Getting a used green one for 400 might be a problem, i havent looked that deep but from chrono24 and ebay their isnt much for less than 600. And its only number 3 or 4 on my most wanted list so it would need to be a serious bargain:D

While I was in the US there was a few around 450 dollars.. I sold mine for 450 euro.. it was in mint condition.. don't regret selling it but I would like a seiko around that size and price with a black dial so we'll see what new one looks like

Never even occured to me it could be JDM only, its just a wait and see i guess.
Came across this version also, referred to as a "Red Alpinist" because of red wording on dial, beautiful watch.

I'm considering doing a little Lume restoration and am looking for a steer from anyone here who does their own?
1st off, none of the watches are old or even valuable ;)
    Nor radioactive.

I'm looking for advice on a good value Lume powder/binder?
Along with a steer on the steps, I'm assuming remove old lume? Then apply new stuff slowly in thin layers?
How best to remove old stuff? Q-tip and water? Or is a solvent of some kind needed?

    Are these https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F251911242063 any good?
    Or best avoided?

Watchmaker completely dissembles a Rolex Submariner. Then you see a speed up single shot of him putting it all back together. Very satisfying.

Being shortsighted, particularly in my left eye I generally don't even need a loupe. Though in fairness all I'm OKish at is taking them apart, getting them back together and working, now that's the trick. :D Particularly if the main gears are all under one plate. And all I've fiddled with have been time only handwinders and early quartz which are handily very modular(though I'm paranoid about static killing them).

If you want to try S the basic tools aren't so expensive and get an old and cheap pocketwatch to practice on. Though after getting OK with a pocketwatch movement, the first time I tackled a wristwatch was a whole other ballgame. Many many years ago the watchmaker my dad brought his watches to, would let me and the Da watch him work(mostly so him and the Da could talk about fishing :D) and I remember him saying that wherever he trained they would get the students to work on women's watch movements to text their skills. Movements that would be the size of a cent piece or even smaller.

Mad though how once your eye is in on those scales, working on something like a phone or laptop is barely worth a thought. You can fly around. So even if all you do is take apart a big pocket watch and through trial and error get it running halfway decently, I reckon it's a handy skill for your mind and hands. I knew a couple of watchmakers way back who were headhunted by Intel IIRC.

Actually medical types and particularly surgeons tend to be into watches and quite the few I've known IRL and on forums also have a go at watchmaking. Hmmmm.... "But doctor, the artery is only 3mm across, we can't suture that?".... "Hold my beer". :D

Really taken by the look of the Nomos club sport neomatik, anyone seen it on sale or secondhand for a reasonable price? Or recommend any alternatives that look similar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,932 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I've been looking for some alternative straps for my U2 and while the H-Link is lovely.
Tis a bit beyond my poor pocket at the moment.
In my search I came across this pu12.1.6-Silcone-Rubber-Strap-in-Black-w-Red-Stitching.jpg
It was delivered this morning and the strap itself is lovely, really supple rubber.
The clasp is a bit on the "tin" side.
If only there wasn't a taper, my Sinn buckle would already be on it.
Great value too at $16.99 including delivery from www.strapsco.com

If you go for a similar watch you'll never really be happy. Wait for a used one, put a wanted post on some of the fora and save up in the meantime. Usually a few get offered for sale when something new is launched from Nomos as ppl trade up to the new one, register on the Nomos site for news. Is it the black dial you are interested in?

FYI - alpinist (017) on TZ UK for 325 GBP, which is a shade under 350 euros. Looks to be in good condition. Bargain considering what they are going for now and will go for in the new release.

Was up late the other night struggling with pain relief.
When in one of those happy quirkes of fate, I saw a lovely programme on BBC4.
Nicholas Parsons, enthusing and investigating Breguet's Marie Antoinette watch.
Lovely documentary, and Parson's love of clocks, clockwork and Breguet's innovative solutions and designs really shine through.
Its on again on the 6/10 at 9p.m and is well worth a watch ;)

I'll get me own coat :P

Bloody fantastic documentary B and Nicholas Parsons is a brilliant host and guide and a true blue timepiece enthusiast/complete dingbat as well. And he's 93 FFS. I quote: "My passion for clocks started in the 1930's". If I had half his energy nigh on half a century behind him... :)

    It really is fantastic!
Even leaving aside the technical brilliance of the watches...
The story of the theft of the collection and its recent return could make a movie in and of itself!

