Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Whats the difference during the application between the Irish stream and the regular one. I have good irish but wouldn't dream of sitting an interview in one. I've been told by an existing civil servant that you only have to hold a quick conversation but I'm sceptical tbh

Hi, I have very good Irish & was successful in the Irish stream years ago, however I feel this is quite different, in fact it does mention fluency somewhere so I didn't chance it because I am certainly not fluent.

I have submitted my application but when I go back in to view it the section 'experience and qualifications' hasn't saved. I've tried to re-save a few times but no joy. Has anyone else had this problem?

is there anywhere that you can get practice tests online? Anyone know if there is much of a step up from the CO tests?

I have recently applied for the AO Competition but haven't got a good enough ranking to go to stage 2. Have now apllied for EO, will I repeat yhe online assessment or does the previous assessment count for this competition too? (I know they say u carry your score forward for 12:months but does that apply to all competitions? Id rather repeat the assessment)

New competition, new assessment I'm afraid.

Hi all.  I didn't get past the work place situational test last time.  Unlike previous years, in each scenario, you were asked to rate the answers from most likely, something likely and then least likely (or something like that) so each question had 4 responses.  It completely flummoxed me.  Does anyone know what it is that they are looking for?  Do they want you to answer that 'you' are now the management and that you will take on all responsibilities and act as the boss?  Just not sure what they want here?  MTIA.

3.5% of pay plus 3% of pensionable pay (which is your pay minus twice the current state pension). I'm on the 2nd point of the EO scale and pay approx. €90 in pension contributions monthly. But I also pay over €30 in PRD which does not go towards your pension, it's just a levy.

I just applied there. Does anyone know why in the initial application, it doesn't allow you to provide your CV or at least to answer questions on your education details or work experience? They just ask what level of qualification you have (eg diploma or degree etc) rather than what your actual degree is (eg BA Public Administration). Likewise, your work experience you can only advise if you are management, experienced, entry level, length of time etch rather than being able to demonstrate your actual experience (what companies or organisations you worked for, what your position was, duties: project management, planning, organisation, customer service etc).

How can they shortlist candidates based on such scant high level information? Surely they risk overlooking desirable candidates if those candidates are unable to elaborate on their academic and professional qualifications/experience/abilities? Any other job application would have sections to fill this info out or have you include a CV/cover letter.

They only care that you meet the basic requirements, they use the aptitude tests to shortlist applicants.

They get thousands of applications they can't read and rank all CVs. Your qualifications should stand to you at interview though.

Ah, that makes sense! Thank you for your quick response!!:)

One other question, by default then, does everyone who applied get the opportunity to do the online assessment (and if does well enough, proceed to the aptitude test)?

    No problem! 😀

We all do the online assessment questionnaire and aptitude tests. Those who pass are ranked by order of score and they take however many they need (it varies from campaign to campaign) through to stage 2. But everyone gets a shot at stage one :)

I got so close to making the top 300 cut-off for the recent AO competition but ultimately fell short. So this time around I want to be more prepared for the online tests.

Does anyone have any good links to similar tests? Or can anyone remember the name of the company who administered them? I'm considering paying for practice tests.

It's the verbal reasoning ones I find the toughest.

I wasn't even going to bother, since I suck at those aptitude tests but I couldn't ignore it anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 983 ✭✭✭misslemon

It was cut-e for AO anyway. I fecking hate those tabs!

  • Registered Users Posts: 316 ✭✭sureitsgrand

Cheers, I remember the name cut-e alright. Also remember the name Cubiks - but that might be from some other applications I've done.

Wouldn't have considered ever paying for practice tests in the past but after having had the frustrating experience of probably only being one or two correct answers away from an interview in the AO competition I think I might do it this time.

Taxcalc.ie have an option for public servants so you can calculate it there and you'd be going odd the executive officer ppc scale just Google it there's a circular somewhere

Can't wait until the online testing is done, should be next week I think.

Did anyone else go for the EO positions with the National Transport Authority and Residential Tenancies Board?

I dropped them a mail about this. They are aware of the issue and say that the correct info appears on their systems even if not visible on our side.

any time I've gotten a call from them the number was visible and if they I missed a call they left a voicemail telling me to contact them.

No need to panic. If you are successful and advance to the next round. You will be asked to provide a CV like form listing out your education, career and examples of competences.

  • Registered Users Posts: 983 ✭✭✭misslemon

Just checking, this is slightly different to the AO competition, right? We're just doing the assessment next week rather than getting links to the assessment and aptitude tests at the one time?

I know it's pretty self-explanatory I just don't want to rule myself out on a misunderstanding!

I wonder if they will use the same tab based format for part b that was used in the HEO comp last year. I kinda hope so.

Anyway, out of interest. How did people answer the example below?

You overhear a colleague, Terry, complaining that his manager never listens to him. You know his manager and are aware that she is an excellent manager who cares about the views of all of her staff.

Please rate each action independently by selecting from the drop down menu in each case.

    a. Ask Terry if he would like you to talk to his manager about it.

Excellent response, Good response, Adequate response, Weak response, Bad response

    b. Tell Terry that his manager probably does listen but that he may not always appreciate that that is the case.

Excellent response, Good response, Adequate response, Weak response, Bad response

    c. Tell the manager what you heard but do not inform Terry.

Excellent response, Good response, Adequate response, Weak response, Bad response

    d. Do nothing.

Excellent response, Good response, Adequate response, Weak response, Bad response

    I went with

    A: Excellent
    B: Weak
    C: Adequate
    D: Bad

I was placed in the high teens after interview. Not hopeful at all of being offered a position off that!

I had A, Good, B, Adequate, C, Adequate and D Weak. It was a difficult scenario to consider be honest. Should you be intervening in another employee/manager relationship just because you overheard something rather than it being brought directly to your attention (eg Terry confiding in you)? Acting to improve a situation without either the employee or the manager's permission has shortcomings too which is why I put adequate.

Sounds like these scenario questions will be quite subjective if this is a typical example......

I was kinda thinking the same. It's eavesdropping at the end of the day but I was thinking that as a superior you could have a quiet chat, stating that you overheard the conversation and try to sort it out. I don't know, that's what i was thinking anyway.

No, it's scenarios and some 'What kind of person are you? ' questions. That's what I gather from reading the familiarisation material.
