I won't get to play either way.

If you are following the story so far then yeah, there will be a big jump between Kiwami 2 and 6 in terms of story and characters. I'm resisting the urge to buy 6 myself as they are remastering 3-5 at the moment and we will get them eventually (Kiwami 2 will also give you a good look at the Dragon engine used in 6 and it's a savage game as well).

I'd prefer to do Kiwami 2 first but its full price at the moment. Its a pity they didn't release remakes in sequence. Realistically it'll be a few weeks before I get started into 6 anyway so kiwami 2 might be on sale in the meantime, if not I reckon I'll just plough on.

Kiwami 2 was excellent but I found it dragged in the last few chapters, preferred Yakuza 6 overall. Glad I didn't wait to play them in order also. 6 gives you enough info to know what's going on without having played the previous games.

I know they said there will be no Kiwami 3, 4, 5 according to devs as they were already new enough but looking forward to them releasing this side of the world anyway.

Yeah I read somewhere that 3-5 won't be getting the "Kiwami" treatment but will just be remasters of the games with upgraded graphics - dragon engine won't be used for them.

I completed Yakuza 0 a few months ago and if anything I found it a little bit easy.
I'm now playing through yakuza kiwami and I can't beat Futoshi Shimano. I understand that it's meant to be a slow fight but whenever he grabs me I can't escape no matter how fast I mash the button. He usually gets two hit in when he grabs me, once when he throws me and then his stomp.
IN 0 I had no problem escaping grabs, is there timing involved rather than just button mashing?

Are you playing on PC with a gamepad? Steam has very advanced (albeit not user friendly) customisation for them. For any button-mashing games, I immediately assign a mashing macro and use the PS4's touchpad as the modifier. I loathe button mashing in most games.

Hi yes I am on pc with a xbox360 pad. I'll try that thanks.
I did beat him in the end, just ran around until he did the move that make him fall over and attacked 2/3 times. Took a while and it was a very boring fight.

Most of the bosses telegraph the grab moves I found so it's a matter of getting used to patterns and dodging around and getting a few hits in. I used Brawler most but if I found I was having trouble getting around a tanky enemy I used Rush, just upgrade it so you get more damage from combos. Be prepared for some arthritis in your fingers with later bosses though which for the most part are pain in the hole.
