Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I would highly recommend. I was a bit apprehensive going but I never had any trouble on the 2 trips down there. Rio felt dicey upon arrival but as long as you get registered taxis and stick to tourist zones you should be fine.

I didn't do Peru, but I didn't have any issues with flights down there in general thankfully. Probably because they were all big enough modern jets. Strange coming into Quito on final approach with the screen say you are at 9,500 feet as you skim over the tops of houses.

The planes themselves and airports were absolutely fine but you land and take off a lot quicker and at sharper angles- basically up and down over mountains. You really hear the engines and feel the plane shaking. You are literally on a runway taking off facing a big ass mountain.

I’m in Canada so I’ve no excuse.
So much to see there, I’ve been putting it off for too long.
I would like to see Mexico and Cuba too.

Interesting exercise alright. If for no other reason than to reminisce. By far the most interesting airport was Geilo in Norway. I still think the pilot did a lap first to check out the airport. It was tiny, literally one room, with a fridge and honesty box in the corner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geilo_Airport,_Dagali

    Hamilton, NZ
    Linkoping, Sweden
    Skelleftea, Sweden

and although Lukla has been mentioned before I'd like to repeat it here as the only fly or die airport I've ever flown out of.

This topic, I believe, have been there before. I love airport lists - love reading where people have been. My own list:

    Europe (71)

IRELAND (6): Dublin, Cork, Connemara, Inishmore, Inishmaan, Clonbollogue

DENMARK (21): Kastrup (Copenhagen), Værløse AFB, Aalborg, Billund, Tirstrup, Roskilde, Maribo, Nakskov, Karup AFB, Bybjerg, Trundholm, Rønne, Avnø AFB, Stenbæksholm (Næstved), Ny Hagested, Allerød, Års, Frederikssund, Skrydstrup AFB, Thisted, Vamdrup

    FAROE ISLANDS (1): Vagar

UK (7): Stansted, Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, Newquay, Leeds-Bradford

    SCOTLAND (1): Edinburgh

NORWAY (6): Gardermoen (Oslo), Sola (Stavanger), Sandefjord, Østre Æra, Flesland (Bergen), Værnes (Trondheim)

    SWEDEN (2): Lidköping, Backamo (Gothenburg)

    ICELAND (1): Keflavik

    HOLLAND (2): Schipol (Amsterdam), Teuge

    BELGIUM (1): Brussels

    GERMANY (1): Frankfurt

FRANCE (2): Charles de Gaulle (Paris), Nice

SPAIN (3): Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, Lanzarote (Africa?)

    MADEIRA (1): Funchal (Africa?)

    CYPRUS (2): Larnaca, Paphos

    ITALY (3): Rome, Trieste, Venice

    HUNGARY (1): Budapest

    CZECH (1): Prague

    AUSTRIA (2): Innsbruck, Salzburg

    MALTA (1)

GREECE (3): Hania (Crete), Skiathos, Thessaloniki

RUSSIA (2): Domodedovo (Moscow), St. Petersburg

    TURKEY (1): Havalimani (Istanbul)

    Africa (4)

    TUNISIA (1): Sousse

    EGYPT (3): Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada

    Asia (12)

    UZBEKISTAN (3): Samarkand, Urgench, Tashkent

CHINA (5): Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Yichang, Chongqing

    VIETNAM (3): Hanoi, Danang, Saigon

    SINGAPORE (1)

    North America (15)

GREENLAND (3): Kangerlussuak, Thule AFB, Station North

USA (10): JFK, Dallas/Ft. Worth, O'Hare (Chicago), San Francisco Intl., Phoenix, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, Denver, Atlanta

    CANADA (1): Calgary

    CUBA (1): Havannah

    South America (12)

    COLUMBIA (1): Bogota

PERU (5): Lima, Nazca, Arequipa, Juliacca, Cuzco

ARGENTINA (2): Ezeiza (Buenos Aires), Jorge Newbury (Buenos Aires)

CHILE (4): Santiago, Calama, Puerto Monnt, Punta Arenas

That should come to around 112. To be added later are Amman and Aqaba in Jordan.

Station North at 81 degrees N in Greenland is definitely among my favourites. Everything is white, then suddenly you see a rectangular marking in the snow down there. Turns out it's the landing strip. Sometimes the C-130 Hercules lands with ski mounted.

Skiathhos (Greece) is also very exciting, not the landing, but the departure: Due to length of RW, the aircraft carries a limited amount of fuel. After take off, they have to land somewhere else to fill up (Thessalonikki).

