Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

To be honest, they should just change something, anything, just try something different... for a change.

I emphasize by the way the criticism is probably more against RTe than Ronan, who I’m sure is a very nice person.

Smacks of lazy programming to be adopting the same tired formula for decades.

    In my opinion.

It's an Afternoon show, not everything has to be edgy, changing for the sake of change is total madness, my guess is he has one of the highest songs per hour average - that is a good thing. Listening to DJ's prattle on about nonsense is annoying.

Cathal Murray at night keeps the chat to a minimum also, even though he comes across as the most boring man alive, he has a good show because he plays the music.

Just change something dude, just for the crack.

Things move on.... if we didn’t change things Croke Park and Lansdowne Road would still be grey cold soulless kips, we’d still be listening to Din Joe at 1330, Mart and Market would still be on TV with Cowjack.

Morgan O Sullivan would still be on at 1000, The Kennedy’s of Castleross would still be on, Michael O Mhuirceartaigh would still be covering GAA games and Michael Lyster still doing The Sunday Game.

For Jaysus sake move on.........time to stir things up..... the same auld patter is stale a limp...... it’s 2019 FFS.

    Mart and Market.
That used to be on for about ten minutes I think. The price of heifers and two year olds. A bit of footage from Tullamore Mart maybe.
Then some Thursday evening sports programme which featured English first division highlights for twenty minutes . A lifeline for those in one channel land.

Ronan never announces a listeners age

Very true the birthday lady is celebrating a significant birthday or some such. I think that male listener birthday information may be more specific though.

200 going, we can always hope.

He won't be going anywhere till retirement age. The RTE Gold avenue has now been shut off. He'll stick it out till the end.

Anyway, I've no issue with Ronan . As I said before it's a grand oasis from current affairs.

The whole RTE Radio 1 schedule has run its course. The current format was done by Anna Leddy over 10 years ago. It's time to do something different with it.

    Set in stone.

Ronan continuing his annual tradition of playing different cover versions of ‘O Holy Night’.

When will he get to this one... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,602 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I see Ronan will be doing the showband tour for all of January and some of Feb...So presuming he will be away from the radio show?...Hopefully Radio 1 will get a proper stand in presenter and not the bland Michael Cahill or Ciara, Keith from 2FM or someone looking for shout outs on "twidder" !!

Ronan did a superb job on his show today with a lovely tribute to Larry, excellent music and well chosen words in what must have been difficult circumstances. Credit where credit is due.

Just listened to Ronan's show from yesterday there myself. A great tribute. Lovely hour of radio.

    Una Healy

    Una Healy

I just turned on the wireless and clearly it’s not Ronan but I was wondering who it was. In fairness she hasn’t lost the accent which is nice to see.

This is meant as a compliment but may not come across as one but she’s doing a good job so far.

    Nope.

She’s trying hard but not really working for me.

Music choice is pretty poor for the age profile of the average listener.

Ah let’s give her a week to see how she does. Not a bad start IMO.

Bright ,lively, fast moving, different type of music.... thumbs up from the Bren.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,602 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

she has the uk/Irish accent when she's on TV???...sounds like it's magically disappeared!!!

why do RTE feel that they need a non radio /celebrity person to fill in on these shows!!!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,609 ✭✭✭California Dreamer

FFS! The amount of proper experienced radio people that are in RTE, and in the regions that could do with the gig and we get landed with the former mediorce pop star!!!

Well I thought she did well for a first outing. I like Ronan and his easy way he has; Una was a good choice. And she didn’t take it over and make it all-about-her. I look forward to the rest of her week.

You would think with the financial state of RTE, that RTE would get staffers to fill in on such shows, instead of paying more Contractors!!!

According to an article on buzz.ie, Ronan's contract expires later this year and Una is rumoured to be replacing him permamently.

Good move, that slot needs a bit of a shake up.

RTE can just renew Ronan's contract. The problem with radio today is when non presenter celebrities replace radio presenters

"There's a move towards putting famous TV faces on radio, like the hiring of Brendan O'Connor to take over Marian Finucane's old slots."

    Hahahah! Who writes this crap?!!?

Good move, that slot needs a bit of a shake up.

Rick O'Shea (if he would go back to his real name) would be perfect in that slot or Will Leahy, Lorcan Murray, Aidan Leonard or any of the former 2FM old guard. Experienced radio presenters are a plenty. At this rate they might as well give it to Lottie Ryan!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,420 ✭✭✭✭sligojoek

It looks like Una is here to stay. Tubbs gave her a plug this morning and welcomed her to "the fun factory". There was also an ad for her during SOR.

That never happened with any of the other "stand ins" in the past.

Wouldn't Una Healy be more suited to 2fm? Actually she's about the same age as most of the female daytime 2fm djs

Looks like they're going for a younger audience. The Frank Sinatra and Deano brigade won't last forever.

Agreed. this Healy one is wholly unsiitable for this slot. Stand in's lately on Radio 1 music shows have been terrible choices. Like I said I thought RTE were strapped for cash..get an RTE staffer to take that slot if Ronan is hanging up his headphones

About time they got sense Joe, the Swingtime Aces era is long gone.

The auld Roseland Ballroom in Moate doesn’t get the mineral bottles clinking too much these days.

Time to move on, I would suggest.

Ageism alive and well in RTE.Anyone over fifty four doesn't count it appears when they are catering for listeners.

    It doesn't need it.

I heard a bit of her show today and she played "Feels Like Heaven" by Fiction Factory which wouldn't be on 2fm anymore. It's no different to BBC putting Angela Scanlon on Radio 2.

That's part of the problem. RTE are meant to be a PSB but their flagship station is only interested in the same narrow audience that listen out of habit.

The solution here is to keep the dedicated oldies station i.e.: RTE Gold. It would reduce the number of music shows on Radio 1 too.
I wonder where will the few Gold staff be redeployed to when it expects to cease?

Well i listened to Una Healy today and I have to say I thought she was fine - a nice stand in for Ronan. She followed his light and easy style, which I like, and did all the well wishing and happy birthday stuff with good grace and humour. I also like her accent and her diction is good. All in all, for what it’s, well done Una

I didn’t win tickets to see ELO, though, darn it!
