Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

Spoke to Tom Blake from DIAS who has asked if you could fill out the questionairre here
    http://www.dias.ie/index.php?option=...id=240&lang=en

Tom said that because the seismogram did not clearly register the quake does not mean one did not occur.

He also said that earth tremors can occur in Waterford but are of course not that common.

    Regards,

    Wolfe

2.2 magnitude tremor near Blackburn on Saturday.

Could have something to do with fracking activity in the Lancashire region

Hi Bellis Perennis, I'm not too far from you (between 20/30km) as the crow flies, and although it's a good time ago now, I think I would have taken note if I had felt or heard something... I'm interested in all that. Didn't notice anything though. Was it one of the stormy nights ? Could it have been thunder/lightning strike very near you I wonder ? I can't remember the weather that far back. :o

Interesting one. Subsea tremor (2.1 mag) recorded in the Irish Sea last night at 11:17PM, the first quake to be recorded in the Irish Sea since 2008.

A 2.1 magnitude earthquake is the equivalent of the rumbling felt when an articulated truck drives past your house. Such tremors are only felt, if at all, by those in close proximity to the epicentre.

The tremblor struck at a depth of 7km, 39km east of Douglas, Isle of Man, and 50KM SSW of Whitehaven, Cumbria (highlighted in green here)

    Past Irish earthquakes here

Interestingly, there was another tremor today. This time it was near Stoke and it measured 2.4 on the Richter Scale.

    http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/earthquakes/recent_events/20120111115929.html#page=summary

It was recorded at a depth of just 1km meaning that it would have most likely been felt locally

Odd to think that they can even happen in this part of the world were just that used to them not happening I guess.

Reports of an Earth tremor being felt in the Kerrykeel area of Co. Donegal tonight around 9.30pm. This would be on the Lenan Fault line. Same line as the 2.2mag tremor on the 26th Jan 2012. No details on the BGS site yet, but keep an eye out here for confirmation. http://earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/

    Minor earthquake in Co Donegal

The tremor had a magnitude of 1.1 and was recorded at 9.20pm in the Inishowen area.
It was picked up by the British Geological Survey's equipment. This latest tremor was of a lesser magnitude than the quake felt in the north of the county on 26 January.
It had a magnitude of 2.2 and was recorded in Buncrana.
The largest quake to hit the country happened in 1951. The magnitude 3.7 tremor occurred sixteen kilometres off the shore of Co Wicklow on the east coast

What are the chances of a decently strong earthquake hitting Ireland?and have any big ones ever hit us in the past anywhere in Ireland? And what kind of scale of damage would we be talking about in somewhere quite populated such as Dublin after an earthquake of 5 or 6 on the richter scale hits? I'd imagine itd be catastrophic with so many old buildings.

    Hi bb,

The biggest quake to hit us recently was a 5.4 on the 19th of July in 1984. It hit at 7.57am, the epi centre was in Wales but to memory not much damage was caused bar stuff fell of the mantel piece in my house :)

I remember that really well!! I thought that my mum was really shaking me but when I woke up (school hols) she was not there and my Howard Jones RECORD had fallen off my bookshelf.......
No-one had a clue what was going on but it seemed to last a while (well, about 10 secs anyway.......)
It was a really bizarre feeling - I can only imagine how scary a really big one would be........:eek::eek:

I saw a programme on BBC 3 (or was it 4?) last night about a devastating tsunami in the Bristol Channel in 1607, the weather was fine at the time so it's not believed to have been a storm surge. The cause was probably an under sea 'quake

Going by the marine traffic, there was two ships in that location.
I wonder if anyone has contacted them to see did they feel it, they must have, since they were bascially sitting on the epicentre.

Apparently, it was meant to have knocked over a load of recently footed turf in some local bogs, now that would be annoying :D.

I'm getting a few reports on fb that there were a few shakes earlier in and around Clara. Can anyone confirm this? I'm on my phone so I can't check

    Thanks

Small tremor in Coleraine on Thursday last. Magnitude 1.3. The significance of this tremor is that none have ever been recorded in this part of the country since 1979 (official records began).

Don't know how this one wasn't picked up anywhere. The second strongest earthquake in Ireland/UK this year (after the 4.0 M Mayo quake) as far as I am aware
2.7m on Wednesday in the Isle of Jura, western Scotland
