Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

why did RTE drop "The Living word" which had been around for many, many years for a terribly named slot called "A word in edgeways" ?

This morning had a woman from Sligo talking for ages about taking down decorations from the attic and putting up the Christmas tree.

    Really awful.

He seems like a decent person, and plays some good music, but at that hour, I'm not interested in hearing about the adventures of 'Lucky Larry' and Co, so I only tune in for the news and weather

    Alf retired in 2015. https://www.echolive.ie/corklives/arid-40218665.html

Lilian was never dropped as such but she spent forever as a fill in and was liable to disappear for weeks at a time. Nowadays she fluctuates between her regular weekend Rising Time shows and standing in on Late Date or Rising Time weekdays, or very occasionally for John Creedon. I once heard that she was offered Late Date on a permanent basis when Val Joyce had retired but politely declined the offer.

Alf made no secret of his desire to continue working after his 65th birthday, It is surprising then that he never again got any work there, considering that late date went a longtime without a permanent presenter and it's not like RTE stopped the practice of rehiring retirees as Angus McAnally was back producing liveline as a contractor shortly after his retirement. The only conclusion I can come to is that Alf just wasn't liked by management.

somehow I don't think shay byrne wants a promotion??

He has his 1.5 hrs show done by 7am, then preps for his next days show - so I would estimate he's home by latest 12 noon. his music is all pre-selected, no song requests from listeners during the show. so he knows the running order and the links / banter with business/sports timings in between songs.

nice work if you can get it.

much better than his previous job, of being a painter / decorator just over 10 years ago.

    is he permanent with RTE?

Wonder what the figures are for rising time but I agree Shay seems happy enough with the job he has am sure he makes enough and away nice and early to do other things if he wants.

I've always wondered if he persisted with his signature sign-off on bad news days like the start of lockdown etc. Anyone ever heard him skip it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭rolling boh

I'd say it comes automatically to him like his banter act .

From listening to shay's show and the texts he reads out, I think the majority of his listeners are not the doom and gloom type. not the day to day early commuters.

at a guess they would be over 55, retired or semi retired - living in the country.

all they've to think about at that hour of the morning, is the 6am walk with the dog and the weather prospects, not really bad news.

    Yeah I'd agree.

RTE leave the prime time slots and huge money presenters to chat about boats that sank 75 years ago, and grass being too long in graveyards.

Sheelagh Dempsey sounded to be panicking and was very out of breath opening the show and introducing to the news room just now at 6am, it was very strange to hear.

she acknowledged this after, but I wonder what happened?

Getting very strong ‘We’re Sending Our Love Down The Well’ vibes from this Michael English song!

Where has Shay Byrne been for the last wo weeks? I kind of remember he was on holiday not too far back in Summer perhaps? How much holiday time does he get a year?

I often wonder about the part timers in RTE as to what they get up to after their show. Does Shay finish his day work at 9AM? 1One and a half hours work a day with RTE? What does he do every day after that? Same with Ronan Collins.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭rolling boh

The part time thing would suit Ronan if its true he has had a couple of health issues so an easy enoughwork day would suit .No idea how Shay passes his time he must earn a few quid somewhere hardly enough MC jobs he does here and there .

Shay has been on leave the past two weeks. He will be back tomorrow. I think he said that he had leave to use by year end or else he would lose it.

Shay seems to be involved in the country music scene also. I think he presents or has some involvement with a ountry music show on one of the satellite channels, but I have no idea which one.

I vaguely remember him saying before that he leaves RTE around lunchtime each day, so in that case he could easily clock up 8 hours in the building.

Wasn't he warm up man for the old Winning Streak show? Don't know if he did warm up for any other live shows

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭Red Fred

I think so. I know that he used to announce what prizes the contestants had won but then I think was replaced by Lottie Ryan.

I would often listen to Rising Time on my early morning commute, and actually enjoyed Shay B despite his cheesiness.

And Lillian has a great voice for radio, but recently I have found myself tuning out if she is on, as her music choice is simply far too gentle/laid back/slow.

I know at that time of the morning you aren't expecting to hear ACDC or uptempo stuff, but jez it's all very generic mellow stuff.

Change it up a bit Lillian, I don't want to doze off on my drive.

Shay Byrne is in what used to be Ryan Tubridy's slot for the first few weeks of January 2024.

Trying to find a fit for the show/slot?

The 3 used so far aren't cutting the mustard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭Red Fred

There is an interview with Kevin Backurst on Indo.ie and apparently the replacement has been decided upon and will be revealed in the next few weeks.

Shay does a mighty job on rising time and might be the man for the 9 o clock show

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭Red Fred

Listening to Shay this morning was like Groundhog Day. At 6.15 this morning he spent 5 minutes or so reviewing the newspapers. He seemed to be unaware that they were yesterday's papers!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,765 ✭✭✭GSF

well Lilian on Tuesday only did about 30 seconds on the papers ( does she get the full newspaper in the cork studio or just the front pages via email? ). Maybe Shay felt she hadn’t done them in enough detail!

Very different styles and music choices between Lilian and Shay. Lilian is very brief whereas Shay is overly verbose at times

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,997 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Lillians music choice would put you to sleep.

I had to stop listening to her on my early morning commute for fear of putting the car in the ditch.

I got tired of Lillian ramming it down our throats that she was broadcasting from Cork!
