You mean 'hammy', as in deliberately OTT for the sake of art. I think it's just sh1te. Deliberate or not though, it is annoyingly distracting.
A ham actor overacts because he doesn't know any better, or hasn't the skill to be any more subtle. Deliberately over the top is probably best described as camp.

He played Judge Dredd very subtlety, not a bit hammy or over the top. I think his character in The Boys is exactly as intended.

He was great in Judge Dredd, accent included. His accent is terrible in The Boys, whether intentional or not, or whether it irritates or not. I think he's great in the The Boys; it's just that the accent irritates me. I don't think he can do it properly, so perhaps hams it up in humour. Maybe he can explain it himself sometime.

It's usually only attempts at Irish accents that I find hugely distracting (Joe Gilgun in Preacher, for example, but it could also be that all three leads are putting on strong accents!). I don't think I even blinked twice at Karl Urbans accent in The Boys. Everyone's different though, so I do feel for you that you find it so annoying.

However, it's still an awesome show and I can't wait for its return!

Urban's accent in The Boys is shocking, I don't know why they didn't let him keep his NZ accent or let him do an American accent.

Heartily recommend Cobra, a late 80s, ultra-macho action movie starring Stallone.

Fun fact: Stallone was originally going to be the star of Beverly Hills Cop, against the studio's wishes. Paramount had a clause in the 80s whereupon every script with a male leading role goes to Stallone first. He really liked the script and rewrote it to the extent that tons of new action scenes were added and most of the comedy was removed.

Paramount, secretly delighted, told him they couldn't afford what he had proposed but allowed to take his idea to a rival studio. So 'Axel Cobretti' (Stallone's re-write) became Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley and Cobretti became the star of Cobra.

The True History of the Kelly Gang was added today. Didn't get to see it in the cinema like most things this year.

Any idea why Prime no longer sending Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos for shows that had it? and if the video quality is still reduced due to Covid?

    Anyone?

    Anyone?

I didn't think that Amazon did anything in Dolby Vision apart from Jack Ryan? I haven't watched that show, so can't confirm. Everything else on it comes through to my tv as HDR. Most Netflix stuff is Dolby Vision though.......

According to the book High Concept, the producers Simpson and Bruckheimer wanted Stallone off BHC so badly that they, knowing he was massively insecure about the size of his penis, arranged for him to fly to Switzerland to receive a revolutionary new treatment which involved injections of sheep semen.

Anyway who had Prime Video and then later got a subscription via Eir, how do you merge the two?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,823 ✭✭✭robo

Mary & Max - on Amazon Prime. Anyone watch it? It is on a poster I have for 100 Films to watch and I watched it last night.
It is quirky & different but based on a true life story. Its about an unlikely friendship between a young girl in Australia (voiced by Toni Collette when older) & a 44 year old obese man living in New York (voiced by Philip Seymore Hoffmann)
It animation and quirky - I don't think I have ever watched anything similar before.

Anyone else watch it, what did you think?

There should be a link in your My Eir account and you just sign into your account from it. I think? It's a while since I did it but I remember it being very simple and quick.

Watched a few years back; beautiful film. I'd highly recommend it. Sentimental, but not overly so, funny, and with some great observations; it's gotta lotta heart.

Cheers, saw the link alright but wasn't sure if it'll try create a new account or allow me to link to the current one, which is UK one. I'll follow through so and see what happens.

Just finished Season 3 on Friday (sourced elsewhere) and the quality stays up. Best spy show I've ever seen - treats the viewer with intelligence and is probably far more representative of what spying is actually like.

Watched The Vast of Night yesterday ,was very enjoyable. Kind of like a paired down, more sinister version of Close Encounters. Really like the setting and atmosphere.

I've a real soft spot for The Wedding Singer and was delighted to see that it had made its way on to prime recently. Thoroughly enjoyed it, the movie is so familiar to me even though I probably have not watched it in nearly 20 years.

I watched Knives Out tonight. Really enjoyed it. It's a lot of fun and really well structured. I figured out a lot of it just before the characters did which made me feel super smart but I think that's the way a good mystery is written. They give you the clues to put it together without being obvious about it.
Anyway, highly recommend. Didn't even notice the 2hr10 run time on it. Flew by.

I enjoy the first season of Preacher but I'm 4 epsidoes into season 2 and I'm really struggling.

I finished the final season of Preacher today and have to say that once you get past season 2 which is a bit of a slot, seasons 3 and 4 (which have fewer episodes) are very entertaining. Would recommend to anyone who's enjoyed The Boys as both are based on Garth Ennis comics.

I started Little Fires Everywhere a few days ago. It's only 8 episodes but its a fantastic drama.
Reese Witherspoon and Kerry washington are the leads.Witherspoon plays Elena, a mother of 4 with a seemingly perfect life, Washington plays Mia a single mother who is a broke artist. Their lives start to intertwine and all is not as it seems.

I'm loving it.The scenes between Mia and her daughter Pearl are my favourite but I don't see any real weak spots to it. If you liked Big Little Lies I'd say you'll like this.It has a similar setting as its in an upper class neighbourhood with stepford wives vibes.

About midway through Hunters. Enjoying it alot even though the artistic licence with some of the flashback scenes are a little distasteful / added purely for shock value.

Started watching the US version of The Office recently too having ignored it for years. About midway through season 4 and absolutely loving it, its really hit its stride and is very difficult to pull oneself away from, definitely a "just one more" type of show.

Yeah, Hunters has its moments, but I gave up near the end; it just felt it didn't know what to do with itself.
Reviews on season 2 of the Boys a bit patchy, but looking forward to starting it soon.
Nearly finished season 1 of The Bureau. Pure class. I like- rather than love- a lot of French series, but I'm loving this. Really well put together and acted, it manages to show the boring drudgery of spycraft in a compelling way, without the need for action set-pieces.

Started watching Halt and Catch Fire and I'm completely engrossed after the first 3 or 4 episodes. It's set in Texas in the early eighties and it's about a charismatic salesman conning the software company he has started working for into taking on IBM in the PC market with the help of an engineer and a programmer. I'm definitely not selling it with the description but it is a fascinating watch.

The first season felt like it was still finding its stride a bit but after that it just got better and better. I think it may well have had my very favourite tv show finale too. Seeing the main four actors in anything else still makes me feel strangely nostalgic for all the imaginary time it feels like we spent together.

Anyone into Mr. Robot? I watched the first 3 season a few years back when it came out and only recently finished the fourth and final season. I thought all 3 seasons were amazing and a lot of the hacking tools and terminology are real. There's some scenes that leave you stunned as they come out of nowhere or they're downright shockingly violent. Great soundtrack aswell.

Read this decided to give it a go and it is superb, totally engrossing. Four main leads excellent.

I started halt and catch fire earlier after reading the last few posts. Only two episodes in and it's excellent.

Thank god it was mentioned Halt & Catch Fire was on Prime because it never pops up when I'm browsing through the app. I've wanted to watch this show for a few years but between forgetting it when looking for something new to watch, and not being able to find it online I'm only getting to it now.

It was definitely worth the wait, I'm on a serious binge of it and watched 3 series in a week. Well, I've 2 episodes of S3 to get through first. I don't want it to end, it's so very compelling. Like Mad Men set in the 80s tech world.

I'm going to be very sad to finish the show in the next few days.

You're in for a treat with S4. It's brilliant. If you think the directing work has been fantastic up to now then prepare for it to up the ante.
