Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Agree with other posters regarding the snow risk which is elevated through much of the week particularly midweek. Not just overnight tonight to watch.

Hopefully we get some pics from the sweet spots.

Maybe should change the thread title?

"Week of 24th Feb --> snowfall risk"

    :)

AROME high def going for widespread wintry precipitation and snow across a good chunk of Leinster for a while.

Will I be able to get out of my house in North Kerry with all this snow in the Midlands?

    :D

    I'm sorry, I just had to ask :;
I'll probably see it in the Reeks anyway. The last lot hasn't melted yet.

Ah easy for thee! Just get a tea tray and away you go down the mountain! Out here we will have to swim for it!

Shame about the timing just, don't think I'd be fit for much tomorrow if I was up till after 3am.

Plenty snow on the hills here this morning though snow line quite high, I'd guess around 500m

I'm guessing that this high definition chart takes topography into account as the hills in my immediate vicinity show up as little pink dots of snow, West of Kilcock. The hills are in the 130 - 150m range in height.

I met an elderly neighbour out walking on the road earlier. He pointed to the top of Nephin and said "the old people used to say that the snow up there is waiting for more snow at this time of the year".
One way or the other, I hope that a bit of lampost watching (or back door light in my case) might be on the cards later tonight.

We have a better chance of lying snow on Tuesday, front coming in from the north west due point around 0c and freezing levels down about 100m.

Arpege shows less snow than yesterdays runs with rain mostly for Meath, Dublin and Kildare, snow in the midlands, north-west and Ulster.

    arpegeuk-1-22-0.png?23-11

GFS has toned down even further from yesterday with a very brief moment of snow over the midlands with snow mostly across NI and perhaps Donegal.

    21-574UK.GIF?23-6

Hirlam moves the snowrisk north from yesterdays runs as well, keeping it to the north midlands, NI and the north-west. Rain along eastern counties too.

    hirlamuk-1-20-0.png?23-10

Icon takes in more of the midlands for some temporary snow, rain along eastern counties away from high ground.

    iconeu_uk1-1-16-0.png?23-12

A definite downgrade all around for tonights snow in eastern and more southern areas and central areas.

Still looks game on for Ulster, NI and maybe parts of the north midlands and very north of Leinster. Rain and flooding will be more of an issue for most parts tonight. Lying snow for any length of time is probably more restricted to high ground and parts of NI.

If I can stay awake, I’ll report from North Leitrim.

I’ve probably jinxed our chances of snow by typing that!

Status Yellow - Rainfall warning for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary

    UPDATE:
A spell of rain tonight into Monday morning will lead to accumulations of between 20 to 25mm, with higher totals possible in upland areas.

The rain is likely to be preceded by a period of sleet and snow in parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster, with hazardous driving conditions for a time, before turning to rain later.

As the ground is saturated at the moment and river levels are elevated the combined effect of rainfall and snow melt may lead to some localised surface and river flooding.

    Valid: 20:00 Sunday 23/02/2020 to 08:00 Monday 24/02/2020

    Issued: 13:57 Sunday 23/02/2020

  • Registered Users Posts: 430 ✭✭Donegal Ken

    Met office uk warning

An area of rain moving into Northern Ireland during Sunday night turns to sleet and snow during the early hours of Monday before turning back to rain again from the south during the course of the morning. The bulk of accumulations will be above 100 to 200 metres with a chance that above 200 metres some places may see 5 to 10 cm snow. At lower levels, snow cover will be patchier with small temporary accumulations and slushy deposits. During the afternoon, strong winds may then lead to some drifting of lying snow over hills and mountains.

    G'night! Happy snowday!

PS gale warning that applies also to coastal waters ie coasts

Is the snow starting off as rain as it's about 7c at present and will probably be 4c by the time it arrives.

coastal areas of the west and eastern counties likely to be rain all the way. For parts of the north midlands and north-west probably starting off as light rain, then a period of sleet or wet snow then a quick transition to rain again.

Inland areas of NI and high ground probably snow much of the time, but even in those areas the mild will break through, melting most of what falls away from high ground.

Drizzle in Letterkenny on and off, was up around 300-400m a while ago and also raining. Lying snow level around 550m so can't say I'm overly optimistic for anything more than slush tonight but we'll see what happens

Recent rain south of Limerick City. Stopped now.

Surface water remains on roads. Nothing serious.... just big puddles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,174 ✭✭✭pauldry

Seems much less of a risk of snow over most of connaught now with Ulster saying yes only

    Rain is winning out.

Given its distance from all 3 radars, the precip in east Mayo will be more at upper levels and may have evaporated before reaching the ground.

Snow warning for Knock: 3-5 cm up to 5 am.

Raining here on the hills in Kilkenny but temperature is falling with it, 4.1C now, won't snow here but the temperature is falling.
It is a steady fall, from 5.6C a couple of hours ago.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,959 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I don't see any snow falling here in Meath tonight, much too mild. At a wild guess Monaghan to Castlebar and northwards may get some temporary snow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,900 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Yes it's promising for further north. Must remember though it will only be temporary.

  • Registered Users Posts: 430 ✭✭Donegal Ken

Radar is giving false reading showing rain over parts of Connacht which where there is no rain falling at all. Main bulk of the rainfall is coming in from the west now and it will be around and after midnight before we see any precipitation possibly turning to sleet and snow.

a real pity yesterday evenings Hirlam didn't play out, would have been an interesting night of snow watch with several hours of heavy snow across a far larger area! Hopefully better luck from Tuesday onwards!