UK & IE: Dublin, Shannon, Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick, East Midlands, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen

EU: Paris CDG, Nice, Lyon, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Malaga, Lisbon

North America: Houston Hobby, Houston Intercontinental, Boston, JFK, Newark, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Seattle, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver

Others: Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Ysterplaat (mil.), Waterkloof (mil.), Newcastle, Witbank (private), Dubai, Bangalore (old).

Bangalore was by far the worst airport I've experienced. I think the new airport was already under construction or well in to planning, so the old airport was being allowed to run down. On arrival, the luggage conveyors were faulty, so they had someone whose job was to move all the cases around a corner where they would get jammed. On departure, after getting through more checks than I'd had on entry, the gate announcement system was down, but there were only two working gates anyway. People just wandered in the general direction of my the Air India flight to Dubai, about two hours after it was supposed to leave. I managed to board and find my seat, then someone else came along with a boarding pass for the same seat: they'd managed to overbook the flight. The flight attendant took one look at my face and left me alone, and helped the other guy.

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

    Belfast International

    Belfast City

    Dublin

    Paris

    Manchester

    Liverpool

    Birmingham

    Leeds Bradford

East Midlands (I was going to an outdoor concert but unfortunately I didn't have the window seat so I couldn't see the festival crowd from the air)

    Luton

London City (very nice EastEnders style view from the window here)

    Stansted

    Gatwick

Belfast International is a comfortable enough airport with good parking and it's not too big.

Gatwick was the largest I've been to, it must have taken half an hour just to get to the front door.

Luton was good too although you have to take a coach into London but it gives you a good look at the NW London towns.

I have added the below since I last posted. Vantaa and Haneda airports were lovely airports to pass through, Vantaa in particular. It was completely stress free and a nice place to spend a few hours in. I re-visited O'Hare airport in Chicago as well. I had forgot how awful the place is. The place was boiling hot and finding the L train was not as seamless as it should have been.

    Austria:

    Vienna Airport

    Azerbaijan:

Heydar Aliyev International Airport – Baku

    Finland:

    Rovaniemi Airport

    Vantaa Airport - Helsinki

    France:

    Marseille – Provence Airport

    Georgia

Shota Rustaveli International Airport – Tbilisi

    Japan

    Haneda Airport – Tokyo

    Norway:

    Oslo Airport

    Tromso Airport

    Serbia:

    Nikola Tesla Airport - Belgrade

    Turkey

    Istanbul Airport

    UK:

    Leeds - Bradford Airport

    Newcastle Airport

    Birmingham Airport

    USA:

    LAX

I hate flying so not many, Belfast Aldergrove-Heathrow- Kingstown-Orlando, Heathrow and Orlando were just jumping onto a proper jet and a stop over for picking up from Kingstown. Return leg can't remember. Edinburgh-Belfast city I think and the return the same. And thats it, never flying again or leaving Ireland.

Best experience: Always in DXB (Dubai airport) (of course, everything there is just mega clean/efficient at all times)

Worst experience: Dusseldorf and Cologne last summer ( within 1 week of eachother)

4 hour queues to even get into the airport and thousands of people waiting in line for security, everyone angry and fighting with eachother because everyone was going to be late etc. not sure what sort of **** up that was, will hesitate to ever fly in or out of a German airport ever again

also the Spanish airports can be quite smooth/easy to navigate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭thomil

@dartboardio That was a major f***-up, not just at Cologne and Düsseldorf, but also at many other German airports. The management at many airports had forecast a much slower recovery of passenger numbers and between that and the fact that very few people were willing to work, say, security at pre-pandemic pay & conditions left many airports massively understaffed. It wasn't just Germany either, I remember Amsterdam having similar issues when I flew through there last year. From my recent experience at Frankfurt Airport though, things are vastly improved this year.

As for mine, here goes nothing:

    • Bristol
    • Budapest
    • Cologne
    • Cork
    • Dubai
    • Dublin
    • Düsseldorf
    • Frankfurt (FRA, HHN)
    • Hamburg
    • Helsinki
    • Izmir
    • Kerry
    • Klagenfurt
    • London (LHR, LCY, STN)
    • Munich
    • New York - JFK
    • Palma de Mallorca
    • Prague
    • Providence
    • Warsaw
    • Vienna
    • Zurich

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Might have missed one or two. Also been on the ramp/in the hangers of plenty of others without flying in or out. I don't miss my old job.

    Best: Zurich

    Worst: Luton

Have to agree German security is the worst, even pre-Covid.
