Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Steep imo for the Astra, to me that a €600 car at most. Those Astra engines are fairly soft so I wouldn't want to be spending too much on one.

A bit yeah, id be inclined to offer 700 and go no more then 800. Head gaskets are their weakness.

Cheap to run, unlikely to break but even if it does, cheap to fix. The chape tax makes it a no brainer.

Always strange to see an old friend when least expected. I owned this until mid 2014. One previous owner when I bought it who was a relation of mine so I knew it well. It was well looked after up to then and never flogged, think I sold it with about 175,000km on the clock. God knows what life it has had since though! 2 previous owners would need checking, its not greenlighted.

Wasn't the mk2 introduced in 2004. Any idea how a mk1 would be on 2008 plates? Would the oil leaks on the driveway concern anyone else?

Its a bit of an unusual one. The Mk2 was introduced in 2004 as you mentioned but the MK1 was concurrently produced up until 2010 at least. There have certainly being sightings of 2009 Mk1 Octavias in this country and quite a few 2008 Mk1 knocking about.

I wonder is that definitely oil? If it is oil and if its from that Octavia then yes that would certainly concern me alright. The underside should be showing it if it is letting go of oil.

Aside from the above anything to watch out for on these. I have a 06 A4 Sline and needs about 1k repairs. would I be better off putting that 1k to the 08 A6.

I know going Petrol and tax will be a big change but if I get a year or 2 out of the A6 before flogging it

I just dont want to go down the route of finance on a newer car with lower specs.

Edit: Also any reason why the tax is €1200. There is a 06 A6 for sale 2.0 Petrol and the tax is €710

Would this be a better buy.

They continued to sell the old model alongside the new model. It was called the Octavia Tour. The newer model was a bit more expensive anyway and this model where all development was well paid for (Octavia launched in 1996) could be produced and sold much cheaper for markets where the new model was out of reach. We ended up getting them in Ireland but they mainly sold to taxi drivers.

There is very little to go wrong in them. Just make sure the coolent bottle is clean and filled with pink liquid. Electrical glitches will have been sorted ages ago. Timing belts need doing but is cheap and not critical.
Avoid abused examples, nice clean ones aren't much more money.

    They are text book bangernomics.

Any one here ever bought from Merlin Auctions? Had a look at the snapshot of prices and there are some great deals! Was thinking of heading up Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Went up there to buy a car before. Won the bidding but it didn't make its reserve and couldn't make a deal with the owner after the fact.

Merlin's was great though, staff were friendly and helpful for a first time and for a car guy it was a cool experience. Turn up good and early if you want a good look around the cars.

You would need to have your wits about you a little bit though, an awful lot of chancey scrap there, some of it going for what looks like well over the odds too when people get caught up bidding.

Look up how the fees are calculated beforehand because the price you are bidding doesn't include fees. I think the entry deposit to bid was like €500 too?
