Trailer looks good, and an interesting setting with a Branch Davidian type end times cultists.

    From PS Blog
Far Cry 5 – What Awaits You in Hope County, Montana
Ubisoft takes the wraps off the newest entry in their wildly popular open-world series.

You’re stranded behind enemy lines in cult-occupied Hope County, Montana, and nobody’s coming to help you. Eden’s Gate, a veritable army of fanatics, has finally made its move and locked down the area, leaving you and every Hope County resident in cult territory. Now you’re standing alone against deadly odds in Big Sky Country, with no bars on your phone and only one way to stop the madness: take down Joseph Seed, the self-styled prophet of Eden’s Gate, and free Hope County from his campaign to save souls by force. And if you’re going to survive long enough to do that, you’re going to need to make some friends. Welcome to Far Cry 5, coming February 27 to PlayStation 4.

To hear Executive Producer and Creative Director Dan Hay tell it, Far Cry 5 is equal parts isolation and community, adventure and resistance. It’s a game that’s as much about finding common cause with like-minded people on a dangerous frontier as it is about exploration and explosions.
“You go out into the world and you meet people for the first time, you don’t know them, maybe they don’t trust you,” says Hay. “But if you can strike a deal with them, if you can have a conversation with them and make them part of what it is you’re building, they can join your resistance.
“It’s definitely about chaos, and there’s a lot of that in this,” says Hay. “But it’s also about building a beautiful world, and that’s a thing we want to introduce you to. We went to Montana, and we fell in love with it. It’s stunning.”

Hay and his team spent around 14 days in Montana during development, meeting locals and seeing firsthand what the state has to offer. They found beautiful countryside with diverse biomes and wildlife, all of which create tons of opportunities for outdoor activity. They also found people who impressed the developers with their sense of self-reliance.
“We met a lot of people who didn’t want to be messed with,” says Hay. “They want to be left alone. And there was this feeling of being able to take care of themselves. And it created this sense of a frontier, and a remoteness, that really resonated with us. But what happens when somebody else shows up and says, ‘yeah, I agree with you, don’t trust the government, we can do it ourselves, and I will provide’?” All of a sudden you create this petri dish, this magnet for crazy, which is where Eden’s Gate goes.”

At the top of Eden’s Gate sits The Father, Joseph Seed, who believes that societal collapse is imminent, and that a voice has commanded him to save as many souls as possible before that happens, whether they like it or not. While meeting with cult experts, however, the developers discovered that cults aren’t generally kept together by a single, charismatic leader, but by a hierarchy of people working together to accomplish specific goals.
In Eden’s Gate’s case, those people are Jacob, a 20-year Army veteran in charge of security; John, a lawyer who acts as the cult’s public face while aggressively buying up property for it; and Faith, who keeps the cult’s members pacified and “rowing in the same direction,” according to Hay.

“We look back at some of the characters that we’ve created before, and we’ve had those key moments where you sit down with them, and you look at them eye to eye,” says Hay. “But we kind of did it with one character at a time, and each game was a face-off. This time, we thought it’d be really interesting if we created a cast of characters [like that]. They each have their own personalities, and each even have their own agenda.”

It won’t just be the antagonists that get that kind of attention, either. Remember those friends we mentioned at the beginning? Potential allies are all over Far Cry 5’s Montana, and if you can convince them to stand up against the cult, you’ll be able to recruit them to follow you into battle. And unlike the interchangeable rebels of Far Cry 3 and 4, these Guns for Hire are unique characters with special skills, unique backstories, and distinct personalities.

Our first look at three of these characters in Far Cry 5 included Pastor Jerome Jeffries, a former parish priest who was driven out of his church, beaten, and left for dead by Eden’s Gate – and who now takes up arms to defend those the cult wants to oppress. We also met Mary May Fairgrave, a second-generation saloon owner who’s lost her family business to the cult’s predatory real-estate schemes, and Nick Rye, a cropduster pilot who’s ready to start raining down bullets to defend his family.

