Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Depends. If its some new relatively unknown band I will buy their stuff to support them, but if its some well established bands who are already minted I will just steal it from the interwebs.

I havent paid for music in years, its just so easy to find online for free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

I listen free on youtube and if I like the music enough to want to have it on my phone / in the car I will pay for their music.

I could download it for free easily but it's not even the value of two pints for hours of entertainment.

I've an 8-track cartridge tape in the car, anyway of using this 'frostwire' thing to download to that, not very tech savvy I'm afraid.

Seeing as how itunes and the likes are still making money. Alot of people out there legally buying music.

Problem is, i'm sick to death of hearing liars say they do, when they really dont  - you know the type. guys who say "I download to try, like a demo" or what not :pac:

I pay for some stuff: mainly stuff I want to have an artifact of.

I spent years and years having to fork out (often on import) for entire albums and compilations just to get single tune that I liked so I've earned the right to download a little for free.

The old model of music consumption is gone forever and will never be back. Streaming is probably the way forward with some kind of nominal fee. Only people of my generation - and a minute proportion of generations thereafter - have a emotional attachment to physical music artifacts.

Plus if less artists make music, what of it? There has been more music made already (and easily accessible) than most of us can ever hope to plough through properly .

I just stream everything now and create playlists on youtube/vevo or whatever else on my phone. Handiest.

That would be reinforcing laziness. It's not difficult. No tricks involved. Best advice would be to figure it out. Hint: check the menu bar.

You down 'own' the music you download from Apple, just ask Bruce Willis.

If I can't find a song/album I am looking for on line I will buy off itunes. Same if the quality of the on line version is poor.

My bother however has thousands of songs on his ipod and has purchased them all from itunes

I dont know how the nano works as I dont have one. I have an ipod touch and I have an even older ipod, the type with the rotational control. I cant even remember what its called its been that long since its been out of the drawer, maybe an ipod mini....

All Ive been doing is downloading whatever music tracks I want from ANYWHERE, then simply dragging them into itunes and it converts the songs into the format the ipod wants and it plays. I dont have to do anything at all, itunes does it all for me.

I dont like itunes actually. In fact, sometimes I hate it. There are probably some settings that can be changed, but at the time, I found it really difficult to have two ipods using the same computer. Kept trying to synch playlists with the wrong ipod etc. Id much rather have a simple drag and drop system, like the folders in windows!

If you download FLAC versions of music, the quality will be exceptional. When searching just add "FLAC" to the album title, or choose it in the list of results.

Go to your 'My Music' folder or wherever the songs are, right-click, 'Open with -> Itunes', drag them down to the left hand side where it says 'My iPod'. It honestly couldn't be more easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,354 ✭✭✭✭endacl

No. I don't pay to download. Over the years is spent silly money buying 1000's of albums on vinyl, then cd's. Feel no guilt downloading an album I've already paid for. Now, if I want something new, I'll get the vinyl. Putting on music still retains some 'ritual'. Most albums come with a code for a free dl. If they dont, sometimes I'm cheeky and grab it anyway. No different from when I used to tape a copy for the car. I'd be embarrassed to add up an estimate of what I've paid over the years for music. Won't 'buy an album' in mp3 format. Will chuck it on in the car as an mp3, but if I'm listening at home, I want quality.

I'm using YouTube converter. Just simply find the song on YouTube then copy the link and away you go you have to drag the file over alright but all in all you've the song on your iPod within 7-8 mind. I think this works well for me as quality is good enough. Am I creating work for myself by doing this

do you check their accounts to see if they are minted or do you guess? Or is ti only pre 1990 bands?

The file sizes are huge though so not really suitable for portable devices with very limited storage. Plus in a typical portable environment (noisy DART, etc) I doubt if you'd tell the difference between them & 320kbps mp3s. In addition, if (unlike me) you're an Apple gimp user you won't be able to play them on your iPod but will have to convert them. For home use with a decent system they're pretty good though.

In fairness if he's using that method to get his music he's probably also using the earbuds that came free with his iPod, so he wouldn't be able to notice any difference in quality anyway.

I'd have the entire discography of most artists in that kinda time.

Well a lot of that time is do to crappy download speeds. I think quality is good enough

Well, if you're happy with it... Try an A/B test with a legal mp3 of the same track. Then try it against a cd copy. If you have access, try vinyl. If you're still happy, bin the ipod earbuds and try again.
