Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

the next few days, while there will be showers in places, it will be dryer than it has been recently. From Friday onwards we are back to much more unsettled conditions with rain and sleet becoming more of an issue again.

Tomorrow needs it's own thread, anyone?
Heavy snow showers right across the country Tuesday afternoon though whether it sticks is another thing....

I think you lost an 'm' in your username?

So more sporadic sleety sneachta hail and rain for tomorrow.
Watching the lampposts tonight I suppose, fire on inside and the flakes swirling around like ghosts in the light... Sparks rising and pure delight...

Thankyou for the smiles; much needed...

No lampposts out here except at the pier. And all the buoy lights and lighthouse lights . But at the house? Pitchy black so just when I open the door to check and the flakes or drops hit me as I fight to stop the gale taking the door off...

Such a wind; small wonder the snow does not stick. ;)

Trying its best to snow in Letterkenny again but just amounting to horrible wet sleety stuff.

Sun and showers have made short work of last night's snow, still about 3cm in the garden but only a patchy covering on concrete, roofs etc now

this is the general nature of cold zonal, snow can settle at night if it's cold enough but during the day the snow will always melt as daytime temperatures in cold zonal even at the best of times usually hover a few degrees above freezing, add the sun to this and how late it is in the winter, it's never going to stick around for long.

We need a proper easterly with sub zero temperatures by day and night for snow to stick and stay throughout the day. Even with a direct hit easterly thawing becomes a problem in March. A daytime temperature of 1C in March with some sunny spells is enough to bring along a constant dripping sound outside.

I have given up on seeing snow settle during the day for a while now, but hopefully there will be a decent night time covering at some stage this week. Tuesday night could be the best opportunity for that.

Euro4 has overdone these accumulated snow predictions near the coasts recently so not saying its gospel, however by 6pm tomorrow it shows this, inland and higher elevations should do well as usual.

That Euro4 should be banned for snow charts! Unfortunately will probably be another sloppy mess save for very high ground.

Looking at satellite animation and there appears to some sort of front or more organized area or cloud and I would imagine associated precipitation about to arrive on the West coast. Could be just cloud but in any case there's a good area of convective showers to follow. https://en.sat24.com/en/gb/infraPolair

Going by this winter. That's nature about to de-ice us before the snow arrives :)

could be some sleet and snow showers across the country tonight. A few of the charts have them making it to the east as well, but I wonder how much of them will survive the journey intact.

Dew Points heading in the right direction.
    pointrosee_uk.png

Temperatures still a bit high, hopefully if the showers make it here later the temperatures will have fallen by a few more degrees.

Quite a breeze out there and it dont feel cold at all.

Neither did last night but as I walked to the Jack's in my sleep the ground outside was glowing white. Why wasn't it Saturday and I could have built a snowman with a pint of Guinness in his hand.

Even at the home of the black stuff they dream of a white one.

First trough line (or enhancement of precipitation) approaching the west coast. Won't be sleet or snow to lower levels in coastal counties there yet but as Gonzo said showers turning increasingly wintry overnight with falls of snow toward morning particularly inland.

Sure is Sleety_Rain . Good forecast below from Convective weather, will stick it in here as very much part of the cold wintry day tomorrow. Showers galore with hail hopping off the ground, looks like we could get sparks inland as well as along Atlantic coasts.

    L6HMFu1.png

    Day 2 Convective Outlook
    VALID 06:00 UTC Tue 25 Feb 2020 - 05:59 UTC Wed 26 Feb 2020

    ISSUED 22:08 UTC Mon 24 Feb 2020

    ISSUED BY: Dan

Broad upper troughing covers the British Isles on Tuesday, sharpening and sliding southeastwards during Tuesday night. The associated cold pool overspreading relatively warm SSTs (and diurnal heating inland!) will generate a few hundred J/kg CAPE in an environment with very steep mid-level lapse rates. Numerous showers are expected throughout this forecast period, primarily focussed over western areas initially but developing more widely as the upper trough slides southeastwards with time. Several shortwaves will also provide the focus for more enhanced activity as they drift southeastwards in the mean flow.

One such feature will be close to western Ireland first thing on Tuesday morning, drifting towards Wales / SW England by midday and then across southern England / Midlands during the remainder of the afternoon and evening. This will be strongly forced in an environment with strong shear, helping organisation of cells and it is quite like sporadic lightning and hail will occur with this activity. Ahead of this, a strip of vorticity coupled with diurnal heating may allow a separate line/zone of showers to develop and drift across the Midlands / southern England / East Anglia / SE England during the first half of the afternoon, and this could also produce some sporadic lightning.

Another shortwave will enhance shower activity towards NW Ireland on Tuesday evening, eventually approaching western Scotland during the early hours of Wednesday. Away from these more organised features, random scattered showers will still occur capable of producing a few isolated lightning strikes - particularly over NW England. Strong, gusty winds will be possible with the most intense showers - particularly in southern and western Ireland towards SW England, and it is in these areas that an isolated tornado may also be possible. Eastern Scotland and NE England will see very few showers, and could stay largely dry.

Here's the source of the 250-m air that arrives at Mace Head tomorrow evening. It will have set out from Baffin Bay 72 hours previously, with a more northerly and hence shorter sea track than previous similar outbreaks.

Most should see snow showers as the coldest 700-500 hPa air gets in tomorrow afternoon and evening, with a many white cars by Wednesday morning. This level warms considerably during Wednesday afternoon, so shower activity will be dampened by then.

tomorrow looks very showery indeed, in places prolonged showers.

showers already in the east by early morning.

showery all afternoon and into the evening:

showers making it to the east even tomorrow night:

Hirlam wants to bring a spell of sleet and snow across the south and south-west tomorrow evening.

    hirlamuk-1-26-0.png?24-22

Bitterly cold tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will struggle to get to 5C.
    21-580UK.GIF?24-18

    Uppers of -7 to -8C
    27-7UK.GIF?24-18

fairly raw wind chill tomorrow which gets more noticeable as the day and evening goes on.

    21-290UK.GIF?24-18

Quite windy at times with gusts between 60 and 90km/h
    27-289UK.GIF?24-18

Tomorrow has the potential to be the most wintry day of the year so far. I don't think there will be much in the way of lying snow away from high ground until after dark. Could be temporary dusting in places during the daytime.

We got a minute or two of snow here in central Mayo during the middle of that shower but it turned to sleety rain again. Real borderline stuff for the second night in a row. Was surprised to see it. Looks promising for tomorrow eve with a bit of luck. Better take myself away from this back door before a second night of sleep is ruined!

And from tomorrow morning the sun will quickly melt anything that does fall. We had probably 6-7cm here early this morning yet by 2pm you could see the grass again. Still lying snow anywhere that was in shade all day but anywhere that got even an hour's sun is long gone.

Tomorrow night probably the best chance for any worthwhile lying snow but even then the usual Atlantic caveats apply!

Been watching this frontal zone approaching the south/southeast over the last few runs and there is a chance of more prolonged spell of snow overnight Wednesday but it depends on how far north the occlusion is thrown.

Met Éireann mention that too but have it as rain/sleet and skimming the south coast. Their text forecast seems to have snow mostly over high ground it seems.

As we were told.. " Wait and see"!

Rain here. Bitterly cold. Y;day there were still three small snow patches atop a far mountain but no doubt they will be washed away.

    SO COLD!