“When we see those characters come to life, when we see that they’re not just AI waiting around to give you a mission, they have real personalities, they have opinions about stuff – the world feels real,” says Hay. All of these elements – the world, the cult, the resistance you build – work together to create a world that feels believable while still giving you free rein to wreak havoc across an open countryside with a huge array of weaponry and armed vehicles. It’s a balancing act, but one that Far Cry is uniquely suited to pull off.

“The nice thing about games maturing is, we’re getting closer and closer to films and television in terms of the stories we can tell,” says Hay. “And I think it means we can start to tackle situations and characters that are a little more complex. It’s still ours – it’s our Montana, it’s our county, it’s our cult – but it means that we’ve grown up enough to be able to tackle that. Even though it’s a tough subject, it works in the game, and we feel like we can own it.”

Far Cry 5 launches February 27 for PlayStation 4, and you’ll be able to see a lot more of it on June 12, when Ubisoft’s E3 press conference kicks off at 1:00pm Pacific Time.

Pity it's so far away; bummer after RDR2 being delayed. Hope TLOU2 is a 2017 release at least.

Looks okay, from the little we've seen so far. Wish they'd just stuck with Christian nut-jobs instead of creating some cult. Truth is stranger, and sometimes more sinister, than fiction.

Far Cry 2 is still the most fun. Lost interest in this series after 3. Gave my Uplay account away to a friend after buying 3 for 5 quid. No regrets, boring game.
2's checkpoints and malaria were a drag but the setting, atmosphere and even the gunplay, strategy and survival aspect was at its best. Loved the fully in-game map. Wish more games did things like that. Was also before the UBISOFT FORMAT got plugged into the series permanently. Picked up a while back on gog for backup. Originally played on PS3... the sixaxis motion control driving was actually really good.

The only thing sinister is how vocal people are on cesspools like neogaf about how it's a shame that the antagonists are mixed-race cultists instead of all-white Christians.

Just thinking about it, this game is gonna cause an uproar. You read tonight about 8 people shot dead in Mississippi.
Not sure if it's religious linked or just old us weirdos.

But either way, you're gonna have these mass killings and vigilantes in a game where some cult / religious sect has taken over and forcing people to abide by their laws.... right slap in the middle of good ol US of A.

I can see the media ..not games media, but BBC and FOX gettin hold of this and running ridiculous stories etc.

I'm predicting a LOT of negative and bad press about this game.
It's gonna turn our kids into terrorists !! - said one user on Facebook (I feckin HATE when news sources...the likes of BBC quote random people on the internet. The lowest form of journalism)

Lots of strange goings on in the real world involving cults. The likes of Jim Jones springs to mind.

Never said otherwise. Besides, the People's Temple was a Christian cult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Fair enough. Just as above, some people seem utterly disappointed that they don't get to shoot up some Christian fundies.

Ah, I see. Well, for the record, I'm not one of those "utterly disappointed" at all, let alone because of who the bad guys are.

Could have been a great WTF moment in Red State too but alas, we were denied.

Pity the antagonists look so young too, Michael Parks would have been a great voice for one of them. :o

Yeah was thinking the exact same thing. Could have really elevated a decent horror to something more memorabel.

Us Gamers have had to endure a lot of crap over the last few years. The targeted harassment by the mainstream press through Gamergate, the terrible launch and outright lies of highly anticpated video games, the outright censorship of art through “localization” policies, the continued rejection of romantic partners when they find out our hobby, the appropriation of our culture by so-called “gamers” on twitter. NO MORE!

Must be fake, right!? Either way it's fecking hilarious! :pac:

There’s no reason a protectonist nationalist movement would all be one race
Their brutal physical and sexual violence towards their oppressors will then be explained as a reaction to harsh government policies and taxation, to show that both sides are wrong.
Change the setting to Canada for America.
We Americans have so few games to call our own, and we’re tired of losing them to multi-cultural bull****.

