Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There was something on the radio about it yesterday.
I don't know if they mentioned the "T" word though. I doubt they did.
They apparently interviewed a woman from NZ who confronted them but was surrounded and threatened. The cheek of them.

Lovely opinions of the Irish they'll have.

Except these travellers are from Liverpool, travelling on UK passports so they belong to Her Majesty and not to Mickey D.

    Well that's good.
I had heard they were Irish
Wonder how they fund these sorties to far away places like New Zealand.
I'd be luck to afford a trip to Liverpool but then again I have to pay taxes.

Youd swear that young lad spouting was a liverpudlian alright, how could anyone mistake his accent? :D

They’d probably be eligible to play for Ireland (if they were so inclined) because of the grandparents rule.

Sometimes facts when presented to the green movement don't suit them like when someone buys a new electric car but on paper if they kept their 2 litre petrol car until it died they would have impacted the planet less.

That's not actually true at all. Engineering explained (great YouTube channel) did a breakdown of the lifetime emissions of a petrol vs hybrid/ev car and even in worst case scenario, like where coal is the source of electrical power generation, EVs will be cleaner over the course of 10 years or less. If you live somewhere that a lot of power is generated by wind/hydro then it will taken only a year or two for the EV to offset the emissions of production.

The amount of co2 produced in the manufacture of cars is greatly exaggerated. That said I still choose to keep my 21 year old Alfa going because I like it and it works.

Yes but their old polluting car continues polluting with the new owner, that's not in the calculation.

Any good one-liners from the Casey interview?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,787 ✭✭✭I see sheep

Is he still demonstrating his great knowledge of Irish life?

"I heard afterwards that he was in the Green Room and came over to Conor Nagle from Gill [publishers], going 'Are you Andy Lee?' Then he went to David McWilliams, 'Are you Andy Lee?'" - Andy Lee

Casey is a clown and a creep.

That sounds a bit like the time Jennifer Zampash!tlib asked him if he knew what direct provision was and he didn't know, despite answering questions on it a few weeks beforehand during his presidential campaign.

I hope he's still demonstrating his knowledge of real life facts and not the lies manufactured by RTE about travelers.

Whatever next, getting the secret handshake wrong at the Law Society Banquet?

I heard he didn't know the difference between a spoon and a soup-tureen either, why should we listen to a thing he says?

Honestly if your best criticism is that he can't mix fluently with the luvvies then I think you may have missed the reason why people voted for him.

Don't know what 'the luvvies' is but if he doesn't recognise Andy Lee or David McWilliams he doesn't know anything about Ireland and he should **** off back to America.

Don't worry I know exactly why people voted for him.

And you lost :) ha ha ha

One was a boxer and the other, well I have to assume he doesn't watch much RTE, so he could be forgiven for not recognising him.

I’m Irish born and bred. Never lived anywhere else. I’d be hard pressed to identify either of the gents mentioned.

I don’t think we did lose. He spoke for many in voicing his opinion of the traveller ethnic status. Their culture is long gone. Their ancestors would abhor the behavior of some. Back in the 60’s when I was a kid, travellers were mostly decent, honorable people. Horses were used for pulling caravans, not sulky racing. They did odd jobs for food or money. They weren’t greedy.

It was a landslide, he lost by 32%

Luckily most of the country isn't as bigoted and backwards as this forum :)

'They did odd jobs for food' sounds like life was great for them in the 60s yeah.

Well for a bit of background Andy Lee is a traveller, he's also one of Ireland's best boxers in the last 20 years.

Lee and Casey were both on the Late Late, Casey obviously knew this and was probably looking to have a chat with him and convince him he wasn't a racist (Father Ted style).

Now this fool who wanted to be president couldn't even google 'Andy Lee' like you did there yourself and find out what he looked like or anything else about him, he just knew he was a travelller, maybe he saw a traveller 40 years ago and was looking out for someone who matched his recollection.

It feels wrong putting these two people in the same sentence btw as Andy Lee has total class and integrity, things Casey will never have.

Believe what you want to believe. Joan Burton was on the radio on the day of the count and she was astounded at the sheer number of people who voted Higgins 1 and Casey 2. What I and those on the panel took from that, was that a large number of people believed Higgins was a better president but they certainly didn't disagree with what Casey said.

Only the uninformed and those in denial would argue otherwise. The recent uproar in NZ is a fine example of what these people get up to all the time.

You just have to remember that all the other candidates in the election were happy for a halting site built next door to them. It's something the local councils should take note of. I've often heard of local residents objecting to halting sites and delaying things.
These people tough are happy to have one next door so it might speed up the planning process.

I could picture the likes of Tubridy and Zamparelli going around knocking on their neighbours doors and having a word in their ears when the planning permission for a halting site goes up.

"ah ya sure look I have a reputation and a job to maintain so, you know. I can't really be seen to be objecting to anything like that but you definitely should though"

    Cretins the lot of them.

Yes....there is absolutely nothing unusual about 0.67 of the population representing 22% of the imprisoned people in the country.

There is absolutely no evidence at all of any crime epidemic in the Traveller population at all. Good man. You're very clever. We need more people like you to solve the problems in this country.
