Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Boyles??

I'd prefer not to say but it would be good for the road if it happens.
Brighten up the place a bit as all the buildings along there are run down looking

I heard in the past that it was Boyles, in fact I posted it in here at time iirc.
That doesnt mean I was correct though, but it does make sense as that land backs on to their existing yard.

    Tralee a city??!!

Surely a nonsense idea? I can't picture ever calling The Mall the city centre! I know there's the argument that similar sized town Kilkenny is officially a city but that's based on some ancient charter rather than it realistically being recognised as a typical living breathing city. I think there would be more piss taking of the town than anything else if Tralee were to suddenly be labelled a city.

Kilkenny is only, by convention, referred to as a city for historic reasons. It has absolutely no legal designation as a city. It did have a borough council when Tralee only had a town council but Drogheda, Wexford, Sligo and Clonmel also had borough councils but have never (except for by some deluded folk in Sligo's case) been referred to as cities.

This persuit of city status is pure nonsense.

Lady that was killed in the accident outside Rathkeale was from Tralee. Knew her to talk to, always smiling, such a lovely person. Condolences to her husband & children.

The Rose of Tralee festival is to receive €30,000 funding from Failte Ireland! Other Kerry festivals are also to receive funding.

Not sure, the most likely as I said may be Roundy's, or maybe The Blasket. Never seen it in any bars here though.

Had never heard of it before this, but looking up the logo on google images I definitely recognise it from the offies and I'd swear one or two pubs around town.

Agreed. I have been guilty of falling for the media perception of them in the past but they came across as such sincere and decent men in that interview that I think maybe Kerry is not doing too bad having them represent the county.

To be honest if it runs on wireless technology like kerry broadband then they won't be able to off you a much better product. Also the more customers they get, the worse the speeds will be because you can't do much with contention issues on wireless.

The Allegro in Castle street is closed for refurbishment at the moment and is due to open with a new name, Gaudinos Restaurant. I think its the same owners, just having a revamp.

I've eaten there - it's very good. Wanted to have lunch there yesterday and saw the notice about the refurbishment,

Anyone know what the story is with the Italian cafe that was on Edward st. I had heard that he was moving to the unit that used to be Reubens on Ashe St. but that looks like a constituency office for John Brassil at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭kerryked

Walked past there last week and noticed it was closed (think it was called Giovanni's?) - had never been in there, was it nice? To be honest, I thought it was more of a shop seeking products than a cafe, didn't realise.

Couldn't imagine it getting much business up that far in town though, especially being such a "niche" shop.
Probably would have a better chance down on Ashe St , haven't heard anything about it opening anywhere else though.

No more Allegro??!! End of an era!! Although my memories are more from when it was where Costa is now! Think I only ever ate in the newer Castle St restaurant once! I wonder is the Allegro in Killarney still there.

I knew he was closing on Edward St but he had said before Christmas he was reopening on Ashe st. It's a pity if he doesn't, the food was good in there.

I find it hard to understand why it would be a wise move to change a name with a history in Tralee like 'The Allegro' and start from scratch with a new name.

The allegro (on castle St) used to be called the Stella (and before that the Wimpy). The old joke was " how do you know the festival is on in Tralee? A. There are customers in the Stella!.

Tralee International Marathon taking place today...there'll be road closures around the town for a bit, mostly Caherslee/Ardfert direction. Good Luck to all 800 runners

Went to the Tralee parkrun for the first time yesterday morning. Must say it is very well run (no pun intended!). Had never really been around the town park properly before so was great to get to see it, huge crowd there too. Well done to everyone who volunteers there, fantastic atmosphere around there yesterday.

Unfortunately I'm working most Saturdays until the summer but I do hope to get down to it more often once the summer comes around.

A member of my family went for the first time yesterday too! She didn't run, but she really enjoyed it all. They get a good crowd to it. Great to see so many kids at it too!

    http://www.independent.ie/regionals/kerryman/news/family-flees-raging-gorse-blaze-27405593.html

From the kerry Man March 2011

Tralee Fire Brigade Station Officer Nigel Corner appealed to landowners not to light gorse fires, which are illegal in the period between March 1 and August 31.
"We've been very lucky so far but I have to emphasise that nobody should be lighting fires like this at the moment. It's far too dangerous," said Mr Corner.
The current dry spell also means that fires are spreading for quicker than usual. "The fire service is literally praying for rain at the moment," said Mr Corner.
In addition to the risk to human life these gorse fires a placing a huge financial burden on the county. Last year the emergency service bill for dealing with gorse fires was almost €500,000. A SHOCKING rise in the number of unconfined gorse fires in Kerry last year resulted in the taxpayer forking out almost half a million euros in emergency service bills, a figure that is expected to rise yet further in 2011 as illegal fires rage across the county this week.
In December The Kerryman also reported how over €100,000 of damage was also sustained by Coillte when gorse fires destroyed over 22 hectares of forest in one year.
All gorse fires lit between March 1 and August 31 are illegal and while most are aimed at clearing overgrown shrubs in upland areas, allegations of blatant vandalism have added a much more sinister element to the equation.

Not a bad parade today! It seemed to be a lot longer than previous years. Didn't seem to be too many floats though, but all in all it seemed good! Great to have a dry day for it :) Happy St. Patrick's day to you all :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭Pink Fairy

Parade went off well, unfortunately the same old problem of marauding teens with cans of shaving foam, and paint destroying themselves and anyone that comes in their path.
No adult supervision once the parade is over, they march the kids thru town and then abandon them to their own devices.... Stupidity.

Tralee Chamber Alliance put up a post this evening with a photo of the mess left from people in the square today. Everyone complaining about the lack of control there again this year!