Gotta hand it to them, from a quick glance it almost seems real and the type of gibberish such people would spew, but it's genius :D

I love how they talk about bull**** censorship and they demand censorship of Far cry 5.

Honestly I imagine that Ubisoft want controversy more than anyone for the free publicity.
It's not even that controversial to me if it wasn't set in the US it'd get zero discussion.
I kinda hope that they do more to change up the formula of the series. The overall gameplay has been the same in 2 to 4 bar having Malaria & bad checkpoints in 2. The upgrade system, towers & crazy antagonist is likely going to feel familiar. I can see myself escaping his speech at the start of the game already. Maybe in co-op they will have a friend break you out???
I'd love if the game added a nemesis system or BOTW climbing but that may be a few years away from being industry standard.
I'm always going to wish they went the wild west route tho.

3 and 4 are pretty much the same game and Primal looked like more of the same. They are fun, but it gets old after a while. I would happily recommend getting Far Cry 3 and giving it a go.

Yeah I 'd second Far Cry 3 if only for the flamethrower and the marijuana fields song. Certainly preferred it to 4.

That'd be the mission "Kicking the Hornets Nest" and the song is Bun Dem by Damien Bob Marley.

Plus, once you've cleared Far Cry 3, you get to play the stupendously amazing Blood Dragon, which makes me sad that they haven't brought out similar titles since. Like how awesome would it have been to be Rex travelling through time and showing up in Primal!?

Loved 3 and 4 although 3 was my favourite on originality terms. 100% completed both which shows how much I loved them.

Skipped Primal and really looking forward to this.

On the music front, albeit brief, I did like the riff from The Clash at the start of 4, gave it a very nice start.

Really liked Pagan Min and loved Vaas and wasn't sold on Citra or Hoyt but they generally have great antagonists. They can do so much with Joseph Seed so I'm looking forward to seeing that.

if its anything like previous ubisoft titles, its all just reskinned sh1te from the game itself. nothing that'll give you any tangible advantage anyway.

I had a great time playing FC3. FC4 is a beautiful looking game, but I thought it was let down by boring and forgettable characters.

Sorry but I still prefer FC2 over FC3; at least it's story made a bit of sense beyond "I'm now a stoned up serial killer murdering my friends"; could not be bothered after FC3 with anything more. They are all copy and past of FC2 with new skin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I'll probably pick this up, as I loved 2 and 3, Blood Dragon was amazing, and then 4 and Primal felt too much of the same. Nothing new. Hopefully this will solve that problem.

I'm also thinking Ubisoft is testing the waters with the DLC. One with Zombies, one with Aliens and one set in a classic war. I reckon whichever one of these is the most popular will be the setting for a future game, not necessarily in the Far Cry series.

If anybody is interested, Smyth’s have the gold edition which includes the season pass for €69.99. Gold edition is €89.99 on psn so definitely a bargain.

EDIT: didn't see Eoin's post about FC3 included with season pass.

FC3 was absolutely great fun. 4 bored me and only made it half way through.

Smyths also have 5 euro off when you buy online and collect instore so the gold edition is only 65 that way which is a bit mad.

I've played all the farcry games besides primal so I'll probably pick this up although I'll wait for a price drop.

I really enjoyed them all but it's fair to say that the first one is a little bit dated looking these days. The second made some brave decisions but I didn't like how baddies respawned or how they could see you through long grass when you couldn't see them.

The third one was excellent - there's a thread here from a few years ago where reactions are pretty much universally positive. I enjoyed 4 as well but it was basically FC3 in a different environment with less interesting characters. If they don't mess too much with the formula (open world, towers, baddie bases, vehicles, wildlife, weapon variety etc), the fifth should be pretty good too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

The Smyths price is great value, its £59 on Amazon currently for the Gold edition, factoring in the delivery charge and time, you'll end up paying closer to €70, if not more from Amazon.

Tempted to tell herself cancel the pre-order on Amazon, although I dont have much time to play it with work at the moment. :o