Watched it myself last night great documentary. Had recorded it earlier this year but never got around to watching it and like yourself just happened to catch it yesterday. The watch really is an amazing piece of watchmaking history. Didn't know much about Parsons either he's quite an interesting character.

Rather than clutter up the thread where Thirdfox gave me a steer on some Bund Homages ;)

I thought I'd give what I learned a share here.
HKED is releasing a v3 in early 2020.

Looks quite good in my poorly educated opinion.
    I may be ordering this when/if it's released ;)

Also a panda and a blue dialled version planned.

He has done a couple of WUS forum st19 based versions already that seem to have been quite well received.
HKED and Raymond Wong were new to me too until TF mentioned them on another thread.

What kind of money is that watch? Think I'd sooner go for a more established brand, it looks pretty cheap.

That's just a render of the next model.
Its run thru 2 versions already that were both fairly well received by the users over on WUS.
Its a sub $300 watch, the HKED V1 and V2 can be seen over on WUS and below is are a few V2 pics.
Its a Chinese made homage, that I hope will scratch an itch for me, and perhaps convince me one way or the other if a gen bund is what I really, really want ;)

    That's entirely the point ;)

The watches are built on an St19, are handwind like the original and now they are using sapphire crystal are much more interesting.

Bund is a grail for me, but I'm after spending a little too much on watches this year to afford 1 for the next 5yrs :pac:
And whilst I love the idea of owning one, I'd hate to buy and find that I don't like hand wind, or it doesn't wear well on me.
This is a cheap way to find out.

That HKED bund is very accurate, in render anyway, it would be interesting to see it in the metal.

They're a large watch B(43mm IIRC), but wear smaller and I've got scrawny wrists where 35-36mm would usually be my sweet spot. For normal sized humans they'd be bang on I reckon. They've a fair old reserve on a single wind. 48 hours kinda thing. And they don't have a date so less faffing about there. To be fair I like the ritual of handwinding and don't have any automatics among my mechanicals. For me the biggest issue with the Bunds are the overly "restored" examples that make up a lot of the market, that and too much variability with the red (3H) dials. I'd look for a civilian one, small T, no red (3H).

I have joined the wait list for the likely November release of the V3 so will share pics as and when I get hands on 1.
The 43mm would actually be my sweet spot.
Most of my bits are in the 39-42mm range and quite chunky.

The V2 looks quite good and a sterile 3H dial could be quite nice, I got copies of the blue and the panda render that I'll share later.
The black is my preference but nice to see variety and options are nice.

The Citizen Eco-Drive ltd edition StarWars watches have some nice touches.
The Death Star and Vader models in particular are quite eye catching.

Can't find anywhere selling them to Ireland and they seem to be an Amazon exclusive.

After the HKED suggestion you're going to really hate me know - you know that An Post offer the US delivery service right? You can get amazon to ship the item to a US address and An Post then ship it to you (you'll definitely be paying VAT+duties of course).

It's called AddressPal - I've used it for exotic camera lenses in the past and they've been good.

...perhaps I shouldn't be emptying your watch buying account :pac: but just can't resist "helping" people spend on watches :D

    I know about addresspal, but!
I love the gamble on "hoping" it will get thru customs :P
Rather than factoring in the additional charges straight away.

To be honest at $400 I can totally justify the purchase in my own mind...
At $400 + 23% VAT, plus any Tariff, with the Address Pal charge on top...
Its not so easy to justify ;)

Huh - do companies care about stolen goods? I never did contact Omega etc to report my watch stolen with serial numbers etc. I didn't know they'd take an interest in that (and of course then there's issues of proof of ownership etc.)

Would have thought that watch companies would wash their hands of these things and provide a service to any watch that comes through their doors. If I'm mistaken though please let me know and I'll drop Omega a line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Ok - good to know - so no need to do anything extra - the insurance company already got the details. Interesting to know that Omega/Rolex etc. will have contact with the insurance companies too.

I somehow forgot to throw a watch on this morning and feel weirdly naked.

The fact I also forgot to wear trousers might be something to do with it.

But seriously, feels weird without a watch, must be first time in years.

One of the nice things we do in my workplace is run a blind auction every year, donating all of the raised funds to charity. Normally it's used IT gear, like laptops, Chromecasts and the like, but this year I've decided to donate some unworn/unloved pieces, so will be offering up these 4, rather than selling them on Adverts:

Did the same thing the other day, felt something was off with me, then I realized, no watch.

Although the tan line is so prominent I could draw on a dial and no one would notice.
