in Fairness to SnakePlisken , he has a point, do you think the Guardian/left wing media in the next few days will be posting hit pieces on how Christians in Asia are targets of massive amounts of hate crime ? - and how all Muslims should feel guilt and shame over this ??

    doubt it somehow.

    There certainly is an issue.

They don't cover much on terrorism in the Middle East or Africa either. It's the location. not the religion of the victims that determines their coverage.
    its a bit of both

Today's spate of bombings is a return to the bad old days, albeit focused on two small minority religions in the Sri Lankan sense.

Perhaps that was the point, attacking a religion that the Sri Lankans might not care that much about, whereas if they had attacked a Buddhist or Hindu temple the fury might have fallen on Moslems full force.

Why do you bring american bi partisan politics into this?

Honestly it seems like mental illness at this point

    The salient points.
    • This was a very well orchestrated attack that was carried out seemingly without a hitch.
    • Sri Lanka has not experienced any attack similar to this.
    • This was in effect an attack of one minority upon another. Both Christians and Muslims account for only about 9% of the population, each, on the island.
    • This was clearly also designed to damage Sri Lanka's international standing. By attacking hotels and foreigners, Sri Lanka is likely to suffer significant economic consequences.
    • Of crucial significance is whether the terrorist cell was home grown, or did it travel to Sri Lanka. Either answer poses significant questions.
    • It goes without saying that neither assassinating AlQaeda's Osama bin Laden, nor destroying ISIL's Syrian-Iraqi caliphate means an end to Islamic extremism.

Agreed but the way they posted was obnoxious.

Reddit is apparently censoring the discussion of Sri Lanka on its breaking news section

    https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/bfq3y6/reddit_not_covering_the_sri_lanka_bombings_the/

I suppose it's also worth pointing out that within 24 hours of the New Zealand attack, that the thread about it here on boards was 27 pages long.

That's not a realistic or fair comparison.

This was a bombing attack, not a shooting.
It wasn't live streamed to the world.
We are a western nation and New Zealand is a "Western" nation.....while Sri Lanka is not.
The perpetrators of this also didn't shout "Subscribe to Pewdiepie" before they detonated the bombs.

I think these four, pretty noteworthy points, account for the lack of immediate public knowledge and discourse.

This suggests external involvement. Several bombs at the same time requires a level of organisation that would be hard to acheive for a home grown group on a first attempt.

Thanks for this post Random, quite informative. Can I ask, as someone quite uneducated in religions around the world, if Christians and Muslims only cover 9% of the population what is the majority religion?

You can point it out but it's not a fair comparison. Most Irish people know someone who lives in New Zealand, have lived there/travelled there themselves or identify with other English speaking nations more quickly than others.

It's human nature. I've already admitted, as per my post above, that I know nothing about Sri Lanka so it makes sense that this wouldn't immediately strike a cord with me.

Also, the link you provided does not say that Reddit is censoring any discussion, it just says it's not front page news. Reddit have no control over that, just as Boards have no control about how many people want to discuss Sri Lanka.

There you the good old religion of peace back at it again with the murder of more innocent people. The usual people out accusing you of being a racist every time you criticize the i word only for you to be proven right time and time again.

Also, I'm reserving a lot of judgement until there is actual confirmation as to who carried out these attacks. Am I right in saying that there is no confirmation as yet?

It seems there was a massive failure in communicating the known threat to other parts of government. Some people knew ten days ago that prominent churches were to be attacked, but that information didn't get disseminated.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,215 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Over 290 now dead and that number is expected to rise. Local Islamic militant group is behind the attack according to the health ministry.

What an absolutely horrific act of barbarism. Few nationalities from other countries also amongst the victims.

    Fcuk Putin. Glory to Ukraine!

The word Christian or Catholic has not been used
They’ve gone with ‘Easter worshipers’ and tourists

WTF is an Easter Worshiper ?

The Sri Lankan government has a lot to answer for. They knew of these threats coming from the absolute evil among us.

    That's absolutely hilarious.

Somebody who worships the Easter bunny, they sacrifice lambs to appease him and eat eggs in celebration.

Do any of your responses ever have anything to do with what you quote in them?

    Yes, I think so.
Looking at Google before the terror attack there are lots of US results for "Easter worshipers"
That doesn't mean Obama and Clinton didn't specifically chose to use this phrase over "Christians" to soften the message.

The jihadis targeted the victims specifically because they are Christian. Much like they do in Nigeria, Pakistan, India, France, Philippines, Egypt, ...
