Money must be an issue at both provincial and IRFU levels.

Can't see IRFU green lighting anything much in the way of spending tbh.

We need 2 signings to be competitive in Europe

we don't ask for Christmas father

Just as many players as last season, which was a slim slim squad

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,965 ✭✭✭connachta

Vavae Tuilagi younger brother in the familily is released by Carcasonne

just 32 y.o since May, he should have 1 more year in the tank!!

    Pure ball-carrying n°8 we need...

It's hard to see IRFU sanctioning any signings at the same time they're trying to convince the current players to take a pay cut.

And the names you're throwing around aren't good enough. Connacht don't need any more rubbish journeymen.

I got the impression from Ruane and Friend that the signings were pretty much already made they just haven't been announced yet

You would assume that a budget has been previously allocated and the money is there to sign these players without further approval from The IRFU factoring AF is saying you can expect another two signings. So I would say from Connacht's side they have the allocation for wages etc it just getting the players to sign on the dotted line.

Presumably because if the players play hard ball with the IRFU then the signings might not get sanctioned?

Tigers lost 5m revenue in the last 4 month's. Just to put it into context

Philip Browne previously stated budgets may well be revised downwards

Yeah ye're probably right lads. What would Andy Friend know about Connacht's signings for the season, wouldn't be as in the know with IRFU as yourselves.

And again, "wedge pretentions" are lower, so there's kind a of balance. Budget might be tight though, and we must have to live with players some of you consider as "not good enough". I'd be very happy with an experienced n°8 who gain ground without being exceptional. Same for a 15/Winger, a profile like Dannie Poolman

But it's just not possible to go with such a thin squad. Barely 30 players above 24.

Last season we were forced to play a 19 y.o guy when we had 2 more guys in the squad.

IRFU will let at least 2 coming

40 players under contract, 42 is a minimum in a "dense" season. With many international games to come, Connacht players might well be mobilized (and rested) for this too.

    16 of these 40 players are between 20 and 24 year-old

Oh I missed that. Was that after the Arnold and Oliver announcements?

But if that's the case, then the names being thrown around here definitely aren't in the mix (which is a good thing).

If someone has been playing in the ProD2 for nine years and is past their prime age, then a club like Connacht should not be considering them. You would be signing a surname and nothing more.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,797 ✭✭✭b.gud

On the Connacht zoom call this evening.
Andy and Willie both said that they expect the Connacht squad to be bigger next season, when compared to this season.
    Expect some announcements this week

The above post from bazwarf is where it was originally mentioned that Friend and Ruane said there would be signings

Not at all. For example n°8 Tuilagi or the S-Af winger I quoted are listed as "released" for ages, and not retired or link to a new club.

So they might be signed (for us or elsewhere) waiting for an official announcement (linked to season tickets)

Why on earth everybody does quote J.Ryan ?

    He's an exception of athletism.
Yes he is a lean 20 y.o lock

    1 to 495 professional 2nd rows who are between 115 and 120k, + between 28 and 34 y.old

If you don’t want James Ryan here’s a list of internationals that are +- 5kg of Murray ( depending on when in the day they have visited the toilet )... let the kid play before judging....he may look slim out on the pitch but If you went out of your way to watch him play at club level or international level (u20) you would have seen he packs a far bigger punch than how he looks.. imo the closest player on this list that his game translates to is Courtney lawes, may not ever be a big carrier but class in line out and workhorse in D..

    Tadgh Beirne 113kg
    Scott Barrett 111kg
    Franco mostert 112kg
    Courtney lawes 115kg
    Rg snyman 117kg
    Maro itoje 115kg
    Cyril cazeaux 107kg
    Gulliame ducat 110kg

    Dean budd 108kg
    Niccolo cannone 110kg
    Federrico ruzza 108kg
    Ultan dillane 115kg
    Seb Davies 116kg
    Cory hill 111kg
    Scott Cummings 116kg
    Ben toolis 115k

(I gave up after 6nations teams)

Murray just reach 110k from 100k during lockdown. He may lose weight during open season and training.

So here are in your list those who are really comparable

the 25 capped welsh player and the italian captain with 29 caps might like to be considered pretty high profile' .... especially considering the quality of player you were linking to connacht earlier.

conveniently left franco mostert off that list too.....believe it or not he was just 103 kgs at the age of 25..... gives Murray plenty of time to add a decent bit of bulk to himself.

If you're comparing players like this you need to consider height, 111kg at 195cm (Cory Hill) is not the same as 110kg at ~201cm. I do agree that he punches above his weight and won't be found wanting in lower level Pro 14 games. He's a very good defender and an intelligent, effective carrier. I would be a bit concerned about his scrummaging, but it's not like Thornbury or Dillane are great either tbh.

I was thinking the same tonight, it's about BMI (body mass index)

I agree 100% with this post

    franco mostert

    111k 198m

    Nial Murray

    110 (sure it will be 108 after pre-season) 202m

Look at Thornbury he isn't fat, he isn't a ball carrier, or a scrummager

    he's the same height and .. 114k

Murray has to reach this at least. It's not for this season. But he may be on his way, and of course it's less worrying to have him in the team with 10 more kilos than last autumn

Great move for Alex & Connacht in my opinion and frees up some minutes for Flannery and French. All very sensible.

Win-win all round. Connacht fill a position of need, Munster free up a contract they no longer needed and Wootton gets a great opportunity.
